Samurai Shodown 2019 - GG Baiken released

I read a few questions and honestly I have to go into practice mode to remember what each character is like.

A quick remark though…

Wu Ruixiang and Tam Tam are probably zoners but not from full screen.
Wu Ruixiang has limited range on her normals and has to set traps to control space. However, her most damaging attacks including her disarm attack have plenty of range.
In addition, some of her specials push the opponent far back to create some distance. This will allow again with setting up traps from afar.
[EDIT]the second match shows this a bit better than the first match in this clip:

The fact that her strong normals have little range means that after you have trapped your opponent, you still need meter to finish off the opponent from a distance or get in close enough for the HS hard slash, follow up combo. Many traps allow her to close distance for a combo and then move away again.

Tam Tam is very similar in concept. Not totally fullscreen but you can sit from a distance and poke with relatively fast long range normals, projectiles and traps to box your opponent in. He has one of the best jump back normals, so he can easily create some distance if needed. His other projectile creates a pillar after it hits the ground - it moves vertically down- and then creates a pillar of fire. So, your opponent cannot jump towards you. Rarely do you have to switch sides as TamTam. He is like a wall that is closing in.

To Andy’s point, the current roster has no grapplers but grappling or command grabs support certain characters’ gameplan.

I have to look again to see what archetypes exist but need some time to lab.

There’s one more potential candidate for a Grappler, and it is Wan-Fu. The last character on the season pass.

He’s originally not a Grappler though, lol. They could still make him one

He looks awesome. Glad he has the pillar and not the sword.

I can confirm that if your opponent hits you with the first hit of a mult-hit attack, you can recover by just defense (just guarding) the subsequent hits.

Despite starting with Kyoshiro, I ended up playing Yashamaru, the bird guy, in online ranked. 67% win percentage and 8-2 in last matches. Still learning like most players. Yashamaru has nice cross ups that I discovered by accident.

Unfortunately, today was not so smooth online. I set settings to all regions and had no lag luckily but as mentioned by others some matches felt like you’re underwater. SNK is aware of this and lobby issues, so hopefully they can get it patched. Too many things are loading and saving during a match, I think it could be a reason.
Still playable though.

Wow, this is huge… I’m going to have to figure this out. It will completely change the way I play.

It happened to me by accident facing a Yoshi.tora against the five hit slash.
I got hit on the first hit, just defended the second two hits but then lost rhythm and got hit by the last two hits.
I have not properly tested this in practice mode but I was able to confirm during an actual match.

Let me know if it works for you.

The only doubt I have is if I actually just-guarded the first hit of his five-hit slash rather than the second hit. Meaning that maybe my opponent threw out two separate moves and I actually got hit by the last hit of the first move and then just guarded the first hit of the second move.

I have to test in practice mode but daughter is on the PS4 now

Okay man. I will try to check this out later

I tested it. Unfortunately my conclusion seems premature. I was able to just guard each hit individually, but not able to recover in time to just guard after being hit. I have been testing on special moves and mult hitting normals. That’s too bad as I was almost excited.
I guess that I was hit by a single hit like LS (?) before the 5-hit slash, but that I recovered fast enough to just defende. Sorry if I dashed any hopes

Another thing I learned now is that when your weapon is deflected (you hit a blocking opponent), you do not have to sit through the entire animation. The last few frames you can cancel into another move like a special move.

This is another element for playing mind games.

No worries. I kind of figured if it was possible it would simply destroy the utility of those moves.

Try these videos to help learn the moves and techniques… i watched both just now and I learned a lot…I just need to apply it to the game itself.

Yashamaru v Genjuro
So far, playing as Yashamaru against Genjuro is the toughest match for me. Genjuro’s range and speed on normals and specials have Yashamaru at a disadvantage from neutral. Arial approach is also not easy. Just went 1-4 against a good Genjuro and was unable to figure out an effective and consistent gameplan.

Next time will get some matches in with Kyoshiro and see how well he fares.

EDIT:
Kyoshiro v Darli
I went against Darli for about 10 matches and got demolished using Kyoshiro. Darli has faster jump and quick strike / broader range with her jumping strikes. The cross up is tough to see and even if you it then anti-airing is unreliable due to Kyoshiro’s upward strike having a strange arc. Currently anti-air has been a problem with Kyoshiro.
The following does not help

and in case you did not know but full rage meter gives access to more powerful version of a move or even less negative/plus frames for guaranteed follow up. Using up rage meter for a powerful finisher or enhance your current moves for a longer battle is the strategy here…

more matches…annoying commentary at times.

I was aware that a full rage meter enhances your specials. Hanzo’s dragon fire projectile gets multiple hits and you can actually combo something out if it - although it doesn’t do all that much damage.

They really REALLY need to fix this games online. It runs so slowly and the game is slow to begin with. It just makes it painful.

I was playing (agonizingly slowly) with my brother some yesterday. Charlotte is pretty easy to use. Lots of good pokes with good range. Nakaruru is a struggle for me. Her best move seems to be ducking middle slash (multi hit roll). Not because of the multi hit - the damage is not special- but because it’s fast and not super unsafe on block. I’m clearly just not getting her gameplan.

samSho and combos

Yes, I hope they improve it soon.
Otherwise it is hit and miss. My ranked matches were okay, a bit hit and miss. First few felt like being underwater again the final ten or so, were without issues.

I ended up creating a lobby with four people and we went on for three hours. I guess we didn’t stop because of the lag-free matches which are hard to come by

JUst my luck I always pick "the worst character in the game " lol
IM just drawn to the underdog characters I guess.
