Why I don't Want Any More Seasons

I would like to say one thing on this matter:

SFV’s ponytail physics look ridiculous.

Oh would you look at that, an LCD post I disagree with! And here I thought Tuesday was a few days off…

I have nothing to add to this discussion that hasn’t already been stated, I just want to rectify something:

HKsmash has not “quit” the game (unless he’s made this announcement a day ago since the last time I’d checked on him). HKsmash frequently posts TJ Combo exhibition matches and, as far as I can tell, they are among his most viewed and liked recent uploads. In fact, I’ve noticed him participating more in tournaments over the past few weeks.

He’s only pledged not to >stream< KI anymore after the whole “8 Bit Beatdown drama” (and he’s not even consistent in that regard as, on October 23, he’d posted on his YouTube account 1:22:07 of him streaming KI to make up for putting off another stream. (It may or may not be worth noting that the the final few minutes of the footage ended with himself competing in a KI tournament.)

Apologies if you’d meant that he quit the game “as a streamer”.

No, he “quit” KI cause he was getting death threats.

What!? Death threats!? He was the nicest guy I met at CEO! Why would anyone send him death threats? That guy is a pillar of the pro community. Granted, I don’t watch his streams, but from what I know of him in person, he was a genuinely nice guy! He doesn’t derserve to be treated like that (nobody does).

Why would he get death threats?

I’ve gotten a very different impression of him every time I’ve seen him around…

It just occurred to me that I’m thinking of someone else… I was thinking of Thrash Heavy. Sorry, my bad.

I’m just gonna start making threads under a different name and trick you into agreeing with me

Because people are buttholes, especially online. It’s not uncommon, unfortunately.
I remember it happened to some of the dudes in charge of Call of Duty balancing after they nerfed the sniper rifles in Blops 2. It’s happened to people who post opinion pieces pretty frequently.

It’s hard to explain why these people do what they do apart from them being pieces of ■■■■. Death threats are never cool.

Really? Granted, I was mainly going off of memory. While I do remember him mentioning he received death threats in that video, since he’d made the announcement soon after the 8bit beatdown incident, citing both as a culmination of the negative direction he felt the community was going in, I was under the impression that “8-gate” was the final straw…

I guess I’ll just need to find and rematch the video…

Be sure to wear a pretty dress!

Just Want Ultimates/No Mercy’s for Everyone Just Not Fair That Shadow Jago Only Have One I be cool with just update the game and add more content

I never understood why most people think that all a KI sequel would be is just a graphics update and that’s it and not IG making new gameplay mechanics, a better training mode, giving the characters they didn’t create like Jago and give them different normals, have/take away special moves, new instinct ideas for the character etc.

The entire game would be vastly different in pretty much every way. It would be its own game entirely.

That means it would stand on its own, not on the shoulders of the community that liked KI 2013. It’s possible that many of us who like the current game wouldn’t like the new game, for instance. It’s also possible people who don’t like the current game would like the new game.

Basically, it would be trying to rebuild its reputation from scratch, including all the perils of trying to make a new fighting game in today’s market.

I see this as a win win situation honestly. There is nothing that says both games (KI 2013 and the sequel) couldn’t coexist together just like Melee and Smash4 do now, both which have outstanding player bases. Having both games still being played at tournaments or just in general is just more publicity for KI. More KI is never a bad thing.

Do you really believe the existence of a brand new KI game would not completely usurp the previous game? Outside of Melee and Smash 4 (which is a thing for a whole host of crazy, once-in-a-lifetime reasons), I can’t think of a single example of this in the last 15 years.

Fighting games largely die when the direct sequel to them is released, in almost 100% of cases.

Melee and Smash 4 only coexist because of how radically different they are. On the surface it’s the same, but competitively? Way different. Also, Smash’s player base is much bigger.

Good point, I don’t think anyone plays MK9 anymore.

A sequel is inevitable, which isn’t any different than adding a new season if you really think about it. People stopped playing when S2 dropped and so on, and new people come and take their place as we’ve seen. The only difference is that a sequel provides a way for them to have more creative freedom with the game instead of being locked down because of Double Helix and the Hex Engine.

Point being that if people have a real passion for this version of the game then people will continue playing it especially if as you said didn’t end up liking the new sequel. Another great example is Diablo II. That game still receives updates to this day even though its been quote “dead” for over a decade.

If you’re talking about playing it just to play it, sure, KI will probably continue to be played even in the advent of a sequel. However, if you’re talking about tournament play (which given your usual focus I would assume you are?), KI2 is pretty much certain to “kill” KI 2013. The scene isn’t big enough as is that there would be any merit in continuing to hold it at offline events.

I agree with the sentiment that a sequel doesn’t have to kill the game that came before it. The two almost certainly won’t be able to coexist as main tournament games but there’s plenty of older games that have many players despite having sequels.

Personally, though, I don’t want a KI sequel. I think for a variety of reasons it might not be as profitable or popular as people assume, and I would really rather IG do everything they can with this game, then move on to something else. An original fighter, maybe.
