Mortal Kombat 11

Angry Joe interview

The mechanic team said they wanted the moves to feel represent by button commands. So if the move is a low meter burn then you would press down and B for a meter burn slide or something like that. I dont like that idea as there was some of that in Injustice and its hard to pull off sometimes.

I think the green souls thing is more Shang Tsung’s deal than Ermac’s though either is certainly possible. Still, if I were a gambling man, I’d say Shang Tsung, Noob and Smoke all seem more likely now. Same goes for Kano, Rain and Kitana who are on other menu tiles. Thanks for the video, man! Hadn’t seen that yet.

If that’s true, then I wonder if it applies to the menu tiles as well, as we’ve already seen Noob, Kitana and Kano, a dude that definitely looks like Smoke and green souls that certainly seem like a nod to Shang Tsung.

Interesting…

I dunno, the fact that it was a darkened version of The Warrior Shrine stage from MK1 leads me to believe it’s more than a little possible that we’ll have a remastered MK1 playable in game. Who knows, maybe they even put some more bells and whistles in it like making Reptile, Goro and Shang Tsung playable, giving you currency for playing it, etc. I believe Ermac was rumored in MK1 so maybe they even put him in. Same goes for Jax.

It certainly wouldn’t surprise me if they all wound up being playable. Given that Kronika talks to Shinnok’s severed head and tells him that this wasn’t supposed to be his fate, it seems less out of the realm of possibility that she could rewind time and bring him back.

As for Reptile, if he’s not on the main roster, I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if he’s DLC. He’s a fan favorite, and my guess is that they want characters that will sell as DLC. I don’t think we’ll see a bunch of obscure characters along the lines of Bo Rai Cho or Tanya as DLC this time around. Maybe one. But for the most part, I could easily see them using characters like Ermac, Reptile, etc to entice people to buy the DLC packs. Just a theory, but still.

So I guess we can safely assume no tag mode. :frowning:

So where are we at character wise?

Confirmed: Raiden, Sub Zero, Scorpion, Shao Khan, Skarlet, Geras, Sonya and Baraka (8)

Soft Confirmed: Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Kabal, Cassie Cage, Kitana, Johnny Cage, Kronika (could be unplayable boss) (7)

Rumored based off menu cards: Kano, Rain, Noob, Smoke, Shang Tsung (5)

Rumored based off of in game items: Shinnok, Cyrax, Reptile (3)

I’ll just throw out another idea here… MK has been pretty good in the past about using past cameos in the next game. Reptile and Shang Tsung were playable in MK2, Noob, Jade and Smoke were playable in UMK3, Liu Kang was playable in MKD, Shinnok was playable in MKX.

Obviously, this isn’t ironclad logic, however, of the main cameos in MKX, two of them (Baraka and Kabal) are already in MK11 and one of them is rumored (Smoke).

That leaves Sindel, Fujin, Sareena and Li Mei left. (4)

Given that 25 spots are on the select screen and we don’t know if Shao Khan takes up one of those yet, we’re left with, at the most, 26 spots. I could see them having one more new character, perhaps two. So while the full number here adds up to 26, I’m doubting all of these make it in anyways. Plus, Jade’s been heavily rumored as well.

Either way, I could see a large percentage of those unconfirmed characters ending up in the game either on the main roster or as DLC. It’s going to be interesting! Wonder if they’ll show more than one character during the kombat kast on 1/30.

i think it would be really nice to customize the skins and the colours of every piece. At least to be able to choose the colours of the skin. And it wouldn’t be dificult for them to make a mode for that. Instead of that just two or three pre-made variations. And the explanation is they do not want to make the characters look funny… but i think when you are promoting the variation word, you shoudn’t stay back to what has to do with colour. It could be an easy win. The accessories do not make the character look that different, but the colours do.

Something like this perhaps. I’m on mobile so apologies if the video isn’t linked properly.

Fair enough. I just think it will take some time and people will get used to the idea. It seems they have some reasoning behind it, like if its a launcher the input is up+2/up+3 whereas for added damage without launch, its mashing a button. I dunno, its just too early to tell IMO.

I think those are very likely, except for the Smoke and Shang Tsung ones. The Smoke one seems too plain and suits the idea of a staple base ninja that can be customized. The green souls I think is just a nod to a stage, like the Shang Tsung’s Palace stage from Deadly Alliance.

Sounds like an interesting idea, but I wonder exactly how much more replayable it would be as compared to an adventure mode.

I see where your getting at. Although the footage I saw with MK 11 showed the use of Cyrax’s net and reptile’s acid ball. I guess they weren’t ready to reveal them yet.

Cyrax is a bit iffy still, all the cyborgs actually. Reptile though is probably soft-confirmed since the Spanish voice actor put out that tweet about not being called back to reprise Kung Lao and Reptile.

True, but hopefully that implies that he’s playable. I just felt concerned was all.

I just thought of something. That one interview said there would be unlockable characters well what if that’s why the portrait screen is so light. They don’t show up till you unlock or download them. We’ve got the 25 ones we see plus Shao Kahn. Then 4 Secret unlocks led and 2 six character passes (12) for dlc.

Hm. I could see that. I thought they meant “secret” characters in the vein of “surprises”, but MK has had a few truly hidden characters over the years.

I’m not sure about that. Whenever MK has had unlockable characters, the slots for them were always present. They could be blocked or greyed out, but they were still there and not hidden. Unless they decide to make a sudden change for this one, I don’t think it’ll be any different in MK11.

The only game I can think of where they’ve had hidden unlockable characters is MK vs DC.

The characters could be hidden in the skins, Modifiers and gear.

They could probably put the exclusive guest characters in there. Like say Garas could easily be Kratos.

MK doesn’t, and shouldn’t, really do that either. That’s more of an Injustice thing since characters don’t have established movesets in that game unlike most characters in MK.

I’d certainly like that. I wish they interviewer had pressed Paulo on that (I believe that’s who was being interviewed). I’d love to know if he meant story cameos, hidden fights or characters not on the select screen that could be unlocked. “Secret characters” can mean a lot of things. Reptile was a secret character in MK1 and wasn’t playable, but Ermac, Mileena and original Sub Zero were secret characters in UMK3 and they were playable.

I’m assuming Paulo wasn’t referring to story cameos though. Even though they’re somewhat unexpected, I could’ve sworn that I read or saw something somewhere that they’re not going to have story cameos in this game, likely due to the backlash they received by having a bunch of characters in the story that weren’t on the roster, since people more or less expected them to be playable, especially the ones that could be fought like Baraka, Rain and Sindel.

Either way, it’ll be interesting to see how they handle that. I’ve always loved MK for its hidden characters, but I’m starting to think that the winds are shifting on that in terms of player expectation. I think for a lot of people, if they see a character and can fight them in the game, they want to be able to play as them and almost feel cheated somehow if they can’t. Very different from the earlier MKs, even if it made demand to play as those characters in the next game go through the roof.

While there was a darkened outline for Quan Chi in MK9, Cyber Sub Zero didn’t show up on the select screen at all, if I’m not mistaken.

Also, and I know this is going back a ways, but in MK4, both Noob Saibot and Goro were hidden playable characters that were never on the select screen. Well, Noob Saibot was in the earlier arcade versions, but they removed him.

You had to select hidden and then move to the right character tile (Reiko for Noob and Shinnok for Goro) and press block and run.

So there is precedent. It’s not much, but it’s still theoretically possible. Still, it seems odd that Paulo would just announce hidden characters like that, but oh well. “Secret characters” seems… Kinda vague. Makes me want to know more!

He’s in the DLC slot. It’s a bit misleading but I’d still count that as a “blocked out” space. Kratos was in there too.

Idk I definitely see this being done with the jobbers and background characters.

As well as some console exclusive characters (as they’re not used in tournament anyway.)

Ummm. I get where you’re coming from. But that’s kind of ignorant of the source materials. Just because every single punch doesn’t have a name that the character shouts out doesn’t mean they couldn’t have taken it from the source material.

they need to give us a legit secret character. no reveals, no streams discussing moves or special attacks or tools, nada zip nothing. total secret character that is reminiscent of the old days where everyone was like WHO IS NOOB SAIBOT?? and the rumor mill was always twisting and turning at whether such a secretive fighter even existed in the game, despite your buddies at lunch time swearing they seen evidence that he is in the game. that’d be so cool, but thats just me

While that would be interesting, in the internet age it’s almost impossible. Unless they were super complicated to unlock the secret would be out 4 hours after launch. I’d just like the small bit of progression unlocking new fighters entails.
