Odd you didn’t make this comment about the Shaggy memes. We don’t “need” to “focus” on the February 5th reveal. We are talking about characters in MK. It’s on topic. Fortunately you’re not the lord of the thread. “This thread is about MK 11, not the February 5th reveal. Make a new thread and keep it there.”
i am a child when it comes to games
That’s fine.
The Reddit thread about it has a lot of posts saying they have almost frostbite-inducing weather so I guess its pretty bad in some places. Tyler himself responded that people coming in from suburbs will have trouble getting to work so rather than risk it, they prefer postponing the stream. Obviously the logical choice.
The dev team is not obligated to communicate with the fans, and certainly not every day. That is a job, full time, deciding schedules on exactly what to release and when, what’s ready to show versus what’s not quite ready, and doing quality assurance and verification of all of it while ensuring they don’t reveal everything there is to find in the game. That would frankly be a tremendous waste of time that people could better spend actually improving the game and readying it for ship.
The kombat kast was canceled because NRS doesn’t want people endangering themselves to feed morsels of information to the community. It both sucks and is also 100% the correct decision. I look forward to catching the VOD on the 6th.
Something to perhaps keep in mind Thought is that while art imitates life*, artists’ lives and experiences are necessarily limited, and subsequently their art is limited. People are shaped by what their life experiences contain, and by extension by what they don’t contain.
I’m an Army brat, so I grew up moving every couple of years. At this point I’ve lived in ten different states and three different countries; my life experiences are pretty broad by most standards. I say all that to say that for all the moving I did and the many, many people I met along the way, I never actually met a trans person until I got involved with the FGC two or three years ago.
It’s hard to make an accurate and fair portrayal of a group that you haven’t really encountered before. Now it’s entirely possible that the design team at NRS totally knows a bunch of trans individuals, but it’s also possible that their experiences as a group more closely resemble mine. That adds not only to the challenge of doing such a character well, but (perhaps more importantly here) to even having the idea that this is something they should look at doing. They get thousands of requests for all kinds of characters - I imagine it’s easy for a suggestion (any suggestion) to get lost in the shuffle. Especially so if they are genuinely unsure of how to do a character properly.
You asked earlier in the thread why people take a minority character to be representative of everyone in that subgroup. To some extent it’s because people often genuinely don’t have enough real experience with individuals of that group to have an actual opinion of them as human beings. I’ve lived in a lot of places where I was the only black guy people knew outside of TV, and whether I liked it or not that meant I was the avatar of all black culture and opinion to those folks.
Thunder and Eagle (moreso Thunder) are all most people will ever find out about the Nez Perce people and culture. A people that once spanned Washington, Oregon, Montana, and Idaho, distilled into two characters whose only in-game characterizations are the language they speak and their weapons and clothes. Microsoft and the KI team deserve real credit for being as authentic as they could be, but that effort came from somewhere. It was something that someone thought and felt passionately about, and that’s why it turned out so good.
Maybe there’s someone at NRS who feels that way about including a trans character. But if there isn’t, and they genuinely can’t think of a way to do such a character right, it’s very possible that they simply pass on the idea. Not out of malice, but simply because it’s not something their life experiences have shown them how to do well.
*Oscar Wilde takes exception to this.
Hopefully someone thinks that it’s worth the extra effort and research then.
At the end of the day, I won’t be upset if there isn’t one. It is certainly not a requirement that they do this. I just know a lot of people who really would appreciate the gesture and feel more included because of it. Heck, it’s the same reason I spam requests for Poison at every Capcom Fighter under the sun.
I just hope that they think it would be worth it you know. This whole conversation started because I was worried that there would be backlash from both sides. The idea that it’s perpetuating violence against transgender people vs the people who think they’re just “pandering to the agenda” or whatever combination of buzzwords people use without actual knowing what they mean. Who knows what would actually happen, but I guess constantly worrying about what could go wrong isn’t very productive in life. So I move on. My hopes in tact. Ready to continue on another day.
just let the art flow and the creators work organically, come what may. its going to be a great game and everyone is going to have fun, which is the entire point of playing videogames. theyre meant to escape reality for a while, kick back and relax after a stressful day, or to have some fun after you killed it on the job and everything is workin out.
anyway, i totally understand the stream got cancelled. its like -60 in chicago or some ■■■■ aint it? can you imagine that? i almost died at 12F lol and im used to 115f temps. omg, that is horrifying lol. so yeah, let them stay home i wouldnt wanna go out in that ■■■■ or into a major storm. hell with that
I have a coworker from Chicago with frostbite scars and nerve damage on his hands from going to/from school with heavy winter gloves on. Put another way, the heavy version of Chicago’s Wind Chill is unblockable.
dude, i just read its down to -75. you all are approaching temps seen in vacuum in space or some ■■■■ ■■■■■■■. any ppl stuck outdoors are boned
I heard its colder than Antartica in Chicago right now LOL
Im used to it. My warehouse is usually 30 degrees this time of year and my freezer is -40. We also handle dry ice which is -119 degrees.
Best lotion Ive found for cold hands is “O’Keeffe’s Working Hands Lotion”… it literally works over night, 1 application.
Believe me. I don’t want to hinder the creative process of “force” anything. That’s just going to turn out a bad creative product. But in all likelihood, if I don’t ask for it and try to rally together the people who want it, then it will probably never happen and people like me will remain underrepresented in media. And I’m talking about quality over quantity. I’m not saying there has to be x number of trans characters in pop culture because that’s going to lead to bad characters. But there’s only a handful of “tropes” that they occupy. See what I’m getting at.
Absolute zero is -460 F (-273 C). That’s the point where the molecules stop moving. So they are much warmer than that st least. Sorry, too nerdy
I am completely on board with delaying the Kombat Kast. However they are missing a hell of an opportunity to spam the world with Sub Zero memes…
i was gonna say, these harsh temps are prime grounds for some marketing lmao. it was a smart move to cancel the kombat kast, gotta think about personal safety of their guys and stayin off the roads until this blows over.
pretty good to know how cold vacuum is, ■■■■■ that i think ill stay here lol. here we are in TX bundled up like eskimos when it turns 50F, but what chicago is currently experiencing is unimaginable. i got people telling me they’d rather have it blisteringly hot where you go outside and you’re walking into an oven.
i have no idea how they can like that. its easier to dress up to stay warm and keep your core leveled out, than it is to dress down because then you’re gonna get picked up for indecent exposure lol
But did we land on the moon? I watched First Man the other night, I already had my doubts, but now after this movie and a couple other documentary’s and research…I jsut dont think we could have pulled this off in 1969 in that tin can they call Apollo. And if the vacuum of space is -460… how did they not freeze to death in that aluminum capsule and where was 6 days or more worth of Oxygen stored? We can discuss in PMs if anyone is interested.
90% of the NASA budget went into a heater LOL
Dude I just LOLd and bout spit out my coffee! Good one!
I will PM you. But we absolutely did go to the moon. I feel like @STORM179 might have something to say based on his work history.
I should clarify too that the vacuum of space is not at absolute zero. It also doesn’t transfer heat all that well. Think about the difference between grabbing a metal spoon and a plastic spoon in your freezer room. The metal one is going to kill you but the plastic one is fine. They are both the same temperature but metal is great at transferring heat and plastic is not.
There is no moon landing. The earth is flat.
