YOOOH! ITs been a while, but I absolutley can not wait for RAMBO!!! FN Awesome! Just what this game and world needs…more RAMBO!
So, my brother bought me a Series S to put in my arcade setup. It’s pretty incredible as far as load times. MK11 just updated to a series S/X version and it’s really game changing. Takes a couple of seconds to get in the game. Matches load and start almost instantly. Really a game changer.
Unfortunately it comes with the NRS standard error in reading the DLC…
LOL That’s a cute image. If I remember correctly, Raijin in Japanese mythology was a very different character, a short red demon with a drum. I suppose one could chalk that up as Raiden’s shapeshifting abilities since his human form doesn’t really represent his true form.
“NRS standard error?”
Outside of that, the Xbox Series S, good purchase? You liking it so far? How’s the new D-Pad on the updated Controller?
They have some kind of weird system where your DLC status is stored in the cache and it gets corrupted but refuses to be overwritten. They ask you to do a full shut down to clear the cache and then reinstall the DLC but in this case it doesn’t work. So I am missing all my Kombat Pass content. It’s atrocious and it’s a recurring issue with all their games.
The machine is fantastic, but with a couple
of caveats. I am running this on a 32” 1080p monitor that I have set up for fighting games and for being a secondary gaming station to play multiplayer or when my son is using the Xbox OneX on the big 4K tv. It is upgrading my Day One Xbox One. So for this, it’s an amazing upgrade in every way. Better load times, improved resolution and frame rate on back compatible games (with some exceptions) and it runs X/S upgraded and new games beautifully. Quiet. Fits easily in the arcade cabinet where I store it. Amazing.
The caveat is that there are examples where it is not an upgrade to the XboxOneX on back compat games. Namely when the frame rate and/or resolution are locked by the developer. MH World, for example has a terrible resolution (it’s locked under 900p). While the Series S maxes out the frame rate and keeps it consistent (which is a big QoL improvement) it is visually stuck at <900p resolution. Weirdly though, this is really inconsistent between games. State of Decay 2 runs at 4K 30fps on OneX, but runs beautifully at 1080p 60fps on Series S. So much so that if given the choice I would always choose to play it in the Series S.
Bottom line: as an upgrade to an Xbox One it’s 100% great. At this point though, with mostly back compatible software I would definitely think twice about it as an upgrade to Xbox OneX, especially if you game at 4K. But this is pretty much in line with how the console is advertised.
The controller is better than I expected. If asked I would prefer it to the Xbox One controller. Not a huge change but the grippy texture and the D pad are both great. I play fighting games with a fightstick so I can’t comment on the dpad for use in KI, but it seems like it should work well.
For NetherRealm Studios, that’s crazy weird. The only game from them I own on Xbox One is Mortal Kombat XL, and I have yet to experience that issue personally.
For the Xbox Series S, thanks for the details. Digital Foundry just reviewed it and what they say goes in line with your impressions.
One thing to note is the Xbox Series S will not have any Xbox One X enhancements to a game, you’ll need an Xbox Series X for that. It only plays (and enhances) Xbox One S versions.
For my Xbox One X, I currently use an older 32" LCD TV that’s native 720p but supports (upscales I assume) 1080p. This Black Friday I may spring for an entry level 4K TV; we’ll see.
NRS games all also require you to reset your custom button set up each time you start the game. Every single game they’ve released since MK9 is like this. It’s a joke.
For anyone interested, I put in a ticket with NRS support two days ago and have had no response. I eventually tried not only shutting down the series S completely, but unplugging it and then hitting the power button (which flashed briefly then died for obvious reasons). I let it sit for a good long while (probably half an hour as I got distracted) and when I restarted the system my DLC was finally recognized and available. So a happy ending at least, even if this seems elaborate and unnecessary.
???
I’ve remapped the Controller since Mortal Kombat (2011) in each game, and this has never once occurred to me. You use a stick though? Perhaps it’s something to do with that?
Yeah I don’t know what the deal is with their DLC, @BigBadAndy. I preordered Kombat Pack 2. When I loaded up the game yesterday, the update went through, but the characters and skins were apparently separate. I went to Manage Game and Add-ons and it showed me there was nothing ready to install, which is where DLC characters usually tend to be.
I had to go in to the store and look up Mortal Kombat 11 Kombat Pack 2, then download each character individually as well as the skins. I’m not entirely convinced that I didn’t have to pay for the whole thing twice. For some reason, Mileena wasn’t there. I had to search for her BY NAME in the store for her to come up, and then it allowed me to download her.
I swear, every time they update the UI, stuff gets more and more broken or hidden or I don’t even know what. I still have my launch Xbox One from 2013 which feels borderline miraculous, but it’s definitely seen better days.
I’m not sure if I’m going to upgrade to PS5 or Series X. Probably doesn’t matter at this point since neither are available anywhere right now, so it’s not like I need to make a decision right away. But part of me is kinda looking forward to taking everything off of this system and putting it on something else that’s a bit newer and more powerful.
Glad your story ended well though! That sounds like an absolute pain in the ■■■.
I just kept checking back every like… half hour or so and then eventually it was all there.
Here is what happens, and it is exactly the same for my brother. You go in, setup your custom controller. Log out.
The next time you log in, you go to play and the buttons are all set to default. If you are playing online there is no way to change them. You get destroyed. Angrily you return to the main menu, go to the button settings and it shows your custom controls. You hit A, it makes a noise, and then your custom controls work they way they are supposed to. Repeat this every time you turn the game on.
There was a release issue with Kombat Pack 2 on Xbox One on the technical side of things. NetherRealm Studios tweeted about it.
That’s so strange, and I don’t doubt that it’s happening to you (and your bro), but I’ve never heard of this from anyone else in the NetherRealm Studios community, and I’m positive this would have been complained about on TestYourMight and in live tournaments if it was wide spread.
For me, I own Mortal Kombat (2011) on three platforms, Mortal Kombat XL on two, and Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate on one, and I’ve never had this at all, and I do use a remapped button layout. It’s saved and remembered from the first time I’ve remapped on Xbox 360, PC, PlayStation Vita, and Xbox One X.
So. How long do you think it will be till we see Kombat Pack 3? We first saw Kombat Pack 1 in August 2019, well… kind of. There was weirdness around it but that works for a date. It took, like, a year for all the characters to release. Aftermath was reveled in May 2020, about 2 months after Spawn was released in March. It released later that month, and then we saw KP2 for the first time in October 2020, about 5 months later.
The way I see it, there could be two routes, depending on how they release the characters. If they do one a month like KP1, then we could see the reveal trailer as early as this month. But if they dump it all at once like Aftermath and KP2, we probably won’t see anything until March at the earliest. It also kind of depends on when the new movie ends up coming out. Because you know they’re gonna wanna cross-promote with that. Probably with some new skins. Maybe by adding Nitara.
Just my thoughts on the whole thing anyway. But what do you think?
I have to say, the endings for Rain, Mileena and Rambo were pretty good. I liked they made the first two somewhat more sympathetic.
Not sure, but thats assuming we get a kombat pack 3
At the cost of Argus’s morality. Now I feel scummy about wanting him playable.
I’m pretty sure we will. Under whatever name.
What he did was sh i t ty, no doubt about that. A character can still be flawed, even downright despicable, yet still a fun to play as. I mean, Shao Kahn, Reptile and various other characters have done so, SO much worse than Argus.
