Now I feel out of place because I watched The Grudge and The Ring series in their entirety, both American and Japanese, and laughed my a$$ off
I’m sorry, I can’t take them seriously.
I mean, look at this

That’s not scary, it’s ADORABLE! She crawled into your bed looking for cuddles! <3
I went in expecting nightmares and walked away with a crush. When I look at any of the “spooky ghost girls” (Kayako, Sadako, Alma, Hisako) I don’t see a frightening figure. Me and my girlfriend both walked away with a list of “spoopy bo0ty” pick up lines from these flicks.
I’d buy an onyro plushy if I knew where to get it.
Same with Jurassic Park. When I saw the raptors, both in the originals and in Jurassic World, I didn’t want to run from them. I wanted to pet them and give them biscuits.
Perspective is a funny thing, isn’t it?
It’s the same perspective as to why, despite all it’s attempts at seriousness, I can’t take KI super seriously.
Maybe that’s because I’m the kind that tends to laugh when I get a power up of some sort in a game, or when something awesome happens in a film.
I’ll admit, my first concern about Rash wasn’t “oh no, this is going to ruin the tone of the game” or “ugh, he’s so cartoony and the rest of the game is so realistic”. It wasn’t even the thoughts I had later, which were along the lines of “holy ■■■■ did he just turn into a Wrecking Ball? HA!”
My immediate thought when I heard the announcement? “…people are going to be pretty salty about this.”
I wasn’t even particularly keen on him to begin with, since I have zero previous connection to Battletoads as a series. But seeing him in game, even if he seems like an odd fit with a bit of marketing behind him, it’s obvious that he’s not JUST some sort of cheap publicity stunt. They’ve put a lot of effort towards the character. Unique animations and style add a nice balance to the other characters.
The very reason you and a few others seem so miffed by his inclusion are the very reason why I think he works really well. He’s something different. He has a style that none of the other characters in game match. In a game that prides itself in its variety of characters and play styles, he adds a MASSIVE boost to the game’s diversity. I’ve always felt KI wasn’t a game of “Why?”, it was a game of “Why not?”
When I first picked up KI, some of the characters that fit the game nicely were hugely unimpressive for me.
Jago: “Oh look, a ninja with crazy hair who throws fireballs and has a sword and worships a tiger spirit. What’s your archetype, ‘fighting character’?”
Orchid:“Oh hello, discount sexy Sonya Blade.”
Thunder:" OK, a native dude with tomahawks, a little bit better, but still pretty easy."
TJ:“…Really? ‘Dude who punches stuff?’ Wow.”
Now that I’ve actually played them, I can see that they have cool lore behind them, but at first glance, they looked like they were pretty at odds with characters like Sabrewulf, Riptor, Fulgore, Glacius, and Spinal. If it were just characters like that, the game would’ve been a Monster Brawler of sorts and I would’ve been MORE than impressed. The human characters took me some getting used to, since I was still pretty thoroughly convinced they were just…well, dudes. Why would I play a dude that I could play in any other type of game, when I could be a dinosaur? or a werewolf? or an alien? From that perspective, for the longest time, I would’ve been happier to see Rash than someone like Jago.
Perspective is an important thing to consider, sir/ma’am.
I say that Rash is a pretty ok fit in the game, since he breaks from the norm. His outlandishness may seem off-putting to you, but as long as Rash is the oddball among the cast, I think he fits that role better than most characters could’ve.
He’ll be our Link from SC2, our Boxart Megaman from SF vs Tekken, Ice Cream Cone Sagat…
From where I’m sitting, he’s a character that manages to be unique enough to stand out even among the already insanely diverse cast of KI.
And with all the “Whens Battletoads?” threads on the old boards, I have a feeling that I’m not the only one who thinks so.
Just my thoughts on the matter.
