What happens when season 3 is over?

We may not have seen costume/stage/accessory packs released as specific DLC yet, but there’s no reason why they couldn’t do this, in a scenario where we’re no longer getting Seasons of characters; paid cosmetic DLC can still earn them money, make the fans happy, and be nice, miniature updates to keep the experience fresh, and even accompany theoretical balance changes, maybe every two or three months?

But why would they do that when they could make those accessories for the next game. You guys are forgetting they will be making a separate game. Why would they take precious development time and resources away from the new game to support the old one.

Maybe one or two games have done that but in all of gaming history it’s pretty rare to see a developer spend time making DLC, further causing attachment to that game, while working on a sequel. The last thing any developer would want to do is make people more attached to an older game instead of enticing them to a new game. “I just spent of 40 dollars on DLC and you just released a sequal?” Why would that person want to move on to the next game after spending that money on an older game with a cool costume, a favorite stage, and more to a sequel game that doesn’t have those DLC?

This generation of consoles will be a long one.

This is not true, at least in my case; I’m fully aware that the scenario we’re talking about IG and MS would also be working on a KI 4*. But if they’re going to do balance changes (which, I absolutely believe a fighter needs for a little while after main development ends) they would do well to continue supporting with content as well. Making accessories and colors (IMO) is a much less dev-intensive process than doing game modes, characters, stages, etc; they could have a small team working on these items for a while during the main development (creating the engine, art style, character concepts/rigs etc) because these artists might not be needed right away.

I think this happens a LOT more than you think; look at games like the Fallout and Elder Scrolls series by Bethesda.

It’s been stated many times by the company that development of one game started before development of DLC started for the one before; for example Skyrim’s development began after either Fallout or Fallout: New Vegas was completed, and the DLC for the Fallout title hadn’t been designed yet.

I agree with these both but we have both seen that KI is not Fallout or Skyrim. Yes it’s a much less dev-intensive process but again, holiday accessories haven’t even come back since the first year of KI. We have been asking for new costumes or holiday accessories for a while and it hasn’t happened.

Sure Bethesda can afford to make two games at once but I don’t think IG has that luxury unlike Bethesda which know since day 1 that their games and DLC will be making a ton of money. Not to mention they have a similar model to seasons called “Season Passes” which would mean going back to Seasons for KI.

That would honestly hype me up the most! I would love to see a season where the developers get to go wild with there characters and do anything they want.

My dream is for Season 3 (or season 4) to be the final full season , but for the game to be updated and supported throughout Xbox One’s life, adding things like new characters, modes, ultimates, classic stages. Stuff like that.

I don’t know what the priority IG has for things like holiday costumes/ accessories back then but I think the argument could be made that they decided to focus on charecters and etc. instead of more holiday costumes.

Now with far less work on their hands charecter, wise and etc. I could easily see a small group of people separate from the main group working on smaller content, nothing as big as a multiple charecters but quality of life things like those holiday skins. A kan ra with a leprechaun hat shouldn’t take isn’t so big a task that it needs the entire animation department to create.

What do you mean less characters? It’s the same amount minus the bonus character that helped give them more time for the rest.

How would that even work when they would be making a new game and making every character from scratch. There is no way they would have time to focus on this KI if they were to make a sequal.

Hopefully the second option. I believe they want KI to remain relevant going forward. Microsoft would not have brought the series back if they didn’t believe in it’s potential. The game will have nearly 30 well-balanced characters with the Season 3 addition! Besides, Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat have been in existence for the last two decades, its time for new competition. Continuous investment in public awareness in all forms will help the game to be exposed to many more people.

The way Microsoft is talking with the union of PC and console for cross-gameplay, I think KI is here to stay. I’ve said it many times before, Ken Lobb himself said in E3 2013 interview that he would like to see the game evolve over the life of the Xbox One. Microsoft ultimately decides what will happen. They’ve already gone beyond that with the merge announcement. We shall see.

i hope next killer instinct reboot bring no mercy and old shadow move effects..

  1. Season 4 is announced half a year later.
  2. Continued support with smaller DLC items like costumes.
  3. Continued support for bugs but no more content releases.
  4. A followup game after a couple of years.
  5. Nothing, the game dies off again.

I don’t think season 3 will be the end though, this game is built as a platform to release content it would be foolish to stop producing content for KI.

With the botched launch, and continuing bad press, of SFV…MS/IG would be foolish not to ENSURE the growth of the KI community with content and incentives. I don’t see this awesome game dying out. And we’ll see it again next gen too.

Just out of curiosity, did you mean to type “botched launch and continuing bad press of SFV”?

Initially, I thought you were saying the Season 3 launch has been going poorly and getting bad press, and I was very confused by the remainder of your post!

Assuming that’s correct, I agree with you - I think we’ll see lots more KI stuff to come, especially with the KI World Cup, increased tournament support, and the recent news about hitting 6 million unique players.

Yep. Corrected it.

I just wanted to make sure I understood exactly what you meant.

It’s a good time to be a KI fan, I believe!

after season 3 I don’t expect another season to be as big as the previous. I’m thinking smaller scale because we’re already at 16 fighters (18 counting shago and omen) and this season is likely to have at least 8 making it 24. Which is a LOT of characters, a 32 character cast is nice an all but then we start having an issue with balance. An I can honestly say that KI is one of the most if not THE most balanced fighting games out there.

I could see season 4 being an update to mechanics if things come out during season 3 that need to be fixed. Or perhaps additional features in season 4. If season 4 is a thing I imagine not many characters would be added. I’d be okay with a season 4 featuring perhaps only four characters. Then improve upon what they already have. I really don’t see another year of 8 characters an a game update. Let the game settle don’t over saturate and we wait perhaps a couple years (from the launch of season 3) an then announce KI2 new characters, updates to older characters like an older Jago or something to that effect. The story moves on or something an a new batch of fighters appear. Giving IG room to create completely unique characters an not have to go back to the old. Or maybe not! who knows really.

Season 3 makes 26 characters.

counting shago an omen which don’t necessarily come with season one or two. but yea 26 in total

Yeah, I really hope they continue support for the game. My gut defintely tells me that there won’t be a season 4. After season 3 wraps, I imagine we’ll see a community fund or two for Maybee a character or stage or something like that. Other than that I see Maybee balance tweaks and stuff like that for a while then I personally think it’ll be done.
