So true.
I’m playing SL these days and it’s definitely not for me…simply it’s not what I look for in a beat’em up.
Left aside the grinding they put again (I’m sick tired of grinding, luckily I prefer normal skins to mimic ones), I don’t like to fight broken characters with 1000 perks and the need to manage my resources in order to be even more broken than my opponent.
Fun the first/second run to me…after that I return gladly to shadow lab.
Shadow lab does rule
Man, I just heard DOOM is getting an arcade mode. DOOM!!! How is it a game like DOOM gets one and KI doesn’t?
Because BGS have more $$$ than IG…
True, but KI is produced by Microsoft, I think that company has enough money to pay for an extension of a mode basically already implemented.
No one in the interwebz knows how KI has sold but, with that “Thank you, KI Community! Over 6 MILLION fighters in Killer Instinct. You all rock and we love you for it!” pinned on KI twitter page, it’s safe to assume that it did good (yes, I know it’s f2p) enough for something like an arcade game and/or an extended use of shadow data.
Just my 2 cents anyway.
I would like a classic KI Arcade mode for each character just with a more modern flare so a mix of season 1 and 2, a fight your rival cut scene a opening and ending scene and let you decide the ending based on your actions. Not a huge fan of shadowlords
I like this idea, we can keep shadow lords as more of the “story mode” but I would like an arcade mode as well with rival cut scenes an opening cut scene and a choose your own ending thing like KI2 for arcade mode, it does not have to be great it could be still images but I just do not like shadow lords being are only way to see more story.
In MKX and MK9 they had story mode as well as story in arcade mode, same with persona arena, blazblue, and guilty gear. Its great to have a mode like shadow lords to add more content to single player but it just does not scratch my itch when it comes to single player.
True. Some fighting games have both story mode and an arcade mode with various endings.
I’m not sure I understand the premise. You want bite sized experiences because SL is more of a steak and less of a microwave burrito (or something along those lines), but I pop in to SL, play a few matches, and pop out all the time.
Is it just more the fact that you want something more traditional? You want to be able to play X amount of matches every time, get to the boss, and then get your story ending?
I guess I’m just trying to find out what value this brings that other modes don’t already have.
I mean sure, adding in ladders, especially with the traditional arcade fixings (as was suggested above) sounds great, and if character endings can be actual canon and help supplement the story, then it sounds like something I’d definitely enjoy.
I’m just not sure how long I’d play it after I got all of the content from the mode (ie the character endings) when there’s an infinite mode that’ll likely continue to have new content added at least in the near term.
The “problem” I, personally, have with SL is that its purpose is to become as OP (read: broken) as possible, more and more.
The opponents are broken due to perks (artifacts, consumables) and you need to be more broken with more powerful perks, so you play again and again to gain money needed to buy things to equip and consume in three turns…and so on.
Not my idea of a beat’em up, it’s a funny mode to try sometimes like that MK mode (test your luck or something similar), just that.
If Arcade Mode was built for every character in the game, at the very least I’d be fine if this was the end result…

Good idea, this really needs to happen.
Yeah, pretty much this. But on top of that, outside of the disjointed story mode(s) there isn’t a vanilla ladder in KI…everything has a hook. Survival caries over damage and only gives you back a set amount. SL everyone has numerous buffs & nerfs. S1 only has a hidden boss, S2 only has a “boss” in name.
IMHO Fulgore needs to be on this list as well, considering he was always kinda considered KI’s sub boss…even to the point of being S1’s end game…not a boss, but an endgame for sure.
I’d hope they at least keep the trend of fighting 11 opponents throughout the whole mode. That way it references at the original games with their 11 character roster.
Or maybe after the 10th fight with either Shago or Omen (depending on criteria), fights 11, 12, and 13 occur with the last three bosses. (Aria, Eyedol, then Gargos)
13 which implies on the number 3, with this game technically being the third Killer Instinct, and it also having 3 seperate seasons. (I think it’d be a nice nod at least)
Good point.
If anything, Fulgore could also take the 10th slot, with Omen and Shadow Jago being the secret sub bosses (much like Akuma and Evil Ryu)
Example (Same as Before but…)
- Rival Match
- Sub Boss: Fulgore (Omen or Shago depending on criteria)
- Aria, Eyedol, Gargos (either criteria per boss, or all at once)
@SageBLOKHEAD and @WrathOfFulgore do you guys think the boss should be character specific? (I.E. orchid fights aria, jago fights gargos etc.)
Personally if it was up to me they would just have multiple towers where you get to pick your boss.
I like the idea. If they ever did decide to make the mode like that, I’d probably picture these as the characters final battles…
Jago > Gargos
Sabrewulf > Aria
Glacius > Aria
Thunder > Aria
Sadira > Aria
Orchid > Aria
Spinal > Eyedol
Fulgore > Aria
TJ Combo > Aria
Maya > Gargos
Kan Ra > Gargos
Riptor > Aria
Aganos > Aria
Hisako > Aria
Cinder > Aria
Aria > Gargos
Kim Wu > Gargos
Tusk > Eyedol
Mira > Gargos
Rash > Aria
Arbiter > Gargos
General RAAM > Eyedol
Shadow Jago > Gargos
Omen > Gargos
Eyedol > Gargos
Gargos > Eyedol
IMHO that would probably be ok…if there was a method of switching to a different end boss if you so desired…like to say Jago would by default end on Gargos, but if you met certain criteria you would end on Aria instead.
I think it should be based on what you do in the game, if you do a certain criteria you unlock an alternate ending, that way you can add replay ability and reference KI2
for example
normal ending is you fight fulgore and aria
if you preform an ultra in 4 matches you change it to omen and Eyedol
if you ultra your rival and never lose a round and preform 4 ultras you instead fight shadow jago and gargos.
thats just an example though they could do what ever they want
