I’m having a very long week at work, so thank you for this
With every other fighter I play I’m able to play the way I do and not just be doing the same exact move over and over. Not in MK11.
I’ll admit. I do do a bit of… button mashing.
If you’re just button mashing, isn’t that kind of on you for not really learning the intricacies of the characters or the various gameplay mechanics though?
I’ve played Kung Lao a lot more than the other characters, and I’ve found that I’ve really worked myself in to a state where I can strategize, use his full moveset instead of one golden combo, keep pressure on when I can, know what combos leave me open for punishment on block or where they can be interrupted so I can vary how much of a combo I do to try and fool the opponent into opening themselves up for an opportunity that’s not there, when to employ a certain mixup, when to retreat, when to teleport or dive kick or jump kick or naked jump or throw, when to use armored rise or roll and when not to… The list goes on and on.
For me, that level of depth and strategy is a ton of fun, whether I’m playing against the computer or against people in KombatLeague; a mode that somehow managed to get me to play online.
I don’t think the gameplay is slow because I’m always trying to strategize, think ahead, anticipate, react as quickly as possible when I see an opening, etc. it may not be run button, mixup, combo of death fast, but I never really dug that about MKX to begin with. I feel like that’s a style of MK game that UMK3 fans appreciate and while that’s certainly fine for them, it doesn’t work as much for me. But that’s just me. To each his own, of course.
As for customization, I do like that there are a constant stream of rewards, I just wish that the skins were easier to come by, because that’s turned in to a slog. They said you’d get a skin for the character you use every time you complete a tower, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.
I also think that they grossly overestimated the value of augments and konsumables. Many konsumables are so rare they’re hardly worth using and only a few, namely the large health regen, are worth bothering with. The augments, well, you find a few you like and the rest are ignored. Not a fun reward.
Oh and they absolutely could’ve left the forge out completely. Collect crap that can only be combined there to create more crap. A few skins, sure, but that’s about it.
I know it’s not always as simple as “do this not that,” but if they could’ve taken the time, money, and design team manpower away from konsumables, forge items and the forge and applied that to designing more unique outfits and gear for characters, I’d have much rather seen that instead.
As for Kombat Pack 2, it certainly seems like it’ll happen thanks to the leaks. I just hope Boonsy doesn’t tangle those luxurious brows in too many other franchises.
If we get six more characters for KP2 and three are guests, that’ll be a bummer for me. No fighting game needs that many guests, especially over fan favorites or even simply home franchise characters with small but loyal followings.
I’d love it if KP2 was parts of the leak and parts of the Terminator troll: Mileena, Rain, Li Mei, Sareena, Fujin and Sheeva. That would be an amazing group of six to me. A nice blend of popular characters and rarities, trilogy era and 3D era. I know it won’t happen, but Man would that be great!
Curious… Let’s assume two guests for KP2. We know one already (supposedly) is Ash. We also know Fujin and Sheeva are likely in too. So if that leaves 3 spots left in KP2, which three MK characters would you want to see? Or, if you think they’ll go 3 MK and 3 guests again like KP1, which two guests and one MK character would you like to complete the group of six?
DoomSlayer seems like a pretty good bet imo. I also think that there’s a chance they could add a new character that comes directly from the Mortal Kombat Movie coming out in 2021. When KP1 won’t even be finished till MARCH, they almost certainly could pull it off. And as much as I’d dislike it, Micheal Myers is a suggestion that’s floated way to often and just… makes a degree of sense. You know they’re gonna do three more guests. They’ve openly admitted they sell more than every MK character combined. I personally don’t mind the guest characters, I just get a kick out of crossovers and it’s clear that the team at NRS likes doing them just as much as making their own characters, so who am I to complain.
Li Mei and Sareena are characters I’m always for. But I really don’t think they’ll do Mileena and Rain. Both of them have had their gameplay given to other characters, and Rain would be repeated DLC, which they’re generally against. And I know this is heresy, but I really don’t want to see them do the ninjas AGAIN for the 11th time. Reptile, Ermac, Mileena… they’re all kind of tired to me and I’m glad they left them out and gave the spotlight to other characters who don’t get it as often.
But there are plenty of MK characters I want. Aside from the aforementioned, there’s also Havik, Kira, Kobra, Kai, Daegon, Asgaarth, Nitara, Drahmin, Hotaru, Onaga, Ashrah (especially Ashrah). Any combination of these characters would make me a very happy girlie. Maybe they could do an old scrapped character like Belokk.
I agree with the forge. I guess my question is, why do you need a constant stream of rewards? Most of the skins are just alt colors of the same handful of actual COSTUMES anyway. Like, could it at least be possible that you always unlock the primary color of a particular costume set first, and then you start getting the recolors? Or at the very least just let us BUY them with the koins.
And as for how I play. I’m a smart girl. I use my brain a lot day to day. But when it comes to gaming, I’m basically a jock. I don’t want to strategize. I don’t want to have to think. I just want to relax and beat the crap out of either my opponent or hoards of bad guys by doing cool stuff. (Which is why I struggle with the growing RPG-ification of gaming in general but that’s a whole other thing). When I pick a character, I know which sequences do what, but every time I try to strategize and read my opponent, be it AI or the few times I’ve played with friends, I get my ■■■ handed to me and I don’t get from these games the reason I play. So I just try to rapidly get in as manny attacks as possible. In past MK games, and other fighting games in general, this strategy has served me well and I’m able to get what I want from my games. Sometimes I even amaze myself with what this strategy is able to pull off (I’ve done quite a few full-healthbar juggles in a variety of titles). But every time I try to use my strategy in MK11… I’m reminded of my first time trying Kotal Kahn, no matter what I tried I always just did that ■■■■■■■ saw grab over and over again. That set a very poor tone for me over the whole length of the game, and I see echoes of it every time I play, no matter what character I pick. It’s just… not as fun. I could make all kinds of excuses for it, but at the end of the day it comes down to the fact that I don’t play fighting games to think.
And don’t get me STARTED on the fact that supers are locked behind a certain length of health bar, they’re the coolest ■■■■■■■ move and I almost never get to actually use them in this title.
Smh…everybody leaks everything. Like seriously, keep that leaked info to yourself for once.
Anyways, the next Season of Kombat League is one big tribute to Richard Divizio. Anybody that thinks otherwise needs to really do research on Divizio and the characters he dressed up as for the past MK games.
I’ve wanted a big story expansion with tones of new characters in pretty much every NRS game to date. So I would be over the moon about that.
I really don’t like leaks myself. Leaks ruin hype, they get people’s hopes up, or bring them down. What exactly is the point of leaks anyway? For the record, I don’t care if the leaks bring good news or bad news to me.
Sure leaks have been going for a long time but that doesn’t make them nay less of an issue for me. Some may love leaks because of the hype it brings to them. But hey who knows.
Ultra Kombo: Hint at a possible AND potential Killer Instinct x Mortal Kombat crossover fighter/fighting game?

This I find hard to believe.
Though if we did an MK vs KI I’d have this match up.
- Jago vs Liu Kang
- Orchid vs Sonya
- Fulgore vs Sektor
- Kilgore vs Cyrax
- Cinder vs Scorpion
- Glacius vs Sub-Zero
- Riptor vs Reptile
- Kan-Ra vs Shang Tsung
- Mira vs Sindel
- Sabrewulf vs Baraka
- Kim Wu vs Kung Lao
- Sadira vs Milleena
- Aganos vs Tremor
- Thunder vs Raiden
- Eagle vs Nightwolf
- Omen vs Noob Saibot
- Spinal vs Ermac
- Maya vs Jade
- TJ Combo vs Jax
- Gargos vs Shao Khan
- Eyedol vs Goro
- Tusk vs Rain
- Hisako/Shin Hisako vs Kitana
I can’t think of any match ups for Aria. I considered Kronika but considering how powerful she is I don’t know.
I’d do Shao Kahn vs Aria and Gargos vs Shinnok or Onaga.
I’d also have Kitana go against Kim Wu and move Kung Lao to Tusk.
Also. Johnny Cage vs Rash. I know Rash is a guest but that pairing is gold.
hmmm, I guess we could let some guests in. Ok lthen.

Where can Kano fit in all of this?
Wow. Wonder if that was the “big surprise” Ed was hinting at in his interview in Brazil. If this turns out to be real and it’s in the Terminator tease (or whatever you want to call it), kinda makes me wonder if other stuff in it is real as well. I don’t particularly care as much about Hara Kiri’s and what not, but man would that get me excited for Sareena, Mileena, Li Mei and Rain!!
Of course, I’m not holding my breath. Obviously. But to me, if they’re not in as DLC at some point, it kinda puts NRS in somewhat of a bind. Fans will be ■■■■■■ if some of these things happen and some don’t. Overtly teasing a bunch of stuff that turns out to be half true seems like an all around bad idea.
I’m sure the six characters in the tease are probably a troll, especially given that Mileena and Rain, two long requested characters are there, and NRS kinda seems to enjoy playing with the emotions of those characters fans for whatever reason.
Also, the two rather ridiculous options of Meat and Mokap. Not saying they wouldn’t try and take another crack at those two, but adding two joke characters over trilogy characters like Smoke, Cyrax and Sektor or even 3D era favorites or (far more likely) guests? Seems like a stretch.
Either way, it gets me a little hyped for whatever they might have down the road. My original assumption was that we’d get two kombat packs with some classic skins and that’d be it, but with the leaked stages, leaked friendships and what not… It looks like they’re giving MK11 more support than any other game before, which I definitely dig.
Yeah DoomSlayer seems pretty likely, even if the character himself is pretty generic, though to be fair I haven’t played the new games, so maybe they’ve improved him a lot in that regard. I’m just thinking of the old games.
A movie tie in character could also be possible, though if the movie isn’t coming until 2021, that seems like an awful long DLC tail off of this game. If they start KP2 in say, April or even May, they still have a substantial amount of time to get six more characters out the door, but who knows. Maybe not.
Either way, I’d be fine with it provided the movie and character are both good. Then again, lots of longtime fans have been clamoring for Art Lean to be in the games since the original movie came out back in 1995 and the dude basically does nothing but get trounced by Goro, so I don’t think the bar’s all that high lol.
Yeah more guests seem like a safe bet, I just hope it’s not Michael Myers. I’m so beyond done with the horror characters. I know others like them and that’s great for them, no question, but they’re more or less wasted on me. I do think that Myers is a distinct possibility though. Same goes for Pennywise.
Yeah Ed’s face practically lit up when he was talking about possible crossovers in one of the Brazil interview clips above. I think his eyebrows danced lol. Dude seems to really dig guests. Hopefully they get some good ones, since it’s more or less inevitable. The Terminator is a fun idea and he’s got some fun stuff. Also love Spawn as a character. Joker, I’m not excited for at all, but who knows, maybe he turns out well?
Aww yeah! Li Mei / Sareena hive, right here!
Maaaybe Mileena since the fan base has been soooo adament, but yeah Rain seems unlikely for the reason you mentioned. As for not wanting to see more ninjas, I personally prefer at least one more to return, especially if it means leaving out some of my less favorite MK3 characters, but that’s just me.
I wonder if NRS owns Belokk or if the character is owned Probe or whoever was doing the port job for MK4. I honestly doubt it matters at this point. Who knows. I do like those more obscure characters though. Skarlett in MK9, Tremor in MKX… It’d be nice to get someone like Hydro, Tasia, King Gorbak or Belokk. I’ll be honest, I don’t know that I’ve heard the name Asgaarth before. What’s that character from? Kittleson’s comic?
As for the rest of the characters you mentioned. I’d be all in favor of any of them appearing. I’d also add Reiko to that list, but otherwise that looks great to me!
Well, the easy anser is that they keep players grinding, and if you’re grinding, you’re playing and if you’re playing you’re potentially spending money. They want to keep you in their universe, and while the gameplay itself is rewarding, adding an additional loop that keeps players attached to the game makes all the sense in the world.
My only issue is that many of those rewards are so superfluous that I think they might as well have not even bothered. Give us more stuff we’ll actually want to grind for. KI kinda had this issue in Shadowlords as well. I didn’t mind some ideas, but many others felt unnecessary. I think some developers get the idea in their head that it would be cool for players to change the parameters of a match by adding this buff or that buff and I think most people just want to play the game. The variety in how you can approach a match is a nice idea in theory, but the rewards that enable you to do this, along with actually using them in practice, don’t really do much to justify themselves as rewards.
That’s just me though. Maybe other people get a huge thrill out of frozen rockets and what not. I’d personally rather just have more character outfits and gear.
Yeah this seems to be the direction NRS is going with their titles. They want them to be tournament viable and I think beyond that, they don’t want to be seen as sort of the broken American fighting game next to the likes of Street Fighter, Tekken and what not.
It’s a trade off. I can still do long combos and juggles and all that stuff, and it actually feels more natural for me to do that in this game, but it definitely took practice.
Eh, that’s what most fighting games are though once you get past the initial level of learning the moves and jumping in though. I think you can still play MK11 that way. Learn a few strings, put in a special move here and there. It helps to look up some combos on Youtube if you haven’t already. There’s some good stuff out there. Stuff that takes you through each part of the combo one hit at a time to show you what to do and when. I know that’s a bit more involved than button mashing, but it’s still pretty fun and rewarding.
Love those matchups! I might go Mira vs Nitara since they’re both vampires, but I get that Sindel’s a bigger name and versus game tends to go for the bigger names over the obscure characters. I might also go Tusk vs Kotal Khan since they’re both big sword wielders, but Rain’s good too. Otherwise, definitely dig that list.
Asgaarth is from the cartoon. He’s a bird man from Edenia.
Good queston, I don’t know.
Though in terms of the story, I could see the Aria and Shao Khan working together.
First off. The movie is coming in early 2021. (March 5th) Second, Spawn isn’t releasing till MARCH. And the DLC started in June. That’s 9 months. Assuming there’s at least two months after Spawn releases till KP2 starts (May 2020), that would mean that the last character of KP2 will be a February release. Assuming that this new character would probably have been revealed in trailers for the film if they were gonna also put him in the game, He’d be right on time to promote the movie if he came out last.
I’d actually pair him up with Sadira. They’re both in it for the money, with no higher loyalty or ideology guiding their efforts in the plot. I think that’d be a fun pairing to be honest.
- Jago vs Liu Kang
- Orchid vs Sonya
- Fulgore vs Sektor
- Kilgore vs Cyrax
- Cinder vs Scorpion
- Glacius vs Sub-Zero
- Riptor vs Reptile
- Kan-Ra vs Shang Tsung
- Mira vs Sindel
- Sabrewulf vs Baraka
- Kim Wu vs Kitana
- Sadira vs Kano
- Aganos vs Rain
- Thunder vs Raiden
- Eagle vs Nightwolf
- Omen vs Noob Saibot
- Spinal vs Ermac
- Maya vs Jade
- TJ Combo vs Jax
- Gargos vs Shinnok
- Tusk vs Kung Lao
- Hisako/Shin Hisako vs Mileena
- Aria vs Shao Khan
- Shadow Jago vs Rain
- Johnny Cage vs Rash
FIXED! I realized I had an error in my match up list. So I fixed it and added Kano.
Ah nice! I’d be curious to see how that character would look and play in MK. Sounds good!
Yeah you’re right. I think that timing could work perfectly. It could probably allow them to slow down the DLC a bit to time the tie-in character with the movie even more. Not that people want it slowed down, of course, but still. A month isn’t that long if your timing window puts that character in February and the movie’s set to hit in March. Good call there.
I like that. Good matchup.
Uh oh.
Still like the Tusk vs Kotal Khan idea since they’re both big dudes with big swords, but I do think Kung Lao has to be in there somewhere. I think if Jago’s matched up with Liu Kang, I wouldn’t mind seeing Shadow Jago matched up with Kung Lao. Feels more… symmetrical, I think. So I’d leave Rain (or perhaps Ferra Torr based on size) vs Aganos, Shago vs Kung Lao, and then have Tusk vs Kotal Khan. That’s just me though.
Man, I knew the earlier KI characters matched up well with MK, but based on what you have here, I think there’s some really good comparisons throughout. Great job, man!
