Played a bit more last night and had a few thoughts on it:
For one thing, I think the characters move and animate far better than MKX. Everything feels more deliberate and less herky-jerky like many NRS games tend to feel. They said the release version will be faster though, so who knows. Either way, I’m digging the movement.
My problem, and this is definitely a “me” issue, is that I’m having a hard time connecting things together. I can do the simple three or four hit combos, of course, but for whatever reason, I’m having a hard time going in to special moves off of those combos. Not sure why. I’m sure I’ll figure things out once I can use practice mode when the game releases, but man… So many things feel like they should connect that don’t for me right now.
I also need to go back and watch them breakdown Jade and Skarlet, because I can’t seem to find anything interesting to do with them lol. It’s kind of annoying that so many of Skarlet’s moves you can choose from are buff type moves, but I guess that’s more of her gameplan this time around. Jade, I honestly have no idea what to do with, and I know Steve really likes her though so I’ll have to check out that kombat kast again for sure.
The stage music, as with every MK since roughly MK2, is ambient, barely noticeable and one of the weakest parts of the game. It’s honestly baffling to me that they’re still putting together such utterly forgettable music for a game that otherwise has a masterful level of presentation.
That’s probably a bit harsh on my part, but man… I listen to KI’s stage music and then MK’s and the difference is night and day. Kinda wish they’d hire Mick Gordon. I’m not saying I need a ton of metal in MK, but he’s got a substantial range and could definitely put together a soundtrack that both works with the stages and sticks in your head.
On the plus side, I absolutely love the stages in this game, the character designs, the customization options for both the characters and their gameplay… This is a really wonderful, well-made game and I can’t wait to play more of it! I liked MKX, but this game just feels so right to me. Now I just have to stop sucking at it so badly lol.
