Mortal Kombat 11

I really don’t get the sentiment about “the grind” in this game. What are you grinding for, exactly, that you’re not getting?

I wouldn’t say that I’ve played MK11 more than a lot of other people here, but I still have a ton of stuff that I like for each character, including maskless Sub-Zero, maskless Skarlet and a wide variety of other stuff for characters.

If you’re just playing this game in order to grind it to completion, then I can tell you that’s likely not going to happen for a long time and the reasons why make all the sense in the world for both the fans and players.

NRS games typically have a large buy in at the beginning and then a pretty quick drop off in terms of player base within the first month or two. NRS has really tried to remedy that issue with the last Injustice and now MK11.

They’ve really tried to make their games tournament viable, they’ve also given players tons of stuff to do, tons of items to earn through towers and unlock in the krypt, and they keep increasing the amount of DLC characters from game to game.

Now they have these seasons which you can unlock even more stuff, which I’m personally enjoying a lot. I wouldn’t have tried playing online if not for the seasons and I’m really liking it. It’s nice to find out that I can at play to a near .500 average by the time the season ends. Plus, it gives me even more to do between DLC characters.

This is honestly the longest I’ve stuck with an MK game since MK2 and I played the crap out of that game primarily because I always had friends nearby to play match after match with. I’ve played MK11 almost entirely solo. I’d have to think many players are in that boat as well.

It certainly doesn’t hurt that the game’s also really fun to play. I’ve learned Kung Lao to the point where I know his fastest attacks, when I should try to attack, defend, or do nothing, what strategy I want to employ, what moves I need to use to adapt to the opponents strategy, when to use certain combos and mixups and I’ve gotten to a level where I feel the mind games, the conditioning, etc actually come in to play and while NONE of that makes me “good” at the game, it allows me to enjoy it on a deeper level than I normally would.

All of that is a (very) long way of saying that I’m enjoying the journey. Sure there are mini destinations off in the distance in the form of DLC characters, and sure maybe sometime in a year or two, I’d like to have a vast majority of the available stuff for each character, but why would I care about that right now? I’m just having fun playing, and I like the feeling that I’m also unlocking stuff, getting more koins to unlock stuff, and so on and so forth.

My only gripe right now is that I don’t have anything to spend souls and hearts on anymore, so two game currencies are essentially useless to me. I was kinda hoping they’d add new areas to Shang Tsung’s Island to explore, with a bunch of chests to unlock, over time. But that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Either way though, that one gripe aside, I’m just enjoying the game a lot. I still have nights where it sucks me in for a lot more time than I originally intended, and that’s saying something for a game that’s been out for a few months already. I’ve purchased other games since, but this is the one I keep coming back to.

If you don’t enjoy the gameplay and the characters enough to keep playing, I can understand that. Anything beyond that though seems like it might be a bit of a strange reason to uninstall it, but whatever.

I don’t know. I haven’t really felt a reason to touch it since i finished arcade mode. Except to do Shang Tsung’s arcade mode. Like, I don’t feel like i’ll ever get the specific skins I want unless I let the game become my life so I just don’t bother. I have other games to play.

Don’t know who you are but I’ll reply anyway.

I’ve played Smash Ultimate. Never said I wasn’t a fan of unlockable characters so…try again I guess?

I think it’s natural for people to either burn out on a game after enjoying it for a while or to simply find the things they enjoy, finish them, and move on to something else. That’s essentially what I did with MKX. It just didn’t really hold my interest for some reason. Maybe that’s the case with you?

If not, and you think it’s an issue with the game itself, then I’d be curious to know what reason(s) would you need to keep coming back? I mean, here are the reasons they’ve given players:

-The gameplay itself (ie playing it because you simply enjoy it)
-Konsumables, Skins and Accessories from Towers of Time (including team up tower bosses, character towers, summoned towers and the Fire God Liu Kang skin tower among others)
-Konsumables, Skins and Accessories from the Krypt
-Konsumables, Skins and Accessories from AI Battles
-Skins from Online Seasons
-Regular Towers (Survival, Arcade, etc)
-Customization mode to set your special moves, skins, accessories, entrances and exits
-Story Mode
-Practice mode, fatality training
-Regular online casual matches

Am I missing anything?

Either way, that seems like an awful lot, and while I know some are fans of their more MK adjacent modes like Chess Kombat and what not, I’m glad they stuck with MK related modes only for this game.

Personally, I don’t worry much about finding exactly what I’m looking for in terms of skins or accessories. It’ll happen over time or it won’t. But if you’re not overly enamored with the fighting itself and you’re just looking to see endings and get the story or anything else for that matter, then no problem. I hear ya.

This.

Augments, Konsumables, Skins, etc,.

Good for you.

Nothing strange about it.

I forgot about this so I’ll answer this simply.

No.

You’re saying that you’re just not getting any at all? I mean, they’re in the game. They exist. Many of the skins and accessories tell you where they’re located (ie the krypt or AI battles or whatever).

So you do enjoy the gameplay and the characters? Just trying to make sure I understand where you’re coming from. If you like the game, then why uninstall it?

I was actually trying not to answer this one. Simply, I don’t like the features behind this game anymore and how NRS handles their servers.

Anymore questions?

So, you enjoy playing the game, but you’re uninstalling it because you don’t like certain features and how NRS handles their servers?

Why would you uninstall a game that you enjoy playing? That’s the part I’m having a hard time with. If you get stuff by playing the game and you enjoy playing it, then what’s the problem? I’m also not sure what issues you have with their servers so if you could elaborate on why this is such an issue as to make you want to uninstall a game that you enjoy playing, I’d be curious to hear it.

Fixed.

Also, yesterday…KBL entered it’s second season…A LOT of players were unable to connect.

Leave me be.

ROFL, okay then.

You’re actively discussing the game and your opinions and people are debating or presenting counter points, and then you’re reacting with an antagonistic tone. If you’re done with the conversation walk away from it, but announcing “I quit and I uninstalled” and then being prickly when people try to discuss it isn’t the way to engage in conversation.

When people suggest that I’ve “ran out of PS4” space…they should also be told the same thing.

Now if you’ll excuse me.

So any predictions on when we’ll get Nightwolf and Sindel? Boon’s been teasing both lately. One would have to think Nightwolf’s first. Kinda hoping he arrives in the next few weeks, but I’m glad they’re taking their time, especially after all the talk about NRS and crunch.

As I say whenever people leave a game: goodbye and best wishes. That’s pretty much all that needs to be said.

@Iago407 I’d assume Nightwolf given the teases. Sometime in the next month would be my guess (likely post Evo).

Idk. The gameplay just isn’t satisfying. I feel like, I just keep doing the same three moves over and over. Which is really sad for me because it has so many of my favorite characters. The grinding through towers to unlock stuff for the Krypt just doesn’t feel satisfying because the actual fights feel kind of monotonous. And even then, I don’t really care about consumables or skins. I’d much rather grind for additional story content or something. Maybe special chapters tied to special skins, that could be cool. I’m not saying there’s not a lot to do. I just don’t like a lot of what’s there and I fear I3 for that reason.

I hope Nightwolf is really cool and has viable tournament variations so we can actually have people explore him

Makes sense. I could imagine an EVO trailer for Nightwolf, maybe for Sindel as well, though one character is probably what we’ll end up with.

Well, for me, I think a lot of the strategy has come from trying to learn Kung Lao’s complete moveset so I have a tool for every occasion, an idea of how I want to approach the opponent or what type of tactics I can change to if what I’m doing isn’t working. I enjoy trying to condition opponents as well.

It’s definitely a slower pace, but it feels very rewarding to me, and with only a handful of exceptions, I feel like I’m holding my own against most people in ranked. Have you played ranked at all? I know you don’t usually like playing online, but I’ve actually really enjoyed it, aside from one person last night that felt compelled to send my 25 invites in the span of five minutes after I beat him. Not sure what the deal was there.

But yeah, I normally don’t play online, but I’m finding the matchups and learning my opponent and when it’s their turn or my turn or whatever has been pretty great. That’s just me though. I can absolutely understand why you wouldn’t get the same out of it.

Yeah I’ll admit that the towers don’t really grab my attention as much as they once did. Plus I already have most of the gear from them already (in towers of time, I mean). I still pop in and play every now and then though.

I think it really does come down to whether you like the gameplay and if that’s enough of a reason to play when combined with whatever small reward is doled out. If you’re playing for the reward in spite of the gameplay then yeah, it might be time to try and look for something else and there’s certainly nothing wrong with that.

Yeah more story would be awesome, and I’m almost kinda surprised they don’t try and put together some DLC packs with more chapters, but I’m sure there are some logistical issues, such as bringing in the voice actors again, presumably doing more motion capturing, and of course writing it out and what not. Plus I’m sure those story mode chapters take a long time to create in general. That feels like an easier said than done kind of deal.

That said, it might be less of an issue if they could maybe take a more Shadowlords approach / MK arcade endings approach and stick more with narrated pictures. I think there’s still a ton more story to be told with these characters and whatever they do, it’d be nice if they could find a way to keep some of the narrative threads going or reveal even more.

I mean, they went to the trouble of getting the original Shang Tsung from the 1995 movie, did all of this voice capture with him, and he doesn’t even have a role in the main story at all? I still think NRS really missed the boat with arcade endings still being in “what if” territory. We know who actually defeats Kronika, so how about instead of telling us how Character X is going to do as the god of time, you actually further their story a bit? Just seems like a waste.

Well, I think in fighters, the main stuff you’re going to find in terms of in game rewards are currency, outfits, accessories, and artwork. Assuming the time and logistical issues prevent them from doing full on story chapters as DLC, which seems entirely possible, what stuff would you want an MK game to have? What modes? What types of rewards to keep you playing? Just curious.

Same here. I don’t overly love his toothy skull cap thing, but I’m sure that’s just an accessory. Otherwise, he looks pretty great. I’m also hoping he has some tournament viable variations. Shang Tsung, as much love and attention as they gave him, has two relatively boring tourney variations, and neither one has any morphing.

I’m hoping they’ll add one more tourney variation to each character that helps give them some parts of their movelists that are being ignored at the moment. I’d love to use Kung Lao’s “Great Kung Lao” moves.

He was desperate for a re-match. People are weird…

Yeah it was strange. Dude was teabagging through the ENTIRE match. Never seen that before. I beat him 2-0, 2-0 and in rather convincing fashion in the second set. After that, the invites rolled in nonstop until I finally blocked him. If they’d sent me one invite, I might’ve taken them up on it regardless of the teabagging but 25? Nah. I’m good lol.
