yep wishful thinking. mortal kombat always takes me back down memory lane after so many years. i been playin this ■■■■■■ game since i was like…10. close to 30 years of MK, time flies when you’re havin fun.
Someone help me, was kratos exclusive to the ps version of mk or was he available to other platforms/ consoles
Yes.
That’s not what I mean. I’m talking about having already existing characters with original movesets and throwing those movesets away in favor of turning them into skins.
Let’s say, for example, they take Kai and make him a skin for Liu Kang. Liu Kang, who taught Kai, would most likely teach him the moves that he does so it would make sense for Kai to seem like a bit of a clone. Except Kai already has his own moveset from MK4 and Armageddon which would disappear as a result of being a skin. They could make Variation moves to resolve this issue, kinda like Nightwing and Robin, but in terms of a base moveset, the differences will be gone when they should still exist. Kai is not Liu Kang just like how Robin is not Nightwing, and a simple skin shouldn’t be an easy solution.
A background grunt is one thing (although I don’t know why you would want to play as one of those), but a console guest character from another game is another. You really think Kratos is gonna teleport around in sand teleporting and using time powers like Geras? Even after Kratos not only does his own stuff in his series, but was also in MK already with his own moveset?
The point is, you can’t just take an established character and turn them into a skin for the sake of “including” them. It’s not like Injustice where the Premium Skins don’t have movesets and it’d be ok to make them a skin of someone similar (the Flashes). This would only work for newer characters or other characters that are close enough already for it to work like Frost and Sub Zero (but I think there are issues with those two also).
Not talking about just skins the alternate moves are also a thing. As of background characters: Naginata monk ftw!
Yeah I didnt like how you could fight against SIndel, Baraka and Rain but could never use them…same with Corrupted Shinok. People to this still still ask how to unlock those characters. They never believe that you cant unless you use a PC mod which still really isnt selecting them, its there skin and move set modded over another selectable character or something crazy.
Like how hard is it to make a character playable if they are in the game as normal characters that you fight against?
So many people thought for sure they woudl end up DLC since Tanya was in fact that same scenario. I really hope they learned there lesson on doing that. Now if SIndel and Rain DO NOT make MK11 its a huge slap in the face to those fans as they were basically teased with the new versions of the character only never able to play them…and now they expect them in 11 and possibly not get to play them again.
That slap in the face would also happen for the Reptile fans if he turns out to be unplayable. Which I hope does not happen. I want him to be playable.
I mean, they weren’t really fleshed out in the gameplay department. Most of what they do is almost directly ripped from MK9. While I wish they were playable, its more than just flipping a switch and making them playable. More work would have needed to go into them, and they decided they weren’t priority. I think they could be cool if brought back now though.
The phrase “slapped in the face” tends to annoy me when used in the context of games and fans. There are very, very few instances where I think it applies, and very rarely do any of those instances involve fighting games. The developer makes the game they think is cool and that they think people want to play, and they aren’t obligated to put anyone in there that doesn’t fit their vision for the game. No one said Baraka was going to be playable and it wasn’t like they showed a stream with Sindel talking about her cool variations and how awesome it was going to be for players to get their hands on her. I thought it was cool that they had little story nods to characters that NRS didn’t ultimately add to the game. I can understand fans being disappointed that a given character doesn’t make it in, but aside from blatant misinformation or misdirection, a dev’s character decision isn’t a “slap in the face”.
For reference, the closest thing I can think about in FG’s that matches that is the way SC5 just merced a bunch of staple female characters to replace them with younger and hotter versions of themselves that played 93% the same. And that was more just ■■■■■■ decision-making, for which they were (rightly) pilloried. The one instance I can think of in gaming in general that legitimately deserves the phrase was the original ending to Mass Effect 3. That one ■■■■■■ me off
I totally understand…but the average person out there complaining about it doesnt. Thats who would use that term. Doesnt really bother me because I know the Dev team is going to do what they want to do. But if they want to appease the fans as they have stated many times this go around…they may want to avoid doing this NPC stuff as they have mentioned there will not be any NPC characters this time. I guess we will see how true that is come April 23
Only way to know for sure.
ME3 was the quintessential slap in the face. i think the runner up was the square enix president trolling a playstation event revealing the trailer to FF7 ps4 port of a PC port of a PS1 game that was released in the very early 2000s. the crowd reaction was pretty dreadful lol
I think @CausingThought6 basically summed it up. The AI versions of those characters in MKX are more or less incomplete cut and past jobs from MK9 and I have to admit I sort of give NRS credit. They could have cashed in and sold these as is under a “MK9 character pack” or some such pretty easily. Instead they made sure the characters moveset an inputs were not in the code.
As far as who returns, I have my character preferences too. But this is my least favorite point of discussion because it’s a no win for the developers. They can’t please all of the fans unless they release every single character in every game. This is untenable (unless you’re Tekken and just make the same game 7 times) and arguably bad for the sustainability of the genre. We want new and interesting characters. If fighting game fans continue to only buy and play games with the same roster eventually it’s going to ruin the whole business…
one thing i have to say is when they release characters from the past, as DLC, is also annoying. like SF5 with sakura, sagat, blanka. its like ok, these are the basic fighters from decades before. and we’re gonna pay more cash to play them again? yeaah, pretty lame. its not just SF5 doin it, its also T7 and SC6 with tira. id rather get new fighters and skill sets. so im also in agreement that NRS does deserve some credit as well.
Yeah I too am really surprised they didnt sell those characters as a DLC pack. Just about every time the Kombat pack was about to release one of those 3 DLC characters was on peoples guess list. I would have bought them if they released them. they just only had 1 variation which is one of the main reasons they didnt release.
Edit: I realise my two paragraphs don’t exactly support each other. So please just take them as two separate points. Thank you.
Yeah. Because developers totally shouldn’t be compensated for the extra work they do to bring us not only the base game but extra characters they couldn’t fit in the original plan. They should just give us these games for free and not feed themselves or keep the power on in their houses.
Game development is expensive. It’s even more expensive now. Sure, you can make the same game from the 90s with a quarter of the resources, but people don’t want those kinds of games. They want games to be bigger and more complex with each installment (ie. more expensive to make). The only way they could make their money back at all and NOT cut things out to sell them as DLC (or delay their creation to be released at a later date) is to have the base price be $80-$100. But we won’t pay for that. If they just did that people would say that they are being overcharged and not buy it. That price has to be reached with “extra” content. And even then people still hate it. We’re at this weird I pass where our value in the product does not equate to the tangibale value of the resources put into it.
point 1: so me being annoyed with having to pay for old characters with just a few new things added equates to me not wanting devs to get paid? ok.
point 2: but people are already paying beyond 80 to 100 bucks?
I’ll abandon point 1. I still don’t agree with you but I don’t really know what else to say. We have reached an impass.
But for point 2. What if there was no fighters pass or Delux Edition. Those characters were just in the base game. But the base game was $99.99. No marketing around that “extra content”. Just a $99.99 game. Would you still buy it? No figurines. No spundtrack. No steelbook case. No season pass (there isn’t one). The game is just sold at its actual cost. Do you think it’s still worth it.
LOL…thought you might find this interesting! (Fingers crossed)…you and I both!
But unfortunately I think this Dev that was interviewed ;mixed up tag mode with modifier assist mode. UH oh…could be an actually de-confirmation
