Project Scorpio

But there are SO. MANY. FLOPS. :open_mouth:

Yeah in all seriousness, I’m not sure if Sony could even do anything, but it makes me wonder. If they think there’s a chance that they’ll be the weaker console out of the gate, and we’re still a year and a half away from Scorpio’s launch, would they consider holding back the Neo a bit to give it some more juice?

Personally, I never bought in to the power thing before. PS2 wasn’t the most powerful system of it’s generation and it won handily. PS3 was the most powerful of it’s generation and it lost. I don’t know why, but it seems as though power is a huge issue this generation. I know it was before, but it feels like it’s almost a rallying cry for Sony fans this time around, more so than ever before.

I’ll be curious to see which one ends up being more powerful and which one costs more. I have a feeling MS will be announcing their price first and Sony will try to counter them, just as they did earlier in this generation, seemingly as a counter to last generation.

Well sony released the specs for the Neo first (though privately and they leaked) and so far it’s about half as powerful at the Scorpio. They could go back and make it stronger but my guess is they’ve already invested too much time and money to simply say “hey, let’s make it twice as powerful as it currently is!”

I did a bit of research after I had heard that…because honestly I have no idea what a flop is…and aside from essentially being a technobabbly buzz word (akin to the no of bits in a NES/SNES/Genesis) that describes how fast a computer can make calculations…I did see that the most advance supercomputer in the 90’s could only pull about 1 teralfop.

So yay for the Scorpio???

It’s tough to know why we are so obsessed with power this generation. But I suspect most of it has to do with how easily comparable the results are. 30fps vs 60. 900p vs 1080. Both systems are plenty powerful but not compared to high end PCs, and X One launched too expensive because of Kinect - which I long defended but turns out to be an albatross.

I love power as much as any other red blooded American. But I really think we are moving beyond that. So many people are playing on iOS and Pokemon games in 3Ds which is just not a powerhouse. I really think MS is on to something with the Play Anywhere concept. We’ll see how far they can go with it.

Sony’s plans aside (which I don’t really care about at this point anyways), I’m just curious about whether the numbers MS stated during its reveal will still even be relevant in a year and a half - tech moves fast, and is moving more quickly by the day. Will it potentially be behind by then, or will those numbers possibly change? Will 4K become more common by then? There’s a whole lot of speculation to be had at this point, because quite frankly, nobody truly knows what the future really holds. Armageddon could even happen between now and then for all we truly know.

So after heavy consideration and speculation, I will say that Project Scorpio was a mistake.

Not in the sense of what it is but more so of the timing. Xbox already announced the S and in their way of competition wanted to blow out PS by showing their guns.

This is good in thought but works against you in time.

Here’s why.

  1. By announcing an all around better console, many people who have yet to upgrade or don’t have an Xbox will have no need to purchase an S, impacting sales.

  2. Sony has the specs to counter the design of Scorpio based on what they know and potentially overhaul their system since they have no official date unlike Scorpio.

  3. Way too early, the console has another full year until release and by to mention it could have very well been announced during E3 of 2017.

Overall, the idea was to really end with a bang, but because of MS poor track record, I feel as if this can hurt them in the long run. For anyone who were early adopters of the Kinect featuring Milo, you understand.

They will, because Sony once planned on digital games only similar to Xbox. But, because of Xbox’s poor reviews and vocal majority, they went back and announced things they knew weren’t in their consoles yet.

I think MS knows what they are doing., They have 100’s of people working on this stuff everyday, they are pros at it. I’m not sure what you do for work, but imagine someone from MS telling you what mistakes you made and how to do your job.

I get your opinion, but lets think realistically here… I think they know how to handle their business and if they were worried about Sony, they wouldn’t have mentioned it. They are proud of what they have built and I dont think Sony can compete with MS on a hardware level.

MS is going to make their product and its gonna be awesome…and Sony will do the same and it will be awesome. There is room for both of them.

I thought the same thing, but we don’t even know if both consoles will cater to same purchasing group. The X1S starts at $299, which is okay for the average person. The Scorpio with all the things they’re touting, does not seem like it will be less than $400, and that’s being very optimistic about it.
As for Sony, sure it does give them time to upgrade their system but I don’t think MS ignored that possibility when announcing this.
There’s more than one way to look at the early info about PSc. You say way too early, I say capturing and retaining more attention first.

Not only their sales, though. I feel like there may be a lot more apprehension to buying any console until we get more details on the Scorpio, so its kind of a win.

As a consumer my feedback is critical towards the success of their company, not alone sure but together, yes. I won’t let myself become so blinded by my years with Xbox to neglect what can be criticized. Had no one spoken out about the whole DRM debacle then we would be playing on an overpriced brick that forced the user to be connected online 24/7, we spoke out and it changed. I’m not saying it is a failure by any means, just saying that it was too early is all.

I’m a Student Support Assistant, I assist college students in multiple areas so that they may remained focused and complete the entirety of their degree/certificate.

Final note, yes there are room for both of them. I own three consoles and a PC and look out for the best of a company because that is their premise, to make the consumer happy. Just speaking in terms of strategy towards sales to bring themselves back onto playing field against Sony, which they have been. Which means to be critical often and inform others. I also am not the only one who feels this way as people in the industry like the President and Chief Operating Officer of Nintendo of America Reggie Fils-Aimé, Gaming Activist Boogie2988 and so on have similar points.

So you say it may not be less than $400 and I agree, I believe $500 or more. Which means for those who wanted to purchase and Xbox but didn’t like the size, price, power supply, etc. have an opportunity with the S. However, because the Scorpio came out a good amount of people will rather wait it out if it will be the most powerful console, lets say they don’t like it then they will just be turned off and choose to not invest anymore. That is the reality of it but again that is speculating a year from now.

We will see come next year, too early to say on either end. Just my two cents.

It’s not so much “trust MS, they are smarter than you.” It’s more along the lines of “MS will succeed or fail based on a whole bunch of stuff you can’t see and know nothing about.” I think a lot of the uproar around the X1 launch and the success of the protests against MS’s policies is overblown. I wouldn’t recommend trying to use X1 or PS4 without an Internet connection. Can you do it? Sometimes. But every game requires a day one update, nothing runs off the disc and 90% of games have an integrated online feature of one form or another. But hey, everyone, enjoy selling discs back to gamestop for 10% of what you paid so they can sell them for 10% less than the price of new… Sorry, off topic rant.

As far as Scorpio, 18 months is not that much time. If they announced at E3 next year it would be “wait what?!?! It’s a new console coming when?!?!?” There’s no “good time” to disrupt the hardware cycle and release a more powerful console. i think part of the reasoning has to do with letting people get comfortable with the idea before releasing more details.

As far as cannibalizing X1S sales, you can’t be afraid to compete with yourself. If you don’t someone else will.

Dropping it after a few years is natural progression.

I think they will give 2 setting options for a game. 1080P/60FPS and 4K/… Eventually they will create Games for Scorpio that no longer work on One and S. This is natural progression. Personally i think the Scorpio Project is a good move and have the feeling this will turn out very well for Microsoft. Most people that play on a Console will always play on a Console and having a Console that’s on PC level is awesome for those people. Personally i prefer a Console because it’s more easy and comfortable which makes the experience more enjoyable. It is also more affordable then a PC. But even if the Scorpio is more expensive then other Console’s i will still buy it. And they can still improve the hardware because they have not given all the specs… Don’t worry , i have a feeling it will be awesome and turn out well.

Next year is going to be completely bonkers.
Early this year a lot of excitement was building up for the NX.
Then we learned NX won’t ship this year and thus Nintendo would not be in the lead hardwarewise and & lot of excitement was killed.

And now when Scorpio & Neo is on the way… Man, Nintendos uphillclimb just got steeper.
We still know next to nothing about the system either. & the fact that Ubisoft so far only support that system with their dancegame seems a bit worrying as they won’t ship their AAA-titles to NX. (afaik)

What I’m trying to understand is whether or not this means I’ll ahve to buy it or just buy the game ssicne they are compatible with Xbox One (If that is true) Becaus eI’m very curious but alo concerned
