What is this problem with animations? It’s a problem I didn’t even know about until a couple months ago, and now I hear about it everywhere. What is it, the new nitpick of the week until something else starts to go wrong across the board?
It’s like in Mortal Kombat 9/X, where there’s just not enough weight behind their attacks. Like, just stretching out their leg as a kick… if that hit IRL, it wouldn’t hurt, it would just touch you, because there’s no force behind it. Stuff like that.
Cody has a few attacks like that, while Falke’s almost entire moveset is like that.
It’s a matter of feedback to many people, kind of like in FPSes when people complain the guns feel like toys because it feels empty to shoot them (good example being the original Serious Sam). And as Incubus said, in NRS games especially attacks feel too light even when it’s supposed to be an attack that hurls the opponent through a wall or something.
There was also that A.B.I guy on Youtube who talked in a good amount of detail about how bad animations (in NRS games especially) can hurt a game’s appeal to people some months back, which a lot of people latched onto because it resonated with their opinions. Personally his videos didn’t say anything I didn’t already know (and to be frank, I only bash bad animations when they explicitly make the gameplay hard to see), but it probably explains why you heard so much recent talks about animation quality.
Honestly, it’s something I never really notice. The only time I do is with Darkside in I2. His punches look off. Even when it’s pointed out to me.
I couldn’t get through that guy’s videos. He might have made a good point here or there, but mostly he just bashed NRS, their games, and their characters.
If you didn’t watch his videos through, how do you know what he was saying in them?
Put you inner fanboy aside and watch them with clear eyes. Don’t take notice of his personal opinions, but rather see what he is pointing out about the animations. Because he’s not wrong.
I really wish people would be a little more careful about recognizing the difference between something that is “low quality” and something that they just don’t like.
Cody has one janky move in the form of his standing middle kick that doesn’t really look like it would have much power behind it. But most of his animations are fine. Most of his moves show power being developed through his body and there’s appropriate motion throughout the character model not just in the attacking limb. He doesn’t have a lot of flashy windup or recovery. But that’s a style not a quality issue.
I got about halfway through the MKX one before I decided to stop watching. I didn’t even bother with the Injustice one. Someone should produce an edit with all of his personal biases edited out so it doesn’t anger people like me who actually like the games, their characters, and stories.
Or people should just learn not to get so easily offended when someone has another opinion than them.
When someone is writing critique, it is important to leave as much of your own personal preference out of the information you present, and focus solely on the technical aspects. And if you do bring in your own opinions, you need to isolate them from your arguments. It’s basic stuff you learn on day one of any English class. Once you bring in your own personal preferences, it undermines your arguments that are more factual. Watch any game reviewer on YouTube and you will see what I mean.
I played abit more of the 30th anv edition today. It felt better than the first day I played it…it made me want to play SFV. Im goign to wait till Cody releaes though so I can get my fix all in one play.
I think I like Alpha 3 the best with 3rd strike very close 2nd.
Eh. I think Cody has a weird birfucation of quite good animation mixed in with some jank. The flourishes after his moves are animated quite beautifully, for instance, but then his LK (which you will see a lot of) looks weird as heck.
It’s not that Cody looks like he was done by the B-team - it’s that the A-team decided to put their time/expense into character idiosyncrasies that, while cool, probably won’t be seen in tournament hardly ever. They’re a nice touch, but I think it’s more important that the things we’ll see a ton in actual matches look better if you have to incur a trade off.
He isn’t a game reviewer though. He is an animation major who points out the issues with the NRS animations as well as putting in his personal point of view. And there’s nothing wrong with that, it’s his channel, it’s his videos, he can do whatever he wants.
I picked up 30th Anniversary and played quite a bit online with my brother. It’s okay. Set the delay to 1. It’s definitely not like playing offline, which I imagine would really bother players who are more skilled than me at the game. We played mostly 3rd strike which is definitely a notch below the excellent @IronGalaxy version from 360/PS3 in both and online performance and overall polish. I don’t know how it is that the sound in that game is so much better but it’s like they put the dial on “weaksauce” for Anniversary edition.
Looking forward to more time with the Alpha games.
My biggest complaint is how bad the character select icons look. They are basically minecraft pixelated versions and i know the arcade did not look that pixelated.
I had more fun this 2nd go around though… speaking of SF…the switch FInal challengers is far superior to this 30th Aniv SF2
Bad animations look awkward and distract from the immersion of the gameplay. It’s like looking at several bad frames in anime, it just takes you out of it.
This hurts in my heart.
Capcom could definitely do better. Re-using assets like this is just not alright. It’s lazy, it’s boring, it makes them look like they are unable to make anything original. Just copy/pasting moves like this… it’s just not okay.
Meh. Not the first time someone’s reused an animation in a fighting game, and certainly won’t be the last. I didn’t roar about Omen and I won’t ■■■■■ about Cody. If the animation itself is ugly I’m all for calling it out - repurposing is whatever so long as it’s appropriate and looks ok. Cody has enough unique stuff to him that I consider that pretty small bones. -shrug-
That LK still ugly as heck though
Every game has reused assets here and there, the good ones are the ones who are cleverly disguised
In terms of animations, what does have Spinal and Aganos have in common? I’m sure about most of you never notincing that both their regular grabs force their opponent into the same animation.
And it’s irrelevant, both throws feel good to watch and land.
It’s ok to recycle some moves IF each character still has an unique flavour
If its not your “cup of tea” then maybe try a different character or game?
Doesnt bother me in the slightest. A kick is a kick… I mean how many different ways can you do a fierce kick? 24 different kicks could lead intothe realm of strange animations.
