Anyone else nervous about this?

If it helps, around the studio, we call these characters “Remix”, not “Clone”.

I suppose we should be happy no one is looking at Kilgore and crying “No more shadow characters!”

I for one like KI’s War Machine.

I never liked clones

If Kilgore is considered a clone, then I like this type of clone.

What I like the most is that Kilgore is NOT Fulgore. It’s a new toy for Aria, but totally independent from Fulgore.

That’s the reason because I don’t like Shadow Jago: he is(lore wise) Jago. Yes, they splited on 3(Jago, Omen, Shago), but is kinda weird.

That’s the reason I wouldn’t like Shorchid or Ben Ferris.

Remix making a new character=Great!
Remix making a version of a current character=ehh…

There is no doubt that Shago is unique gameplay wise. So could be Shorchid. But I would prefer an Orchid remix into shadow Firecat(independent from Orchid) than Shadow Orchid herself

Remix works and as labels go I would say it’s pretty accurate. I’m actually comfortable calling him a “clone” because I don’t really have a negative connotation for clone characters. But this is the problem with labels. No one in this thread is arguing about the facts regarding Kilgore, just whether he fits the label. Who cares? We all agree that he uses Fulgores skeleton, a lot of Fulgores normal and special move animations, but doesn’t play much like Fulgore. Those are the facts. Whether we call him a clone, a remix, or Tennessee Williams.

As far as the OP I will add my voices to those that respectfully disagree. I don’t feel like what I’m buying into when I buy KI is the uniqueness of each characters c.MK animation. And I think from a visual design point of view, a character identity point of view and a gameplay design point of view Kilgore is really unique and interesting.

I was certain the leak was fake or a deliberately misleading bit of art from the devs right up until the official video was posted. I really didn’t expect to get a new character announcement and in the off chance we got one I wouldn’t have guessed this. Or expected that two others would follow. I don’t feel cheated at all because he uses Fulgores animations.

I will say I’m a bit nervous about the announcement of his pricing/availability. I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect he will be free but I’m anticipating a lot of faux outrage from the entitlement crowd at whatever the pricing is.

I dunno if it’s worth saying my thoughts on the clone debate, but here goes. Smash Bros. has both clones and semi-clones. A clone would be a near identical copy in terms of moveset and gameplay. This would be like Dark Pit compared to Pit. They have a lot of shared animations, but some attack properties differ. A semi-clone would be Captain Falcon’s “clone,” Ganondorf. They share a few animations, but Ganondorf is made to be slower, heavier, and stronger. Ganondorf is more a “bait and punish” type, while Captain Falcon is very speedy and aggressive.

That being said, I don’t think it’s fair to call Kilgore a clone when he seems to have a different play style than Fulgore. I think it’s reasonable to see him as a semi-clone, just like Shago and Omen.

My guess is that there will not be a season 4, but rather a full-fledged sequel. If there was a season 4 they probably wouldn’t need to be filling in time with remix characters, but would need to be actually working on season 4 proper.

I believe in season 4. IG are great.

I wouldn’t rule out season 4 just yet. But I do think it’s a legitimate question to ask if they would be spending development time adding remixed characters when the plan was to release 8 fully fledged new characters in the future. There’s a reason decapre is in the final SF IV update not the first one…

If I had to speculate (take note: this is complete and utter speculation) I would guess that they have some idea what the next year will look like but may not have a final decision on whether a full season 4 will go ahead or not. They may be waiting for some data on how many people are buying accessories and KI gold, playing ShadowLords etc. If they have (or do) decide not to make a season 4, I think people need to prepare for the idea that we’re not likely to see a big “there will be no season 4!” announcement.

As far as a sequel, I would pre-order the thing today if they announced one. But I really, really doubt they are making any substantial plans to work on a sequel. This game still has lots of life in it and I don’t think a sequel is likely to be a huge priority for MS. What I think seems most likely at this point is a long tail for this KI without a season 4. Periodic releases of remixed characters, maybe a new guest in the future. Some feature updates and additions (seems like they have hinted at Ultimates pretty hard…). More DLC costumes and accessories and updates to ShadowLords. these things can be spread out over time, on a relatively small budget (yes, smaller even than the Season budget that everyone thinks is too small) and keep the game going until or if they decide they are ready to make a new entry in the series. I will continue to support this game under that model. Again, I would love to be wrong about a sequel and I would buy it today. But if we see a KI sequel before 2020 I would be pretty surprised.

I agree, I don’t expect a sequel to be announced for another 3 years or so, if they do make one at all. Maybe they’d do periodic dlc updates over a good chunk of time and then when they have more time to come back to making a full season 4, they will. Who knows. But yes I will personally support the game for as long they want to keep making stuff for it.

On a side note, I really don’t feel like these three new characters should be free. I think that’s actually pretty ridiculous for people to be expecting that, if they are.

Although I hate myself for it, I’m being optimistic. Seems like these three characters will keep us busy throughout March/April, and that will give three months or so until E3 next summer where S4 will be announced. I hope that’s the case. The game just started expanding with the PC release. It would be sad if this is near the end as far as seasons go.

I haven’t heard anyone say they should be free yet. But if they announce a price and we don’t immediately see a thread saying they should be free to DE owners/Season 3 owners/Ultra S1-3 owners/“the people who have supported this game from the start”/any other group to whom the poster belongs - then I will eat my hat.

Not worried at all. All I see here is that IG probably doesn’t have the budget for something bigger and more detailed, but that’s fine by me. Kilgore looks fun and I’m sure IG is doing their best with what they have at the moment.

I’ve got few issues with Kilgore really. By what I’ve seen in-game his playstyle looks distinct enough that he’ll play very differently from Fulgore. I’m not happy that their normals seem similar but Kilgore’s style of play makes me more hopeful about the later two characters and how they’ll be interesting to play as.

Got a chance to see him and he’s awesome!

Who said that yhe rest 2 characters will be remix characters?

No one said it - although Keits did say “we refer to these characters as remix characters” (emphasis added) in another thread. But it’s purely speculation.

Having said that, though, I think it’s highly likely based on the timeframe, the nature of the announcement, the lack of teasers and trailers for the characters, and the fact that, as I said earlier, you don’t put out remix characters first and then release brand new ones. But anything is possible until confirmed otherwise by the devs - and I’ve certainly been wrong before.

Great point. I know we all have our definition of what a “clone” character is and isn’t, but as long as they play differently, I don’t mind that some assets are reused in looks or gameplay animations. Hell, I don’t even mind if they use the same character and put a new coat of paint on them so long as they play differently, but that’s a different conversation for a different thread.

Either way, as far as Kilgore goes, starting with Fulgore and having another robot wasn’t personally what I would’ve been most excited for, however I do think that he looks cool, I love his gameplay mechanics and I think he’s a really fun character to use. Granted, I’ve only played a few matches with him, but so far, I’m loving what he can do and for me, that’s the most important part.

Disappointed? Nah. I chalk him up as another win for the gameplay team. If some assets had to be reused to make this beast, I’m more than fine with it.

However… Will people be thrilled if the next two characters are along these lines? Or perhaps more? Tough to say. I’m still psyched for a Pretransformation Cinder or a Shadow Orchid or some of the other alt-ideas, so we’ll just have to see how the next two characters turn out. Hopefully people can try and see what’s there and how fun that is versus what’s not there or what they were expecting. We’ll see.

In short: Not in the slightest.

In slightly longer short: Similar/inspired model design and a few similar/reused animations does not, a clone, make. The way you play the two are drastically different in both mechanic, archetype and matchup tools. By this concept, we could make every character’s model the same, say Cinder retro, with slight color variations to indicate who’s who and they would all be clones of the original due to the shared visual modeling, similar/reused moves and overall mechanics.

Wait a minute there buddy Fulgore is the clone Kilgore was first!

No, I’m really pumped about him. I’ve been watching a lot of the footage on the YouTubes, and he’s looking like he will be to Fulgore as Mira is to Maya–some shared animations to make the relationship part of the character’s theme, but otherwise a completely different playstyle.

Kilgore seems to do very little damage when he’s not overheated–I saw a 17-hit combo do only 17% damage. I can’t remember which level or ender was used, though. BUT, his ranged options are bonkers. I’m still not sure what the vanishing move does–maybe part of a whiff bait? I’m excited to learn more about him, though.

I can say this for sure: his ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ aesthetic and the way it informs his move set are really, really cool.

I really love it that the last thing he does in his intro animation after he struggles to boot up makes me think “Ta-daaaaaa!”
