Mortal Kombat 11

sounds good man lol but i dont play MK11 anymore, i got on tekken 7

Nice to hear that Lia Montelongo (the original Sindel) actually likes MK11 Sindel.

I was just watched her talk about the origins of how she got the part for Sindel for MK3 on her personal IG (Instagram) story.

So I spent some time with Sindel’s variations and I have to say they finally made her interesting for the first time in almost 20 years. I never liked her MK:Deception and MK9 variants, but this one honestly feels way closer to her MK3 version than the other ones did. I do find it weird that she only has a proper projectile in variations only (the low fireball/EX beam) but the new tools they gave her make up for it (especially the hair flip variation, which is my current favorite of the tournament variations).

I will say this though:
Her retcon was completely unneeded and, at worst, spits in the face of those who liked Sindel’s old story (in that she was a good queen being mind controlled by Shao Khan, and once freed fought to keep Edenia free from other evildoers like Onaga).
Other than that however I think NRS did a great job at Sindel, it actually gives me more hope that Joker and Spawn will end up good. Spawn especially needs it, the Namco game from years back (Spawn:Armageddon) was the last videogame appearance he had, and while faithful to his character that game was only decent at best.

I know how a lot of folks feel the same way as you do. especially about sindel. Though I wouldn’t worry too much, the ending may not be canon for all we know.

It doesn’t even make sense. In MK9 her ward was the only thing that physically kept Kahn out of EarthRealm. Why would she have done that if she was evil all along?

It also is continuing to erase something I liked about MK along with Kabal. People who look like monsters still trying to help people.
Retcons don’t have to make sense IIRC, they just have to exist and overwrite the old context. I honestly don’t know if they even bothered to remember the magic barrier she cast, which legit throws a good chunk of the story for a loop. Apparently since MKX they had newer writers on the stories, so either they forgot or just decided to go their own direction.
Speaking of newer writers, am I the only one who was bothered when Stephanie erroneously said that Sindel’s Kwan Dao weapon was from Armageddon (when it was actually from Deception)? It kinda shows how the new blood at NRS didn’t do all of their homework when taking on the lore, and as someone who studied MK’s lore for years I couldn’t help but be mad at that moment (I literally shouted “WRONG!” when I heard it). I guess I was just old, but it rubbed me the wrong way to see someone who works at NRS being outright wrong on the MK lore.

I mean, Stephanie is an old pro player. She’s been with the series for a while, so even if she hasn’t worked at NRS for very long, she’s still probably very knowledgeable about the series. It was one small mistake out of everything else that’s been said that she’s gotten right. So… eh. Just brush it off.

Nope. (Turns into Rajang and cannonballs halfway across the country)

Ok seriously though, remember how I said I have a habit of seeing every little detail as a omen of things to come? Well I feel with how the new blood of NRS has been handling the overall world building, I can’t help but be uneasy for MK’s future. Yes it is true that Stephanie doesn’t actually write the games, but when they have her go on the Kombat Kast and say things like
“This is the real Sindel, she was evil all along”, something we old fans know isn’t true,
then I can’t help but feel the room around me feel dead (typically a dead-feeling aura for me is a bad indication of things).

It’s not like I’m actually mad for her being wrong, but I’m not gonna ignore my feelings either. I have yet to be wrong about these things, whether I like it or not.

That’s the point of a retcon though. She specifically said it was a CHANGE they made. They’re not lying. And like… really? What’s been wrong with the world building in the modern games?

That quote from CausingThought6 is what’s wrong with the world building in the modern games. As she said, the idea that you could like something but have it taken away via retcons is just bad, since more often than not the retcon does more harm than good.

Please keep in mind, I do not think all retcons are inherently bad; there have been rare cases where the new changes are designed to fix specifically bad issues in the original lore. The problem is that many of the new changes in the MK lore are pointless. Did we really need to change Skarlet’s origin of “Blood Golem/Prototype for Ermac” into “Random orphan that was taught blood magic by Shao Khan”? Or make characters like Baraka and Reptile into complete jobbers after every game that wasn’t UMK3? I don’t think so.

At least it hasn’t gone the route of Tekken where previously serious characters became outright jokes in later titles, but over the years I’ve still had reasons to show concern and/or judgment, which is something I don’t like doing with games I like.

I have reason to belive Reptile and Baraka were jobbers throughout the entire series.

The entire franchise as well.

Yes, so even in MK1-UMK3 he was a jobber. But that change din MK4 when he was promoted to a general. Even sHao Khan never promoted him that far.

For Mortal Kombat, DLC characters are not canonical representations of the characters though, and Arcade Ladder/Klassic Ladder is not canon for the current Mortal Kombat trilogy. Same with Multiplayer intros.

The only sources for canon are the game’s Story Modes and the Mortal Kombat X comics. That’s it.

The above items can end up being canon, but until the next game confirms or not, it’s best to treat it as not.

Since Sindel completely contradicts her character from Story Mode; not canon.

What about the statements on the stream?

Things on stream have been incorrect before.

My recommendation is to trust what’s in the actual games themselves. For now, that means this Sindel is non-canon.

I don’t have any skin in the game in terms of Sindel’s story and I’m on the outside edge of the curve here in terms of just plain not caring about the lore. But I do have to say that there’s simply no way the development team “forgot” about previous story elements for the game. I know folks here aren’t like this but it’s become a pet peeve watching all the destructive fan bases on the internet. The creators don’t spend less time than you thinking about these things and they don’t care less than the fans. If they make the decision to forget brainwashed victim Sindel and make her evil queen Sindel thats a choice they’ve made - not an oversight.

I’m the only one in the Internet who prefers evil Sindel :joy::joy::joy:

I just like the idea of people who look kind of monstrous still trying to do the right thing and be heroes. Although this applies to Kabal more then Sindel.

Um…isn’t this game about multiple timelines and possible back stories merging together? Does it seem unreasonable that there may be a evil queen version of Sindel and a brainwashed victim Sindel?
Seems to me like both could exist.
