How would you feel if Microsoft comissioned Netherealm for KI2?

I wonder if it would be easier to offer a MKvKI in the form of an expansion pack.

NR styled presentation with KI current system would be rather nice

This is why our game is dying, that word exclusivity

Ishmael . yall need to start the conversation with them. nothing on earth is ever impossible

Mk vs KI would be a block buster hit, This will be microsoft’s chance of putting a KI game on Switch and PS4, But the Microsoft guys just need to be more open hearted. The fans want it, start a conversation with NRS team , lets see what they think,

A simple email will do that Ishmael, I know u are one of those that think straight and think progress about KI. Leading that effort will be insanely monumental

all it takes is

NOOOOOOOOOOO !!!
i don’t like the combat system in mkx or injustice.
What makes KI so good is the accesable combat system.
btw; all mkx characters feel the same (anti air, low punch, hard punch,..) if you compare to KI where all characters are totally different, just look at the roster. Mk has like 10 of the same but different ninjas; one with fire, with smoke, poison, ice, blood, souls,… its so stupid. No creativity at all !!!
Please do no ruin this franchise by giving it to NRS.

I don’t really like the weird animation and style of NRS games but that doesn’t make them bad games. Lots of people enjoy NRS games and thats great. But if I were to see NRS developing the next KI I would be a bit disappointed. I would most likely still buy the game but I would see it as a downgrade as compared to if it were developed by IG again.

Story mode = NRS
Combat = IG
UI and design = MS

My take on Netherealm’s games is along the same way I feel about The Legend of Zelda, or the “fixed overhead forklift controls” Resident Evil games: They’re not bad games, and I can’t get into them at all, but I totally see how other players can enjoy them as much as they do.

For me, I never enjoyed Mortal Kombat or Injustice solely because the combat felt clunky, slow, and awkward, like a pair of forklifts duking it out on the moon. While fighters like Gorilla Grodd, Reptile, and Mileena are all really cool, their games feel as fluid as frozen molasses. I’m NOT saying that they’re “bad games,” mind you- they’re just not for me.

I simply prefer smoother and faster fighting games, like KI, and before I was burned out on them because each new version was the old one with a new coat of pixels, Soul Calibur and Smash Brothers. I’m not saying that they couldn’t do Killer Instinct, but it would be a huge shift from the kinds of fighting games that they’re used to making. Iron Galaxy and Double Helix before it have done an incredible job with our current KI, and I hope we get some more content soon! :video_game::face_savoring_food:

Yes and no. On one hand, I LOVE the production values and cohesion of NRS’ story modes. They’re far above and beyond anything else in the genre, in my opinion.

However, if I’m looking at the actual storytelling itself; what the characters do, the decisions they make, what’s happening to them throughout the story, logical consistency and how lore is treated, I still think there’s some room for improvement.

That’s not a bad thing, mind you. I’m not saying they can’t tell a story, especially when I said they’re head and shoulders above the competition in this aspect. But I still don’t think the storytelling bar is particularly high in the genre, and even the best games still suffer from some moments where you can’t possibly think a character could be THAT stupid, gullible or unaware.

Maybe I’m being a homer, but I like the way characters are written in KI from a lore standpoint. Yeah, some of the pre-match dialog in Shadow Lords can be intentionally silly or rife with inside jokes or whatever, but I think there’s a respect for the characters and a consistency and complexity in the lore that I enjoy.

The biggest knock I have against KI’s story is that there’s simply no good way to access the entire story in one place like MK’s story mode. Now sure, I’d LOVE it if MK games used individual character’s arcade endings as canonical support info for the story mode, but even then, if you want to know what happened in this chapter of the series, you have one complete mode that you can play for hours from start to finish and you get everything. KI’s seasonal iterations kinda prevent that from happening, especially given the different ways they chose to present story from one season to the next.

Still, if a new KI were to come out, I think Shadow Lords would make an excellent hub for storytelling. You could have a lot of cut scenes, a lot of support lore in the dossiers, and missions that could tell you what’s happening both to the character you’re using and the world as a whole. It could also allow for new characters to be dropped in with their own sets of unique story missions for both them and the main plotline.

I think there’s a TON of potential there because it’s not just a five hour mode and you’re done and that’s it. You’ve seen the whole story for the game. No, it could be a long term process that rewards players with story in a variety of ways over a much longer term, but cohesion in story telling and an easy access point for looking at the story in order, from dossiers to smaller, lower end cut scenes to full cinematic cut scenes would be a must.

TL/DR: I like the way KI takes care of its lore, while MK stories tend to be a little inconsistent in that regard and also have trouble with character logic at times. NRS can still bring it with the production values, no question, but I’d love to see NRS keep evolving their storytelling while MS/IG evolves Shadow Lords in to a more consistent hub for story content for all characters and all main and secondary plotlines taking place.

That why I have MS = Design, design encompassing lore, dialouge, ect..

how about NRS = story mode cinematics

But if you only want them for cinematics then there’s no point in hiring a game developer over an animation studio like the one that does the Halo cutscenes.

It is if you are using NRS characters. Duh

I disagree with your hypothesis that NRS is “the fighting game studio right now that just does fighting games”, specifically because along with each release (IGAU, MKX, I2) they push mobile applications that are inaccessible to players without sight but are designed to be used to also obtain a similar portable playing experience. Moreover, you state that their engine is “top knotch”. However, it has been proven time and time again that there are flaws in their systems with elements like customisation and DLC (see the Kombat Pack issues that plauged downloads for early access players making you have to reinstall numerous times without things working as expected with no guarantee that they would when you had a new character release).

Finally, my main reason that I feel NRS would not do KI justice is the simple fact that their combo system since IGAU and most games before it as well, feels clunky and nowhere near as fluid. In order to do the game justice they would have to abandon what appears to be a core philosophy (dial-a-combo mechanics, which I am personally not really a fan of).

I can kind of understand your logic, but I feel that NRS should not be the studio to take on a KI sequel without some serious consideration of what the current KI has done well and working from that, instead of abandoning the games ideals altogether.

The only reason I say absolutely not, is because I hate, with a passion, their combat system. Also, I don’t know how good their netcode is, but when I played MKXL for a bit to see if I’d like it, it was still terrible comparatively to KI’s.

Man I’m super late to this thread but holy crap seems like a fun topic so I’ll chime in.

While a MK vs KI might seem like a cool idea (I’ve thought about a lot actually) I’m personally against it. With these cross-over games there are always a lot of questions that have to be answered like what kind of engine would it use, or what kind of combat system, do KI characters get to combo break but MK characters don’t…etc etc. From speaking with people over the years through my stream and various events many have told me they heavily dislike NRS games because of the way they play/feel. Same goes for the NRS scene in the sense that we have no idea if they would like the game if used KI’s combo system considering they use 4 buttons and KI uses 6. Some kind of middle ground would have to be found in order to make these two game series work as one title. Somehow I just feel like one of if not both communities might end up getting the short end of the stick or being unhappy with the turnout for whatever reason, though I’m sure both developer parties would do the best they could.

I think the more reasonable approach is to do cross-over characters for each series; so put some MK characters in a new KI and put some KI characters in MK11. Everyone knows how much I wanted Scorpion to be in this version and he would of played awesomely knowing IG. I’ll leave the logistics of figuring out licensing and fees or whatever to the Ed Boons and Ken Lobbs of the industry but it sure would be pretty freaking cool to make something like this a reality. Booting up MK11 and being able to play Fulgore or Orchid OMG that would be so sick and vice versa in KI4.

Either way the cross-promotion between the games would be fantastic PR for each other and would definitely create a lot of buzz in the FGC.

Commenting on the main topic of NRS working on a new KI sequel I don’t think that would ever happen just simply on the basis they have their hands full already between a new MK and Injustice every 2 years and whatever else they happen to be working on like their mobile titles. I will say though I definitely wouldn’t mind if they got to work on the story mode. We all know how infamous NRS is for their amazing cinematic story telling and animation so for them to make something like that for KI, a game that definitely deserves it would be amazing.
