Community is something I’ve thought about a decent amount, mostly for Killer Instinct, but also for other games and titles as well.
TC’s post was largely about mentality and attitude, and that’s really the crux of the conversation. People play games (and as relevant in this new era of game entertainment, watch games) to have fun. I have watched people stream absolute randomness because the streamer was having fun, not because I liked the game they were playing. Joy is infectious, and I thoroughly enjoyed taking that journey with them even if I cared not a whit about the actual title being played.
At the end of the day, I think that should be the guiding light behind your participation in this or any other community. If you aren’t having fun, then go do something else with your time. Read a book, learn an instrument, go out and meet a pretty girl, etc. If your time interacting with the game and its players doesn’t bring you joy, then find something else that does. Don’t spend your precious free time trying to convince other people to hate something because you don’t like it anymore. That’s just a really, really lame way to spend one’s free time.
On the subject of actively growing the game/scene, then really, just play it and have fun, and let other people know you are playing and having fun. We’re not doing the KI: Asia stuff (for which I want to stress, 0_rez is doing almost all the heavy lifting in planning/organization) because we expect KI to take over the Singapore FGC - we’re doing it because the game is ■■■■ fun, and there are players here who love it and are excited to show it off to their other FGC friends. We’re doing tournaments and running casual sessions because we’re having a good time. That’s all it’s about; more importantly, that’s all it needs to be about.
I think a big error many KI fans make is they seem to have this compulsive need to be recognized as a “big” game, on the level of competitive Marvel or SF. While I’d love if that were the case, the game itself has never needed that. All it needs is a group of fans who love it enough to travel to events and compete in them, even if those events themselves are small. People who are excited to travel and play Killer Instinct, even if there are only 20 or 30 people there. That’s it. Participate in online tournies if you can’t make the majors, play online and make friends if you can’t make the online events. Just play and love KI.
The absolutely hilarious thing to me is that bulk of the “KI is dead” stuff came at a time when Killer Instinct had year-to-year growth in all of its major tournaments. KI grew each year at Evo, grew each year at CEO, and grew each year at Combo Breaker. Smaller regional events didn’t have good numbers, but then again they never did anyway. But instead of enjoying that growth and success, people decided to proclaim their own scene dead. And for what? To be miserable and shout at a bunch of other people who still like the game? Again - that’s a really, really lame way to spend your free time.
People said KI was dead in Season 1, and then they said it was dead in Season 2. Now it’s Season 3 and the chorus continues? Who gives a ■■■■? Our dead game still made top 8 in early regs for Combo Breaker. Focus on that, register yourself if you can make it, and keep having a great time playing and watching KI when and where you can. That’s all there is to it, and that’s all there’s ever been to it.
