RASH is gone so what do we think? REVIEW

I’m sorry. I can’t let it stand that Rash’s wrecking ball is cartoonish and Orchids Firecat is “science fiction.” Nonsense. Listen to yourselves: “Orchid is engulfed in her laseken power.” But “what powers does a toad have to turn into an actual wrecking ball?” I don’t know, maybe he’s using “laseken power.” Since that’s just some nonsense Rareade up to have a hot girl turn into a glowy Panther and run across a rooftop back in 94. Who’s to say laseken power can’t turn toads into wrecking balls.

Look, you guys don’t have to like Rash. You don’t have to want him in the game. But you can’t claim that KI plays it straight and is now ruined by the inclusion of something silly like Rash. If Rash ruins KI for you then I would suggest you are taking the skeleton/dinosaur/werewolf/robot (now with two robots!) battle a touch too seriously.

What’s funny my friend, is this:

I’m indifferent to Rash being in the game. I wasn’t a huge Battletoads fan back in the day. I’m just trying to speak objectively about the motif, not really jockeying for one side or the other.

But perhaps I should take my age into consideration… I grew up with parents exposing me to things like Frank Zappa, George Carlin, Mont Python, and other things which tow the line between dead serious and totally silly. So I don’t mind a little jocularity in my anger. I don’t expect everyone else will feel the same… but I was simply making the point that, to me, Rash isn’t the only silly thing in the game.

And I don’t mind silly.

No… just NO! Lol

Some of us are sensitive enough to see the difference from cartoon and adult scifi.

If you arnt that your thing but we will try to show you how lol.

Orchids powers can be explained though her science her powrs her sabers. Shes not jokey in this ki and shes not silly. Her hits dont make comic book effects and they are in keeping with KI3 more real life fiction.

Rash is not in keeping with this KI and that why people dislike him. Most people were angry that cinder was dead pool esk… but this… this is somthing else lol

Comedy is kept to a minimum in Ki3 and rash ramps it up a whole loads and takes it too an uncomfortable place for some. Fine if you ok with it. Good for you but its as clear as day that he bring somthing new in terms of style and design.

He IS differnt from the cast and it is in a cartoon way. Graphics, animations, sounds and effects show it clear as day like no other in the game.

If you cant see the difference from terminator Scifi and Loony toons then we will never agree.

And yes KIs scifi fit in with traditional horror films, jarrasic park, kung fu, urban ledgends, terminator scifi etc and they are mostly if not all aimed at a more adult market that doesnt include looney toons or any animated fogs lol.

Was terminator silly?
Was the ring silly?
Was jarrasic park silly?
Were the old 80s weare wolf films silly?
Was lord of the rings silly?

Nope because they were all done with an adult or more adult edge and audience in mind.

Its easy to call everything fictional silly, unrealistic and un believable but the point is battle toads dont belong in terminator because they dont fit with its general feel. Would universal say “we added a battle toad to the next jarrasic park film because scientists have used prestoric toad and human dna together just like they did with the dinoasurs to make a new breed of fighting toad!”

Lol you could give ypur argument arguably for everything. It still doesnt make it fit any better.

Would we watch the ring and JUST simply because its not real belive that battles toads fit? No becuse the styles dont fit together.

Again regardless if you can’t see that fine but id be just as unhappy if they made a film about any of the above listed and added a battle toad.

Marbel i agree.

I dont mind rash or silly things either. I understand exactly what you say in terms of childhood influences and i respect it. But i wont be told that rash isnt differnt or a new direction from what we have had.

He is. Hes different in almost every way. Is it ok? Sure its “ok” sure i can understand it how you explained it.

But this thread was started to capture everyones thoughts and personal feelings on rash

The question is do i want that in ki and do I think that fits? There is where everyone’s review counts

Everything is personal but we must all try to understand each other.

Now I feel out of place because I watched The Grudge and The Ring series in their entirety, both American and Japanese, and laughed my a$$ off
I’m sorry, I can’t take them seriously.
I mean, look at this

That’s not scary, it’s ADORABLE! She crawled into your bed looking for cuddles! <3
I went in expecting nightmares and walked away with a crush. When I look at any of the “spooky ghost girls” (Kayako, Sadako, Alma, Hisako) I don’t see a frightening figure. Me and my girlfriend both walked away with a list of “spoopy bo0ty” pick up lines from these flicks.
I’d buy an onyro plushy if I knew where to get it.
Same with Jurassic Park. When I saw the raptors, both in the originals and in Jurassic World, I didn’t want to run from them. I wanted to pet them and give them biscuits.

Perspective is a funny thing, isn’t it?
It’s the same perspective as to why, despite all it’s attempts at seriousness, I can’t take KI super seriously.
Maybe that’s because I’m the kind that tends to laugh when I get a power up of some sort in a game, or when something awesome happens in a film.
I’ll admit, my first concern about Rash wasn’t “oh no, this is going to ruin the tone of the game” or “ugh, he’s so cartoony and the rest of the game is so realistic”. It wasn’t even the thoughts I had later, which were along the lines of “holy ■■■■ did he just turn into a Wrecking Ball? HA!”
My immediate thought when I heard the announcement? “…people are going to be pretty salty about this.”
I wasn’t even particularly keen on him to begin with, since I have zero previous connection to Battletoads as a series. But seeing him in game, even if he seems like an odd fit with a bit of marketing behind him, it’s obvious that he’s not JUST some sort of cheap publicity stunt. They’ve put a lot of effort towards the character. Unique animations and style add a nice balance to the other characters.
The very reason you and a few others seem so miffed by his inclusion are the very reason why I think he works really well. He’s something different. He has a style that none of the other characters in game match. In a game that prides itself in its variety of characters and play styles, he adds a MASSIVE boost to the game’s diversity. I’ve always felt KI wasn’t a game of “Why?”, it was a game of “Why not?”
When I first picked up KI, some of the characters that fit the game nicely were hugely unimpressive for me.
Jago: “Oh look, a ninja with crazy hair who throws fireballs and has a sword and worships a tiger spirit. What’s your archetype, ‘fighting character’?”
Orchid:“Oh hello, discount sexy Sonya Blade.”
Thunder:" OK, a native dude with tomahawks, a little bit better, but still pretty easy."
TJ:“…Really? ‘Dude who punches stuff?’ Wow.”
Now that I’ve actually played them, I can see that they have cool lore behind them, but at first glance, they looked like they were pretty at odds with characters like Sabrewulf, Riptor, Fulgore, Glacius, and Spinal. If it were just characters like that, the game would’ve been a Monster Brawler of sorts and I would’ve been MORE than impressed. The human characters took me some getting used to, since I was still pretty thoroughly convinced they were just…well, dudes. Why would I play a dude that I could play in any other type of game, when I could be a dinosaur? or a werewolf? or an alien? From that perspective, for the longest time, I would’ve been happier to see Rash than someone like Jago.

Perspective is an important thing to consider, sir/ma’am.
I say that Rash is a pretty ok fit in the game, since he breaks from the norm. His outlandishness may seem off-putting to you, but as long as Rash is the oddball among the cast, I think he fits that role better than most characters could’ve.
He’ll be our Link from SC2, our Boxart Megaman from SF vs Tekken, Ice Cream Cone Sagat…
From where I’m sitting, he’s a character that manages to be unique enough to stand out even among the already insanely diverse cast of KI.
And with all the “Whens Battletoads?” threads on the old boards, I have a feeling that I’m not the only one who thinks so.
Just my thoughts on the matter. :stuck_out_tongue:

“Science” is not just an explanation for whatever “future magic” you would like to invoke. I’m not sure you can say it’s all crazy and goofy for a toad to morph into a wrecking ball but super mature for a girl to morph into a cat.

Monty Python was done with an adult audience in mind too.

The difference is you think Orchid is cool and Rash isn’t. Which is fine, but stop pretending that there is some complex underlying logic to your opinion.

I see the difference. But the difference isn’t that Looney Toons is goofy and Terminator is meant to be taken seriously…

Im very curious about Rash’s new look. I’ve heard about the current Rash being his retro rendering.
And the deadly match Gargos x Eyedol its a must have for season 3. If you don’t like Eyedol its ok for you. You don’t need to use him. Fight him w/ Gargos or some of your faves cus we can’t let it pass Gargos and Eyedol at KI season 3.

Sure it is. Every time MS/DH/IG has shown the first character of a season, the community has “split” and erupted into a fit of rage and angst. Before it came out “Jago’s stupid hair” and his steroids were very regular knocks against the game and its style and prompted endless posts about MS cheaping out and farming out a fantastic IP to a bunch of hacks who made mediocre movie tie-in games. In S2 everyone whined about how TJ was bland (not true) and looked like Patrick Ewing (kinda true), and how he was so skinny and IG were ruining everything and yet again the community was rent in a torrent of angst and forum complaints. Now we’ve got Rash and all this accompanying angst. It’s perfectly keeping in form for the series :smirk:

No “we” didn’t. I rather liked KI2’s story. We got Kim Wu (awesome), badass Wulf with metal arms, eyepatch TJ who put down Riptor, and the brother/sister duo of Jago and Orchid. It’s fine if you didn’t like it, but it’s bad form to simply project that onto others.

And yes - Rash is something of a marketing ploy. It’s ok. Many games have marketing ploys - it doesn’t make MS the evil empire to have one in KI. The real question is whether the marketing ploy is show-horned in in a poor manner that demonstrably hurts the game. I’d argue that Rash is actually a surprisingly solid character. He’s unique, well animated, and fits an interesting gameplay niche. That’s more than can be said for a lot of games’ main characters.

Doesn’t Spinal also hit you with giant cartoon fists that literally come out of nowhere?

No, no he doesn’t. At least not int he same manner that Rash’s hands, leg/feet and body swell up out of nowhere.

Spinal’s spectral arm/hands are realistic in their proportions.

LOL u lot make me laugh.

Bellow is a huge generalisation of what everyone is saying;

  1. So KI time travel is now ok. Even if it was slated on the old forums big time by the community and by IG / DH / MS.

  2. KI is now monte python in style. We accept now at the start of season 3 that ki is monte python and that all along it was being silly and comical but we cant quite place where other than a handful of extra content and maybe one or two small animations lol.

  3. we see there is no difference from rash and eveyone else. Even though effects sounds and animations are vastly different from everyone else, voice moves, effects, instinct, look to name a few. Regarless if spinal used a magical projection his effects and sound effects are in keeping with this game.

  4. its now fine to be more like K1 even tough we have had two whole seasons based on a certian look and theme. This reboot isnt at all a reboot its actually more like KI1 than we realised. So why were we (in general) complaining it wasnt KI1 enough.

  5. we now take no films or fiction seriously because they are simply fiction and we cannont see the difference in artistic style and themes. We acspet if its fiction then its fine to add toads becuse its not real. We also aspect that if there is any (even if its minor) humour in a game it can be taken as the core feel of the game and or film and expanded on to any lengths.

  6. we are more than happy to have a marketing ploy take a valuable space in season 3 even thought we have to foot the bill for prize pools and shadow jago.

  7. we have determined that we will never like any season launch trailers players becuse we actually just like to moan lol. There for there is no difference from Jago Tj or Rash in terms of style or artistic direction.

  8. we are happy to accept rash as an OK entry to season 3 even though his average here is pretty low and his reviews have been pretty mixed. Ok is now the bench mark for season 3 as long and it comes with diversity. Our 1st reveal of season 3 is usually defended with the worlds, ok, pretty good and hes fine lol.

The point is we all have views and MY thred here is to express how you feel even if its negertive lol.

read my review i gave him a 5 hes ok. I enjoy playing him but i have no burning desire to play more with him or to do better with him. Hes perfect for battle toads but hes not even my 10th choice for KI even thougj hes done incredibly well.

Rash as it stands is a clear 6-7 its pretty solid but no matter what we discuss its still pretty split across here face book and twitter the community’s forst reaction was WTF lol.

We dont have to agree or understand why we think he fits in or not we are all different here.

Disagreeing is not a bad thing its good in terms of feed back

A few things:
1)Straw man arguments ain’t cool. Saying things like “apparently we see no difference” and “we take nothing seriously” do nothing to help your point and sound more like attempts at personal jabs than objective arguments. No need to put words in other people’s mouths. We’ve offered counter points to your arguments from our own perspectives, no need to jump to conclusions.

2)If disagreement “isn’t bad” as you put it, then shouldn’t it be ok for us to disagree with you? Developers aren’t the only ones who’s statements are under community scrutiny, after all. People among the community will share opinions and disagree on a multitude of issues.

3)If the thread was made to express how we feel, isn’t it alright to have a positive opinion once in a while? Feedback comes in all shapes and sizes. No particular opinion of the character is more important than the other.

Food for thought, yeah?

Oh silly you. Statements of fact are unwelcome here. It’s different you see, because Spinal’s cartoon arms are skeletons and skeletons are badass. I drew a whole bunch right here in my notebook in the hopes they might someday appear on a heavy metal album cover. Seriousness confirmed. And besides, how could you say they were cartoony when Spinal follows up with his crypt keeper laugh? C’mon dude. Some things are dead serious and shouldn’t be made light of.

Plus, apparently they are proportional. Which I guess makes them more serious too.

Everybody has their own arbitrary imaginary line on what’s too cheesy or goofy. For some people Spinal and Rash are equally cartoony and for others Rash is unnacceptable while Spinal may be just okay.

I can appreciate that Rash’s tone is lighter than others. For some, he crosses an imaginary line, for others he does not.

Let’s say he indeed crosses a line for me, it simply does not bother me, as long as he’s an exception.

I can accept his less serious design, but I also acknowledge he has a different tone than the other characters. It all depends on how much he deviates from your imaginary perfect Killer Instinct game and your personal concept of what KI is.

  1. evedently i dont care what you think is cool or not lol

I said on my post that i was making a HUGE generalisation and in turn i was playing devils advocate. You should know that from your ability to get monte python so well that not everything here is written so seriously.:stuck_out_tongue:

Lighten up relax and dont give a F#@k. I dont. What anyone else thinks of me or my thoughts is their business not mine. Im here to speak about what i feel not what might upset your apple cart or what u might feel is negertive.

  1. yes i have generalised in a light heart way, yes its provocative but thats what forums are. Does it upset me that some people disagree? Not at all. I read all this with a smile on my face. Everyone here loves the same thing as i do we just argue on the 0.5 of a detail i actually find that halarious. You might take it to heart but i dont. Please take my comments with a pinch of salt.

  2. i live in the free world. Anyone who knows me on here knows me as a hugely positive person specially regarding KI. But if you cant take the good from my review and comments then its you who is stuck on negetivity and u need to shake it out.

Not once have i slated Rash but i wont explain if you arnt reading my comments. I think my comments are fair.

The discussion at the moment is do we feel he fits? Thats what has split this comunity down the middle regardless of what we think of him.

Ita our perceptions of KI no one is right or wrong bit i will provoke and prod anyones argument. Its good for posts

You dont need to read me. I know me 100% you just need to know that whats cool with you has absolutely no baring on my opinions dont take what i say so serious.

AMEN

Me too.

Do i like rash: yes hes done very well for a batle toad
Do i have fun playing rash: yes he has fun gameplay
Would i want more like him: No
Would he be my first choice: No
Do i think he stands out: Yes
Can i tolerate him: Yes
Is he as good as the previous cast: No
Will i main him: no
Will i go though his story first: No

Thats me in a nut shell

That’s a nice collection of straw men you got there…be a shame if something happened to them

But if that’s all you got from reading others’ posts, then there’s not really much point in having a discussion. The funny thing is I’m actually not a huge fan of the character, and don’t have any intention of playing him. But I don’t play most of the cast, and I fail to see how his inclusion is somehow this massive betrayal to the game and its “spirit.”

But whatever. I learned that “slate” is apparently a British term for “severe criticism”, so at least it hasn’t been a total waste. :+1:

What facts?

Ghostly hands coming out of the ground is akin to Jago or Ryu shooting a fireball. It’s all fantasy.

Rash can also be considered fantasy; however, his look and moveset will could also be right at home in a goofy Bugs Bunny cartoon with little change needed.

You can’t say the same about the other characters in the game because, despite KI3 being all fantasy and sci-fi, there is a high degree of realism with the way everything looks, moves and fights.

Design wise, Rash has a lot more in common with Bugs Bunny, Taz-Mania and Animaniacs than he does Jago or Spinal.

How is this even a topic of debate?

I agree 100%…this is how I feel as well. I just wish they would drop the entire “guest character” idea either all together or bring those characters out AFTER the release of the original characters, new and old.

Guest should come afterwards, that way no one is making assumptions on the direction of the game based off the guest characters.
I feel this is the safest option IMO

LOL u learnt mr strom to take that stick outa ur ■■■ lol. Yes slate is a real world lol its English we all speak the Queens language regardless or straw men or whatever.

I care. 18 years wait for this game means that every reveal for me needs to be on point. Its Massively selfish to expect to Love everything rather than just liking it.

I understand you main and that nothing else matters other than one or two characters ; ) but some of us do play the whole cast.

No its not a betrayal mr drama but it is for many of us a waste of development time and some of that development time weve funed.
