The longer they go without mentioning that the main antagonist is Shang Tsung specifically, the more I think he’s not the main villain in story mode. I think it’s someone else we haven’t seen yet. Call it a hunch. Call it whatever you want. But I think Liu Kang is gathering everyone to fight someone else. Cause they’re being hella vague in the trailers about why he’s gathering these champions together and there would be no reason to be so vague if it was someone they already revealed. Maybe it is Onaga like some have claimed.
Honestly. I think one of the reasons I like this Ashrah is that it’s a redesign that could have worked in the old timeline. She’s not completely different just got the sake of being completely different. They just took what made her compelling and amped it up to 11. And that’s all I want from MK at this point. I don’t need everyone completely reinvented for the sake of it and the more we get characters who are kind of like the old timeline but also completely different… it’s just not the series I fell in love with anymore and it’s hard to get invested in. Like… the character they revealed today is, by all accounts, Reptile but they don’t even call him Reptile in the dialogue. He has some weird lore name and at that point with how different he is.. it’s just not the same character. He’s only superficially similar. Same with Raiden. He was originally the god of Thunder, hence why he was named after the actual Japanese god of Thunder. Now he’s just some kid with electric powers who I guess is just named after the god because both he and Liu Kang can’t be gods together I guess. It’s not even like it’s the new 52 because that was more or less a reversion to the status quo for most characters with minor changes in backstory. It was the secondary characters they played around with the most. This is just… too different.
I hope I’m not wrong about them eventually reverting back to their iconic trilogy states and I hope I don’t have to wait too long for it to happen. Because the new era just does not do it for me.
Well yeah I did notice that Reptile is not the last of his kind but was cast out because he could take on a human form.
My concern was that they were gonna make him born human but became reptilian which I’m glade they did not do that.
Did anything get altered that has not been there before? only one I can think of.
It looks like his alignment is good and not evil.
But other than that, Reptile is a saurian that disguises himself like he did in the original the three games. But I already pointed how they could’ve done more for both of his designs.
Though if I had give another, it would be lean up his body some.
I don’t think he’s the main villain. I could see a scenario where he’s somewhat of a protagonist even. Maybe he somehow figures out that Liu Kang created this new timeline and that this isn’t how things are supposed to be, or something along those lines. Maybe he finds out that there’s a timeline where Shang Tsung defeated Liu Kang with the aid of Kronika’s crown. Who knows.
But yeah, the fact that they haven’t even hinted at who the final boss might be suggests that it’s either Liu Kang himself, who seems to be a bit strict on the peace component of his new era, or it’s a fun surprise from the past like Onaga or it’s someone new. I suppose it could be General Shao, but I don’t think they’ll go down that road.
Oh you know they’ll bring it back as an alternate look for her. Only question is whether they’ll make it a classic look or if she’ll get some modern version of it as an alt outfit. I would be stunned if she didn’t get some version of this hat though.
Syzoth was revealed to be his name in MKX, I think. Personally, I like what they’ve done with him. We’ll have to wait and see, but I think he’s a better version of the previous character, tbh. That character went from being a lackey in every game to just being kind of a good guy lackey for Kotal in MKX? Like that was his best story moment. He decided to be a good guy.
Same goes for Baraka, Smoke, Li Mei, Tanya, etc. None of them have had exceedingly noteworthy roles in MK stories. Smoke got changed into a robot in the original timeline and then… He didn’t in the new one. That’s basically it, except for his weird lore ending in MK9. Tanya being with Mileena was basically the most exciting thing that’s ever happened to her beyond being a bad guy in the older games.
As honestly worried as I am that I won’t like or want all of the retconning they’re doing with this new story… As much as I wish they’d just made these characters more interesting in their original timeline without having to do reboot after reboot… I think at least some characters will be better and more interesting for it, even if they’re not exactly what we once knew them to be.
I’ll personally take MK1’s version of Baraka over any prior version, even MK11’s which was by far my favorite version of him.
It’ll be interesting to see how this all plays out. I know I’m going to have some kneejerk moments of “ugh that’s not the way that character’s supposed to be, but I guess that’s what they are now…” but we’ll have to wait and see.
Onaga would be an interesting character to revisit. I kind of thought that Havik was the main antagonist? In the earlier games, he was a cleric of chaos, sowing discord like the Joker just for the sake of chaos itself.
It was.
Same here. I like that they’re focusing a little more on his character and that he’s not just a lackey this time. I mean, granted, Reptile has always been a lackey going all the way back to MK original, but still, he has such potential as a character, especially in terms of his story. It’s interesting that he’s no longer the last Zaterran and that he’s become something of a pariah due to the fact that he can assume human form, although that kind of makes me wonder, aren’t other Zaterrans also able to take on human forms like him? I could have sworn that I spotted Khameleon in an earlier trailer, and I think it had been confirmed that she was a female Zaterran. I also wonder if Chameleon (the male version) will also appear.
If it does end up being Onaga, I just really hope they find a way to make him playable like they did with Shinnok and Shao Kahn.
Back when MKX was still popular, and with KI still getting support through season 3 at the time, to me Onaga could’ve been NRS’s answer to Gargos from the recent KI.
I.E, a tall menacing dragon boss character, but still being balanced just enough that he wouldn’t be RIDDICULOUSLY overpowered like in the PS2 era. Least for the version players get to use, anyways. Make the boss version the one that has crazy ■■■■.
Id be very disappointed if he was only resorted as non playable like Kronika or Corrupted Shinnok.
Part of me is really dreading what kinda requirements they’ll have just to unlock basic costumes. I was NOT a fan of how MK11 did it via towers of time, plus the forced Online DRM locking offline players from getting anything worth while.
Considering how hush hush they’ve been about it, makes me very concerned.
I kind of hope we don’t miss out on non-kameo Jax, Sonya, and Kano. They’re kind of… integral.
Also, I gotta say. I’m kind of mad they basically threw away the whole Liu Kang/Kitana thing. Cause like… he’s a god now and she’s not and she’s also not the Kitana he fell in love with. Anyone who wanted to see them get kids to go with all the other Kombat Kids, even if they were Zombie Kids or Time God kids, just won’t get that anymore.
Because Liu Kang isn’t even the god of time anymore! He abdicated that to Geras of all people! Geras, the ripoff Tremor with time powers who was the definition of a mook and barely had an interesting design compared to who he worked for. This could have been a great opportunity to give us a playable Kronika since she’d be a completely different person who had her destiny re-sculpted. But nope. Geras. Woo.
Honestly I thought the new era would have TWO Liu Kangs and TWO Kitanas. One set who filled their normal rolls and one set who were holdovers from the old world keeping the hourglass and staying in the shadows. But nope. There can only be one of each person. Because reasons.
You can give me character after character I’ve been asking for for years. But bottom line is they aren’t the characters I’ve been asking for. They kind of are, but they mostly aren’t because of the reboot. And so many of the established fan favorites are almost unrecognizable in a really unappealing way that just turns me off.
I can only say it so many times before I just sound like an annoying broken record to anyone who isn’t bothered by all this and I’m sorry If I am. But I don’t understand how anyone who has become attached to these characters over the years, some for even longer than I’ve been alive, can be ok with all this.
I can think of tonnes of way to change the PLOT that doesn’t change who the characters are. Because who they are, how they interact and what their personalities and backstories are like, is the appeal of a fighting game character at the end of the day. And MK1 basically strips that away entirely for everybody for… reasons. Street Fighter understands this (mostly, some characters in 6 are iffy), Tekken understands this, Guilty Gear understands this, King of Fighters understands this, SMASH understands this. Every fighting game understands this. If I didn’t know better I’d think the series was given to a new team who didn’t like the old games very much.
It just really bothers me that so many people LIKE this new direction so the odds of us returning back to their original backstories and identities, even with a new narrative, are slim to none.
I would actually be happier if there was a huge internet complainers backlash to this reboot because it would mean the devs would almost assuredly do a complete 180 next time.
Yeah, the whole Kitana/Liu Kang romance wasn’t something I was into myself. I don’t even think it was done all that convincingly either.
Why would Liu Kang want to rebuild Kronika of all people? Geras, I can kind of get since he’s essentially a golem, but a powerhouse like Kronika? Hell no! Now, it might be possible that she might turn up in some form or another - who knows - but it’s highly unlikely that Liu Kang would do so, let alone allow her son Shinnok to be created.
It would be interesting to see characters from the old era act as antagonists to Liu Kang’s “new” era. That would be interesting to see…provided that it’s done well.
Characters change all the time - it’s nothing new. Whether it’s Elseworld retellings or New 52 reboots, it’s not a question of what’s changed, but what’s preserved. One also has to consider the context; in this case, we’re talking about a new reality that’s been restarted by Liu Kang in order to right the wrongs from the previous era. I don’t doubt that there are fans who probably have some issues with MK1, but by the same token, though, it’s hard to judge the changes without seeing the actual result. I like what’s being done with Baraka and Reptile, but by the same token, though, it is always possible that Netherrealm might drop the ball with their stories somehow, be it due to too many cooks in the kitchen, crunch time, etc. That said, though, let’s give them a chance. If it’s good, if not great, awesome! If it’s crap, tear it a new one.
I mean, had MK11 originally commited to MKX’s cliffhanger, i.e Dark Raiden vs Emperor Lui Kang, with Earthrealm trying to combat the two factions, we theoretically could’ve still kept the old timeline in tact. Maybe even giving the four Kombat Kids a better chance to shine, because by then they’d all become formidable warriors beyond their appearance in MKX.
Instead, they copped out the last minute by introducing Kronika out of nowhere, and shoehorning time travel which only complicated things way too quickly.
Thus, here we are.
As for the new timeline itself, we’ll just have to wait and see how it’ll play out.
He’s crafting new destinies for people. The people we’ve seen aren’t the same people with the same stories. Why would Kronika or Shinnok be any different.
So if he has to pick SOMEONE to rule the hourglass he might as well reboot the one with the cooler design and just drain out all her evil juice or whatever when crafting her new destiny.
What’s weird to me is that Sonya was a part of the OG cast which I heard most of them were always safe to appear in future games. But there’s still a few slots left.
I’m sure at least two of those well go to Sonya and Jax.
I have to agree, NRS really blew their chance to make Dark Raiden even more special than he was during the Midway Era. I can only hope that MK1 Raiden will have awesome moments.
Except that these are really, REALLY powerful and dangerous beings - in this case, a Titan and an evil Elder God, both of whom had brought no shortage of pain and suffering. Given the fact that there isn’t any suggestion whatsoever that Liu Kang brought back Shao Kahn, it’s fair to say he wouldn’t bring back either Kronika nor Shinnok. Maybe Cetrion, but then again, does Liu Kang have the power to create gods?
Yeah, I wasn’t crazy about their copping with Dark Raiden vs Emperor Liu Kang, either. Part of me had been hoping to see that. On the other hand, though, to a certain extent, we did see a resolution of sorts to that. Maybe not with Dark Raiden, but in terms of Raiden and Liu Kang’s redemption with
the latter becoming a god
.
