Had no idea the reveal was so close, I really want Mavado to come back (even though he’s got a split personality thanks to Cassie…ba bum tss)

What is it about him that appeals to you? And what would you like to see should he return?

Apparently both the official Twitch channel and Youtube as @anon39655210 mentioned.

Someone from the UK saw this in his local game shop:

Am I supposed to know what that is?

Yakuza looking badass with a long black leather jacket and the ability to stab you from metal spikes in his boots. I guess with DA I was missed Liu Kang and was looking for a replacement and Mavado just appealed to me. Plus he uses hook swords

In terms of hook swords I prefer Kabal. I love the super speed.

Well, in gaming shops like GameStop, they put these up to show that you can pre-order the game.
And this guy saw this to show that the Switch version seems to come out later than for PS4 and Xbone.

Oh. I thought you were bringing attention to the character in silhouette.

Also, of course the Switch version is coming later! The dev kit is completely different. They can’t just change the build export setting and plop it on Switch, it’s got the power of last-gen hardware! It’s likely being ported by a different company and you can only do so much on a port job when the initial game is still in active development, so it probably started work a bit later than the actual game.

From your lips to Boon’s ears, man! I’d love to see that.

I know you weren’t asking me, but I’d like to respond. It’s a good question, for sure. On one hand, he had Kabal’s hookswords, which was a terrible decision. I know they explained why he had them, but explaining something like that still doesn’t justify it in terms of creating unique and compelling gameplay for a character making their first impression on fans.

I’d argue that most of the time, giving a character someone else’s signature move(s) or in this case weapon does little to ingratiate them to the fanbase. Didn’t seem to help Jarek in MK4, Kira, or Shujinko and a lot of fans seemed down on mournful Kitana in MKX as well.

Add to that the fact that he only had two special moves that actually attacked the opponent (and they were high / low variations of the same move, nobless), and he definitely felt bare bones at best, and perhaps unnecessary at worst. Of all the mistakes made during the 3D era, I still think Mavado and the Red Dragon as a whole are near the top for me.

But, on the other hand, I can’t help but see a massive amount of potential in Mavado, perhaps more than any other 3D characters (except for maybe Fujin and Sareena).

For starters, he has a cool look with the trench coat, the hair, the outfit, and while I know stances got changed around a bit in the 3D era, I thought his long fist stance worked for him. He looked kinda like an evil Liu Kang without Netherrealm or zombie business of course lol.

The real potential I see in him though lies in 1. Making the Red Dragon a compelling, viable threat to the Black Dragon as well as a worthwhile plot thread. I could see Kano’s son fitting in here well. But also (mainly) in 2. His rope bands.

I thought their effort in this during the 3D era was admirable, I guess, but still ultimately limited both by the 3D plane as well as the tech at the time. But on a 2D plane, he could easily be a fun, speedy, high mobility character with some really fun ranged attacks courtesy of those ropes.

I hate to throw this comparison around, but Omega Red was my main in X-Men: Children of the Atom because of the way he used his metal coils. He could spin the coils in his hands, lash them like a whip, throw from distance and in mid-air from distance, he could combo in to mid-air throws; his coils were constantly flailing around and wreaking havoc.

I’d say a more modern version of this character would be Kan Ra minus the sand traps and curses; mainly the way he uses his bandages. But either way, using a template of those two characters to start with could really make for a fun and exciting character for Mavado and I’d like to see that. I don’t think MK has that kind of character, so it’d be cool to see. I’m sure they could also come up with some other unique, gory ways to use those bands as well.

So yeah, I just see the blueprint for a lot of interesting ideas in Mavado. Whether it’s metal spikes in his boots and/or crazy acrobatic rope shinanigans, I’d like to see the Red Dragon get a fair shake in MK and I think he, not Daegon, would be the ideal way to bring them back.

Agree 100%. Nothing says “I’m a stand-in for a character you actually want” more than giving something that ingrained / coded to a character to someone else. It just doesn’t work, and it kinda short changes that character too IMO. Instead of giving Mavado something cool and uniquely his, he got something that was uniquely Kabal’s, which likely just made people want Kabal that much more.

If Mavado got, for example, twin golden, ruby encrusted short swords that spun in his hands and could even be spun at a distance with his ropes or launched from the ropes in to the opponent so he could throw from distance… Stuff like that could give him both style and individuality.

But yeah, he got short changed, much like Kira did IMO. Cool look and a compelling backstory wasted by having Kano and Sonya’s moves. I’d love to see her come back too, but she’s probably even less likely than Mavado. Or at least she would be if there were a percentage lower than zero lol.

Yup.

But at least in Tekken’s case, the soundtrack is memorable and noticeable. People actually talk about some of the soundtracks for Tekken 7 and enjoy it while others can’t even hear the MK/IJ soundtracks, let alone find it interesting.

If you ask me, I think the MK9 soundtrack stood out more because of the remixes of the past game’s stages. MKX kinda lacks that since there are almost no returning stages and the only one still lacks a song that people can point out.

So apart from the current confirmed characters why don’t we alittle guessing on who’s gonna be revealed.

Who I’m expecting to see.
-Kitana
-Sub-Zero
-Cassie
-New Character
-Jhonny Cage

Who I hope to see.
-Reptile
-Noob Saibot

What about you folks?

-shrug- I liked Mournful Kitana. On the whole I think Jade is a decent character, but nothing overly special. If they’ve got some cool ideas for her then sure, put her in, but if all they can think of is a single playstyle for her (in the context of MKX), then it’s better that she not be included than have a half-assed toolkit. I’ll take function over fanservice any day of the week.

Tonya best womyn!

Tanya was super wack. They made her considerably less wack in MKX, but then they muffed that up by releasing her in a near-broken state. Moving forward I hope they can continue to improve upon what they did in Injustice 2, and release DLC characters who may be strong, but not overly so. MKX was horrible about having 5/8 of a Top 8 be some particular DLC character and variation, simply because that character/variation combination was so overwhelmingly strong. Tanya had some cool stuff in her kit, but the way she launched left a permanent bad taste in my mouth.

At the very least she had a more faithful version of Jade’s moveset in her Dragon Naginata variation; a lot of stuff Jade had with her staff in MK9 was remade with Tanya in MKX (including combos, something Mournful Kitana grossly lacked). I do agree that she as a character was still lacking (especially compared to other remade characters like Tremor), but they at least tried to make her a more interesting character instead of outright removing her from the canon (though I still prefer the more cold-hearted personality she had in MK Deception).

Still less egregious than the old Tekken 6 tournaments having all top 8 players using Bob, but at least NRS learned their lesson. In fact I recall Tremor being one of the worst characters in the game when he launched, so even back in MKX they tried to avoid another Tanya incident (albeit in the worst way possible).
