I don’t think Maya is particularly complex. Nowhere near Cinder, anyway. The most she has to actively worry about is holding onto her daggers, but other than that she’s a fairly straightforward character for the most part.
So the way KI is currently, is how it would have been regardless of DH staying?
DH planted the basics:the combo system, the counter breakers, the ultras…
IG worked with this basics, twisting and polishing them to improve the game as it is now: the best version of KI.

Of course, but we must remember that IG (or even DH) are not totally in charge: MS is.
IG put they unique flavour in the game, but always under MS supervision.
With this I mean that DH maybe could have done some things differently (for the better or the worse), but MS knew what they wanted for the game.
There is no point speculating about what DH would have do.
