Tekken 7

Honestly, Saheen feels like a character you could save for DLC. Kazuya is a must have.

Let’s say that with added dlc content, each franchise gets 5 more characters. Who would you slot in there?

Assuming we switch Kazuya to main roster and Shaheen to DLC, I’d say:

From VF:

Aoi Umenokoji
Taka-Arashi
Brad Burns
Jean Kujo
Dural

From DOA

Gen Fu
Kokoro
Mila
Rig
Diego

From Tekken

Shaheen
Steve Fox
Julia Chang
Byan Fury
Ling Xiaoyu

Man, so many choices in Tekken! I hate leaving out Miguel Caballero Rojo, Sergei Dragunov, Craig Marduk, Feng Wei, Bob Richards, Claudio Serafino, Josie Rizal and Lars Alexandersson among others, but if I’m just picking 5, that’s probably who I’d go with. Trying to find a balance between unique styles, how popular they are and how core to the series they are.

Oh, I’m completely of the mind that criticism can be warranted for both. My point is simply that the messenger being the DOA devs doesn’t somehow make criticism of the Tekken devs invalid. Both things can be true at the same time, and both of them can come in for legit criticism.

As an aside, Dead or Alive 6 is the first game I actually regret purchasing. The controls are just so simplified that it becomes un fun.

DOA6’s whole design philosophy I think kind of necessitates fighting against another human. The stagger/strike/hold system is incredibly deep and fun, but it doesn’t lend itself to fighting AI opponents super well I don’t think. Half the fun of the game is that feeling that you’re in someone’s head and just owning their entire existence, but that’s not something that can ever really translate to fighting a CPU opponent.

The depth/complexity of the series is in that two-way interaction - remove or reduce that and you’ve taken out the most interesting component of the game.

Forgive me if I fail to see the fun in a game with only two attack buttons.

No offense, but you’re acting like little to no gameplay can be applied to only 2 buttons, keep in mind directional inputs and attacks that use both buttons can basically triple the amount of options you have with those 2 attack buttons. Next you’ll say Virtua Fighter is garbage for doing the same thing decades ago, or Soul Calibur because it only uses 3 buttons instead of 4-6 like most games.

On a side note, why didn’t you just wait for the free version of DoA6 like most people did? I did that with DoA5 to see if I would care for that game (which sadly I didn’t), and only spent $5 to buy the Attack on Titan before they had to delist it for an expiring license (which makes you wonder why they even made the stage in the first place, if they couldn’t keep it).

IDK. I guess I figured if I was gonna play it then I wanted all the characters and the story mode.

Back to Tekken. How many characters are left to be revealed? And what are the odds we’re finally gonna get Kazama Kiriyu.

We won’t find out anything until December 6-8 if I recall (the arena stage says when the actual date when the TWT finals will happen). Also as I’ve said elsewhere in the planet, I do agree it’s time for Kiryu to get in, if only because they got sidelined in favor of Noctis. Negan doesn’t count in this case since Harada apparently wanted a villain for the 4th Guest Character slot, and Kiryu isn’t a villain.

At the same time, I’m not expecting the fourth and final character to be revealed yet. They’ll probably show off Leroy’s trailer and tease the third character, and that’s it until next year. So with that said, I’m predicting either Ganryu or a remade version of Bruce with a new moveset (Josie has most of his old moves).

Are there more characters in S3 beyond number 3? Or would we have to wait for Kiryu in a third season (which I’m not confident we’re getting).

The DOA6 system is based around the height and timing of attacks and the environmental modifiers to your combos (walls, ground hazards, slopes/drops, etc), not the amount of buttons available to be pressed. It’s also got a lot of command normals, so a pretty decent sized movelist all things considered. You seem to be looking for forms of depth the game pretty explicitly isn’t trying to be about :man_shrugging:t5:

How do you think Kiriyu would play? The only real exposure to Yakuza that I have is the Completionist’s video on Yakuza 0.

I have literally never played or seen the Yakuza games, all I know is that Sega made it as a spiritual successor to Shenmue in terms of gameplay. But from what I remember both Shenmue and Yakuza have combat inspired by Virtua Fighter, just made more over-the-top in the Yakuza series, so I guess he would just be an over-the-top version of a VF character.

I’m sure someone here has actually played the Yakuza games before, so they’ll be more useful if they want to talk.

@STORM179 you may appreciate this vid

Guessing you’ve moved on from this part of the conversation, but have you played the Virtua Fighter series? I’d argue that the characters movelists are even deeper than that of Tekken’s and it only has two attack buttons.

I’m not saying this to argue or disprove your belief or anything like that. I’m more saying it because it’s a great series with awesome gameplay / character designs, tons of depth etc and it might change your mind about the two button attack system.

That said, there’s no story mode in any game that I can recall, but I believe they kind of created the rank up system that Tekken uses for its treasure battle mode and that was really the thing I gravitated to back when I played a lot.

I played the crap out of that mode in Virtua Fighter 4 and I want to say that it came back in VF5 as well, but I can’t recall for certain. Either way, it’s one of my favorite fighting series and I’m assuming VF5: Final Showdown, which came out on 360 is likely relatively cheap on XB1. Okay, just checked… According to an old Eurogamer article it came out on XB1 with a pricetag of $14.99.

Who knows, maybe it’s even cheaper now? Either way, definitely a game worth checking out. Some characters are harder than others (maybe skip Akira entirely, as the timing on some of his stuff is downright brutal lol). But they have a lot of great archetypes and fun moves and what not. For my money, Shun Di is the best drunken kung fu character in any fighting game. For me, it was always fun to just grind against the computer AI and go up in rank. Never really played 2 player.

I’ve never gotten the chance to play Virtua Fighter. But 5 is on my hit list for disposable income. Not super excited to hear about it only having two attack buttons, but I’ll give it a shot at least.

Yeah definitely check it out. If you like Tekken, I think you might like Virtua Fighter as well.
