Mortal Kombat 11

In her Klassic Tower ending, she mentions she found out that she was dead for millennia in this timeline, so yes.

Overall though, DLC characters are not their canonical representations until proven by the game’s themselves.

Yup that is true. Heck in one timeline they would’ve made reptile a noble defender of his people. It wouldn’t work well considering reptile’s character.

At least Baraka was a general of Shao Khan’s armies, and Reptile was Shang Tsung premier assassin. In later games they don’t even have that.

But whatever, as the series progressed the lines of who is relevant began to blur, and a lot characters ended up jobbers at some point. Honestly even Scorpion, Ed Boon’s golden boy, got nerfed heavily in terms of story influence (especially in the PS2 era).

Actually no. Unlike the Injustice series, where they confirmed from the start that multiple timelines were a thing, MK11 focused solely on the past and present of one specific timeline (the 2011 reboot). So unless they confirm that they’ve broken reality and start dimension hopping like Injustice 2’s multiverse mode, it’s safe to assume that the current reboot timeline is the only relevant one in terms of canon.

Isn’t that just his MKX arcade ending? Besides, who’s to say he wasn’t like that before Shao Khan invaded Zaterra? They left a lot of stuff open to interpretation when it comes to pre-Liu Kang winning MK1’s tournament.

I’m sure he would defend them to preserve his species considering they do have a society. But i doubt he’d be noble. Though it’d be nice to know more about Zaterra if they expanded more on the character. Heck we’d see more about them if they added Khameleon , or a new Saurian in the game.

The only new info I was able to find out about was how the saurians spat their acid. Turns out thethere’s a krypt item called Zatteran venom sack. So that means their acid is just highly corrosive venom. This isn’t entirely surprising sense some venom can destroy muscle tissue. but only when it’s injected. That of course depends on how much they of it they eject though.

If reptile comes back in MK12 I hope they give him a good change cause i’m tired of him being a jobber.

Actually yes:

Not only is it stated in the story mode that they have gone through countless timeline iterations (canons) but VS mode intros back this up as well by giving so many examples it’d likely take hours to sort out how many different timeline possibilities there are aside from the 2 specific ones they focus on in the story mode.

I’ll be honest, because most of the story is so bent on saying “past and present collide” I actually forgot that scene existed (though to be fair, I didn’t find MK11’s story to be memorable as a whole). I actually assumed that those parts where just the same timeline that Kronika repeatedly wiped from existence, in an attempt to make her perfect timeline.

But to be further honest, I don’t want to talk about this anymore. Any form of media that deals with alternate timelines tends to devolve into the madness that is understanding time itself. It’s actually starting to give me a headache just trying to remember the variables of the story (it doesn’t help I have bad memory to boot).

On a side note, does anyone know when Kano’s Brazilian costume is gonna be back on the MK11 store? They actually did make it available to all regions via micro-transactions (Time Crystals) but had to take it down because of an error; apparently most people bought the bundle and got nothing, so they had to fix it. Problem is that they have yet to bring it back, last I checked.

Normally I wouldn’t care, especially since I use Past Kano anyways (it’s actually accurate to his MK3 self, unlike the MK3 DLC costume), but considering how easy it can be to get Time Crystals (at least compared to Source Crystals in IJ2) I wouldn’t be opposed to getting that costume set if they made it available again.

Also, when’s the Skarlet costume coming out? It was previously exclusive to Amazon pre-orders, but people have reported seeing the AI use it in the towers, so they might be bring that into the store too.

Truer words were never spoken.

I mean, eventually it’s just nonsense. Which is the end result of most fighting game plots anyway let alone those that have been accumulating baggage since 1992. We are in to comic book territory here.

Ha! It’s funny because injustice!

Seriously can’t wait for Injustice 3. It’s gonna be great.

Retcons are an inevitability in any long-running game or franchise. At the very least, a series that lasts long enough will hit an effective “reset” button, even if it doesn’t just straight-up say “X never happened, Y happened instead.”

Andy’s point is salient here - at a certain point stories and canon will devolve into nonsense, because it is simply not possible to tell roughly the same story involving the same people (because fans riot when their favorites miss the party) for 20+ years without either descending into nuttery or retconning and reinventing your universe. Comic book lore is famously a jumbled-up ■■■■■■■■■■■ because Spider-Man has existed since the 1960’s but will never be allowed to grow up and stay growed up (and yes, I’m aware “growed” is not a word), and video game franchises are somewhat similar. The MK9 continuity is itself a retcon, where key tenets of the core MK1-MK:A canon were tossed aside, cherry picked, and/or reimagined. I tend to agree that victim Sindel is more interesting than evil queen Sindel (and also fits much better with Kitana’s general morality and disposition), but long series will almost invariably end up changing and reinventing their lore as they chug along. Not doing so eventually results in 90’s comics, with such convoluted and contradictory canons as to be functionally opaque to anyone but an obsessive fan.

And because it merits its own post: Reptile and Baraka have always been jobbers. Baraka’s only non-jobber appearance has been his turn as useful ally in MK11.

MK11 Crossplay? I read some vague article about this. Was anything officially announced?

Exactly what I was saying. Hopefully Reptile gets a major change in a future game where he’s no longer a jobber.

NRS mentioned it on Twitter at the very least. Apparently a beta form of it will be rolling out with the next patch. Will be between X1 and PS4 only, at least to start with.

Hopefully it comes to PC a bit down the road.

So they changed Joker’s face, it now looks a little closer to his IJ2 appearance:

On that note, why does NRS keep doing the Borderlands approach to dialogue? It’s 10 years too late for that IMO, they should just have the characters say words that don’t have to be bleeped. Lord knows it was only charming when Gearbox did it, it just feels like proper censorship from almost everyone else.

Whatever, it’s not like the opposite would be any better, if Final Fight: Streetwise was any indication. Still rubs me the wrong way though, to see a game with a “Strong Language” tag actively avoid using strong language.

I thought it was just censored for the stream/trailer because YouTube terms of service.

It used the same soft bleep the other censored dialogues do in game, so assume it’s like that in the final product- Oi! Who are you?! What happened to CausingThought?!

…No but seriously I didn’t expect a name change here, since unlike Steam you have to go through a lot of red tape to get one.

Also, what do you think about the confirmation that Richard Epcar is returning as the Joker? I know you think highly of it, considering how you called him “Richard [censored] Epcar” in the past, but honestly I never cared much for his role as Joker. I mean I know Mark Hamill retired from the role (then came back for some reason, then left again), but I still feel he wasn’t that consistent compared to others who voiced Joker in the past (except for the Young Justice VA, that Joker was well past his prime). IMO Epcar is at his best voicing characters like Batou in Ghost and the Shell, or The Admiral in Monster Hunter: World, but I always felt his roles as Raiden and Joker were not in his element (and the less said of his version of Akuma, the better).

At the same time though, since Hamill’s Joker voice is well past it’s prime (and in danger of ruining his vocal cords), I can’t really complain in the end. There have been far worse Joker voices after all.

Yeah. I was messing around on my 360 after playing MKvDCU and saw that I could change it there once for free. So I changed it to something more consistent with my other online usernames.

I guess I’m fine with Epcar, even if I don’t like his voice. I am firmly in the camp that if you can’t get mark and kevin then the actors you DO get shouldn’t try to copy them. Do what Batman: The Brave and the Bold did and get actors who do vastly different takes on the character’s voices. Jeff Bennett is one of my favorite Joker’s just for how much his performance stands out from the crowd. There isn’t and shouldn’t be one voice for these iconic characters, and each interpretation and performer should bring something new to the table that still fits the character.

I find it hilarious in hindsight that another Joker got announced on this year’s Game Awards…
