So KI won’t be KI until you can combo in to Mortal Kombat fatalities that actually won’t be fatalities at all since this is a T rated game? Well, okay, if that’s what you really want, that’s fine. I’m just not sure why that’s such a big deal for some people, but to each his own.
Personally, I enjoy this game a lot in part because of the content delivery mechanism. As much as I hated the idea before the game launched, actually experiencing it has been amazing. I got to know those original six characters much more than I otherwise would have and the same goes for each character we’ve had since.
I’ve really liked being able to learn a little bit of a new character and having to enjoy and appreciate them as an individual experience and feel the excitement of anticipating the next character or bit of content and constantly having that “more to come” feeling down the road for the last three years. Wondering what cool stuff they’ll do next is part of what keeps me coming back.
Now, the next KI can go one of two ways:
-Normal retail release: Personally, I don’t love the idea right now. For one thing, we’d have to wait for a whole new game, which could be years, but I also don’t love the idea of getting an entire roster of characters that I don’t know when I’ve been able to learn each character one at a time in the current game.
Looking back on it now, I kinda feel like one of the reasons why I didn’t stick with MKX all that long in spite of being a huge MK fan since the original was that it was just too daunting to learn such a large roster of characters and then variations on those characters. I could never escape the feeling that picking one variation on one character and practicing with it meant neglecting such a massive amount of possibilities in the rest of the roster and all of their variations or feeling like I’d never know anything about the game because there was just too much to learn.
Sure, for people that zero in on a main in KI and ignore the other twenty something characters, I’m sure this isn’t quite as big of a deal, but still, if you play at a relatively high level, you’re telling people to start over from scratch, not just in a “they changed a few things and now my main feels different” kind of way, but in a “this is a completely new character way.” So obviously a new game would effect casuals and hardcore players alike.
There’s also the fact that if they do it this way, a significant portion of fan feedback during the process would likely be cut out of the equation. Sure, they can do surveys and they can view responses to whatever content they want to show, but at the end of the day, they’re going to release a whole, complete product as opposed to continuously updating during the process of releasing smaller bits of content and I’d have to think that would have an effect on how much our input goes in to their thought process and how responsive they can ultimately be in the game itself.
-Continued seasonal approach: As much as I don’t love the other idea, I can honestly say I’m not a fan of this at all. We have an amazing game already that many of us have put years worth of time in to and now we’d have to start over with eight characters, wondering who will return and who won’t, because you know those people saying “it’s not KI without Eyedol or Ultimates” or whatever will be saying the exact same thing about every single character, mechanic, and mode in the current KI.
I mean, if people feel like this KI has some issues with being disjoined from one season to the next, I fail to see how giving us this model again would alleviate those issues. Yeah, MS had two different companies working on the game, so I suppose character designs might be more similar, I guess? I dunno, that doesn’t really seem to me like a great reason to drop this game and start over.
Now, I get it, we’ll have to move on eventually. But what is honestly propelling people to move on right now? We have a great thing here. Are graphics really that important? If MS/IG said that they would undertake a project ala stage relighting to fix some characters faces, hair, retros etc, would that put your mind at ease on the current product, or are you really convinced that Unreal 4 or anything else MS/IG could use on a sequel would be so far above and beyond what we currently have that you’d rather drop the current game?
Do you think that a new KI game will bring some sort of press or audience in that the current KI doesn’t? I’ve heard people say this before and I’m not convinced. I don’t see how a new KI season announced at E3 garners any less attention than a new KI game announced at E3.
Maybe they make something that’s more of a fluid vision if it’s a game and not a seasonal model, but even then, what if I don’t like that fluid vision and what if they don’t update the game the way they update this game?
I know, that’s all the possible downsides and there could just as easily be upsides. A new game could be much better than what we currently have. That’s certainly possible. I guess when it comes down to it though, I really like what this game has an does, and I have yet to hear a single reason why this needs a sequel and why that’s a better idea than new content for this game.
They’ve said that they’ll keep making content until we don’t want it. I still want it.
Bring on season 4.
