So let’s see, so far for in the running of which KI character should be the poster character of KI we have (as the most suggested characters) Fulgore a murder bot with an iconic face and no gender might I add, Orchid a spy whose appearance has gone from a sex icon to to an actual spy who is female, and Spinal a skeleton with literally no meat in between to say otherwise. hmm tough choice there pick wisely or you might be a sexist.

Orchids a butter face I say let her continue being the T&A of ki.
I mean, my girlfriend is the most anti-Orchid person I know. She hates the character with a passion. Feels she’s too generic and that she’s mostly there for T&A. I don’t think we can pin that on sexism, especially seeing since she mains Hisako.
I’m fine with Orchid as a character (I’ve used her modern iteration as an example of why KI’s character design is much better than most other fighting games) but I feel there are other characters that are infinitely more interesting. Especially the other awesome female characters in the game like Mira, Hisako or Riptor.
Of course, I’ve never been much of a fan of spy movies, and I’m pretty lukewarm on military themed characters, so that’s probably mostly due to personal taste.

It really stands that orchids CGI model was simply the flashiest of the group and the hair graphics and reflective skins were prominently displayed with her model as the cabinet’s main side graphic
This isn’t about wanting to have stronger female representance in games. This is about you being wrong about something and misinforming people.

When I think of KI “symbols” I mainly think of Fulgore, Spinal, Orchid, Jago and to a lesser extent, Sabrewulf. In the older games, Orchid had a larger role in the plot, both being revealed as Jago’s sister as well as defeating Eyedol (as you all know).
I’ve always considered her to be the main female protagonist because of this, with Jago being the lead male protagonist. I think there’s some weight in that as well. I’ve always enjoyed her, from her move set and her tonfas, to her profile background, stages and music.
So going from that, to where she’s at now in this game, plot wise at least (still love her stage and music), would seem to me like a bit of a step down. Sure, not every character’s going to keep climbing the proverbial ladder, but it does feel like she’s been left out in the cold a little bit, plotwise.
Spinal has a whole background with Kan Ra, Aganos, and the mask and Jago has his stuff with Shadow Jago, Omen and Gargos and Fulgore has stuff with Thunder, Eagle, and is all over the place plotwise, Orchid doesn’t seem to have a whole lot going on, and I’d like to see MS / IG work on that a bit.
So on that part, I agree with Larry’s sentiment. I’d like to see her do a bit more; to have more of a presence in what’s happening, either with multiple subplots with multiple characters ala Hisako or a rivalry ala Maya and Mira, or a main through line in the plot. I’d love for her to get a sort of direct rival Ultratech agent to battle with at least, or perhaps in the future stories, her and ARIA are greater foes and there’s a bigger narrative focus around that.
As for her looks, I honest to god don’t care. I don’t care if she was T&A back in the 90’s when all marketing ad wizards thought that only teenage boys play video games. I also don’t care why Larry likes her or wants her to be more prominent in KI as a story or as a symbol. I’d like to see Orchid (and Sabrewulf for that matter) get more involved in what’s going on, and this comes from a Sadira main, if that matters.
As for the sexism charge, I see a little casual sexism here, but the vast majority of posts mainly seem to be in favor of Fulgore being the face of the franchise and that’s about it. I don’t think that has anything to do with Orchid being female, but that’s just a guess.
I think you’re overreaching there, Larry, and unless you have a bit more to back up that claim with than a few dudes referring to her breasts, you might want to consider toning it down on the rhetoric.
That’s kinda how I always saw it as well.

Huh. I thought it was about him wanting KI2 Orchid’s bubble butt to make a comeback and him trying every conceivable angle and cover-up to find an approach where everyone will agree and rally behind him so that he will then get what he wants.

But I was focusing on the whole “Orchid is the face of KI” part… which is wrong, though she is indeed a very strong presence of the games. Especially the first two.

Well storywise, yes she had more of a presence…probably more due to the lack of roster than anything.
She held the same prominent role in Season 1, and season 2 also spent a lot of time focusing on her through other characters, but it was always more of a “ok she’s had her time and served her purpose, but we need to focus on the new and shiny as well”
Aside from that, her story has her concerned with a single point, but now that the story has evolved away from flushing out Ultratech the focus has been more on establishing these new guys/girls. Yes they could have given her back the Gargos killer story, but giving it to Kim, another female mind you, helped establish her better, especially with the “no time traveling save for Tusk who did it the hard way” design they went with.
All in all more focus will be put back on her when she gets her ultimate, but in the mean time I say keep the genederless kill bot the mascot.
Why do we still continue to give LCD the time of day. He brings nothing but negativity towards the game and its devs. He constantly spews out outlandish comments and remarks.
During his stream last night he reiterated that he has no intention of purchasing Kilgore or even continuing to support the game any further until he gets something in return. EVEN THOUGH it wasn’t that long ago he posted a thread asking for larger top 8 payouts, but he won’t support a character that adds to prize pots.
LCD think he’s playing up to a character of being the KI villain but he’s just coming across as an ungrateful and spoilt kid.

I get that from a basic “this is the spy character, this is the ghost character, this is the dinosaur character” etc why the spy character would sound the most vanilla, but do you think there’s anything else beyond that as to why she’s not as exciting as other characters?
Personally, and I don’t know if this is DH or IG or MS, but it doesn’t seem like a whole lot of emphasis has been placed on her story and advancing it. Do you think that would help, or are there ways you’d make her a more exciting character from a moveset perspective? Or is it just a taste thing and she’ll always be “fine” but not as interesting as others?

I agree that her story is concerned with flushing out Ultratech. She’s a spy, and she’s trying to lure out the infamous corporate machine and expose it. I will say that she did that a bit during season 2 and I liked how that was handled.
But now that the plot has moved on beyond Ultratech and with evil incorporated actually joining the heroes, Orchid never really seemed to get repositioned toward the greater enemy or even still focused on her original enemy. She didn’t get much of anything, at least from what I’ve seen. I think that’s the unfortunate part.
I don’t think that they needed to go with her killing Gargos, but still, they didn’t give her anything to replace that with, so it’d be nice if they could do more in this regard.
As for her ultimate, I think that’ll get people to pay attention to her a little, assuming she gets one, but I don’t know that it’d do anything to change her role in the story or her importance to the new version of KI, which I’d still say, from a story perspective, is rather limited.
The whole mascot thing… I agree that she’s not THE mascot and never has been. But I do think she’s been up near the top before. The elite “group,” if such a group exists. I’d like to see her back in that sphere of importance again for all the reasons I mentioned before. I think she’s a good character and I think she could be even better.
