So Lately Ive been Playing with The Steam Input Profiling Software and Trying out Various Ideas about How to use it…
At first I started out with Harmless things… For example In games where Running/Sprinting is a seperate Button… I have setup my Left Stick to input The Sprint Button if it touches the Edges (A.K.A “Outer Ring Binding”)… Meaning I can run in all directions without having to press any additional buttons…
I have a Fightpad which just feels good to play on so I tend to use that to play some Action Games… If I need to manipulate the Camera I have a Modifier that changes the Left Stick to behave like The Right Stick if needed… Some players with Disabilities have used this feature to play entirely with one hand.
Then I moved on to Uhm… “less Convenient” experimentation by enabling Turbo Functionality on The Face Buttons… This makes button mashing QTE’s easier to do… I used this feature alot in Lords Of Shadow because there’s alot of Button Mashing there… In Bayonetta this allows you to do things you clearly aren’t mean to do like get up to 20% more Halos on Torture Attacks.
And then I went Full on Darth Vader by changing specific Button Presses to toggle mode…
… I used this in Cuphead to shoot constantly without having to Hold down the button
Fun Fact
Incase you didn’t know… One of the lesser know Critisms of Cuphead is the Default Control Layout doesn’t allow you to shoot, dash or Jump Simultaneously and the way the Game plays also doesn’t discourage you from doing this either… Hence alot of Players Swapped the Shoot button to one of the Triggers so they could Hold it down without losing access to the jump button (you’l also see this sort of thing in Devil May Cry and Furi)… But I thought… Why Stop There… Why not Go all the way and So I set Shoot to toggle… And now by Pressing the button … Cuphead will shoot indefinitely until I press it again. Combine this with the Homing Bullets and this takes off a Significant amount of Mental Burden off your Shoulders.
I did the same thing In Devil May Cry 5 to charge Nero’s Blue Rose indefinitely which is how most Hardcore DMC players play anyway.
But here’s the real kicker.
So…you guys know that Vergil in The Devil Cry series doesn’t use a gun like Dante/Nero… Instead he has Summoned Swords… The key feature about this mechanic us that there is no Animation for it Whatsoever. Press Shoot at any time regardless of whatever else you might be doing… Results in summoning a single Sword… So using Steam Input… I set the button that summons the swords to Both Turbo and Toggle… And sure enough I can do combos and dodge while Constantly Firing Summoned Swords 24/7.
I reckon you can do the same thing with V and Devil Sword Dante in Devil May Cry 5…
At this point I can’t tell where the Accessibility ends and the Cheating Begins.
!!!
Just for Funsies I did the same thing in Street Fighter V… I enabled Turbo Functionality on Light Punch (The Lowest Priority Normal) and now I can play Ed and Blanka (E. Honda requires more Experimenting) more comfortably. Unlike everybody else Cancelling Light Punch or Medium Kick into Electricity/Flicker for me is even less Consistent than Shoryuken is…
And if you think that’s Sinister… You can bind the entire Raging Demon input to a single Button
!!!
Interestingly enough… I believe it’s Possible to use two different Controllers to mimick a single Controller (with Different Bindings) essentially turning any single player Game into a Haphazard Co-Op Game… But I haven’t tried that yet.
Anyway someone made a Video Series on how the Software Works…
I wonder if Sony and Microsoft are planning on expanding Controller Customizations to be similar to this (They already allowyou to alter some Controller Functions)… And more importantly… How would it affect the FGC if they do
!!!
Edit:
I forgot to mention that Steam allows you to add non-Steam Games (or any Applications in general) to your Library… Doing so allows those Games to be Profiled using the Steam Input Feature… A pretty potent Combo when it comes to Convenience.
