I want to buy this game. But the price is too much for me.
All things considered, with the color customization IMHO the whole Violent Ken=racist thing is really a non-issue. I mean if you want you can make him albino-white, Marvin the Martian black, or even every shade of skin color of DBZ’s Ginyu force. Personally right now I’ve got his custom color set to just look like regular Ken.
Ok, after playing it a bit more…I’m starting to see flaws in the control options. There’s just not a good control option. The analog feels smooth at first, but diagonals are an issue…I was dropping a lot of blocks while ducking. Using the buttons on the left joycon is more precise, but…well it’s hard to explain but I ended up dropping commands for different reasons, plus you have to hold the Switch in a awkard position to play like that. And forget about any complicated commands like Vega’s Super Combo. I think I’ve setled on using an 8bitdo 30 pro controller. It’s got a classic nintendo-esque D-pad on it, and seems to work better, but even it’s not perfect. I don’t have a switch pro controller so I can’t comment on it.
can’t really say i agree. having a character customizer in a game doesn’t really relieve it from allegations of racism, or at the very least, insensitivity based on colorism. in fact, i would say that a lot of developers use character creators as an excuse to not include a mainline character who is actually of color, or just creating a protagonist that is of color.
& yes, it’s a very real trope that “evil” characters have dark skin. and no, it’s not cool and yes it is a REAL issue. maybe not an “important” one to y’all, but that’s because y’all are looking at it from a surface level, and on a “personal” level, without considering the fact that there is systemic and real oppression that is hurled towards people simply just for having dark skin. (additionally, most of you aren’t people of color which means that your perspective on what is and isn’t racism will always be flawed, and those of you that are seem to have some very questionable perspectives on what racism actually is, which is honestly a little concerning.)
in media, dark skin is synonymous with “evil”, “humor”, and jokes. light skin is synonymous with purity, and “heroes” and being taken seriously. & yes you COULD argue that there are plenty of villians with light skin, or people whos skin become lighter when they become evil, but it’s not enough… and also, you can’t use that argument, because white people and people with light skin are not systemically oppressed enough for it to count as “racism against white people.”
in order for something to be racist, there needs to be a power imbalance. in this case, i would argue that yes, it is frankly a little offensive that companies like Capcom continue time and time again to associate the “evil” versions of characters with dark skin. it’s really not cool. and Capcom isn’t the only one guilty, this is still a pretty big issue in Japan particularly (but for sure in other countries too especially America).
similarly, being called names and attacked for “being white” isn’t racism. it may be prejudiced, but it is not racism, because white people are the people with the most power and influence in society. not just in America, but all over the world. why is it that, universally, wherever you go, people with dark skin are demonized and attacked? also, it’s not like people, especially folks of color, don’t have plenty of reasons to be wary of white people, especially when we’re right in the middle of a global surge of fascism and white nationalism, happening quite literally on our doorsteps in some cases. we can’t just pretend everything is fine and dandy and all skin colors and races are treated equally now – you’d be lying to yourself if you said that. we even have statistics to prove otherwise.
Violent Ken isn’t always dark-skinned (nor is his hair consistent either). It depends on the artist at the time, I think.
I don’t really think it’s a big deal. I get how people see the trends and draw the associations, but at the same time I have doubts they genuinely have an effect on people (we’re in pretty subjective, subconscious territory here), especially in today’s society which has come a long way in balancing out those kinds of tropes.
This is an incredibly racist statement and it’s incredibly offensive to me. I have to say I have never been as enraged reading anything on these forums. The addition of global “power dynamics” to the definition of racism is an absurdity in and of itself, and it’s denialism of the reality of individuals and their power disparity. As if in every interaction taking place everywhere in the world between a white person and any person of color the white person always has more power. When I am in China or Japan and being hassled by the authorities for not being of the local race this is not racism, because I am white and by definition white people cannot be the subject of racism? Please DM me with your explanation of how when a gang of youths of color attack and torture a white person because he is white and therefore not deserving of human dignity and record it in video for hours that’s not racist. When people make generalizations about white people that’s not racism by definition? These are expressions of a belief that white people, collectively, are evil and therefore deserving of abuse. Regardless of the source of those beliefs. The whole concept that one race of people can’t possibly be the subject of racism is discriminatory based on race. I’m a bit flabbergasted that people hold these views and also a bit challenged as to why this kind of blatantly racist statement doesn’t make you subject to a 200 year ban.
From dictionary.com:
Racism - a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human racial groups determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one’s own race is superior and has the right to dominate others or that a particular racial group is inferior to the others.
Notice no “except when the inferior group is white, in which case it doesn’t count.” Being viewed as evil and inherently bad may not seem to meet the definition of “inferior” to you but it does.
We can agree or disagree about whether evil Ken is racist, but I don’t see how you can substantiate a statement like this.
Have a read on this.
To summarize, humans fear the dark. We depend on sight the most so a lack of light makes us feel more vulnerable. Furthermore, since humans don’t see well in the dark, it is sometimes associated with deception. Deception is linked with evil. Darkness being evil has nothing to do with racism.
If you say that people of non color will always have a flawed perspective of racism is simply wrong. They do go through with racism. In fact, you are proving they do by saying white people have a flawed view on racism. If you want to say someone has a flawed view on racism, explain how instead of saying “you’re white so you have a flawed view on racism”. You can’t use that reasoning on someone who is an actual person of color.
Being attacked for just being white isn’t racism? How does that make any sense? Being attacked for being Asian isn’t racist? Being attacked for their race is racism. That will not change.
Ok
No. racism is simply bias against someone of another race… which is definitely in your post.
It isn’t racist for people to fear me because of my darks skin because people naturally fear dark things. OMG I never saw it this way before…
So has anyone else played it yet?
I never said that fearing someone because of ther skin wasn’t racist. I’m saying that the artistic choice of making an evil corrupted version of a character have darker skin isn’t because of racism. @WrathOfFulgore I would but it doesn’t seem worth it yet. I’ll wait for a sale.
I don’t think its intended to be racist, but it sorta tugs on racial insecurities. Though like I said earlier the bigger issue is with the actual black characters.
Violent Ken isn’t really racist. You can make a case on black characters with Dee Jay and Balrog but I can’t really see it with Violent Ken.
Not saying that Evil Ryu and Violent Ken is racist.
i should clarify that i don’t think Violent Ken & Evil Ryu are inherently racist, but it is obviously part of a long-running trope that itself feeds into racism.
i should have never said anything though, obviously. i’m not trying to start “debate club” here or whatever y’all think i’m doing, i’m just explaining the other side of the coin as someone who deals with racism/transphobia all the time, and who spends a lot of their time researching the structural inequalities of racism.
and again, racism and prejudiced behavior are not the same thing. yes, someone can be prejudiced against white people, but it is not racism. the “dictionary” definition for racism should not be the definition that you use, if anything you should use something that actually talks about the nuances of what “racism” and modern racism is in the year 2017.

again, i’m NOT TRYING to have a debate club, and if anything, it was obviously a mistake for me to respond to anything even slightly political on this forum with a hint of nuance or anything that might go against what you seem to believe about what racism means in this day and age. if you want to hear a more “realistic” definition of what racism is, ask any non-white people who work and get involved in racism-related cases for their definition on it. i’m sure you’ll hear the exact same thing that i’m saying.
i don’t remember saying this at all, but chances are that you are the least of their worries. would it be racism, though? i mean, kind of, but let’s also think about how this theoretical situation would go if you were not white.
black people endure an insane amount of racism in Japan, still, to this day, even going so far as to continuing to use those “black skin, big pink lips and cartoony eyes” portrayal of black people in public areas, making offhanded racist comments at and towards black people in public… etc. compared to what white people are portrayed as in Japan, which is… pretty normal and ordinary. maybe a white person’s jaw might be “too shapely” or something. maybe they might make fun of your “bad Japanese.” that’s pretty much the most of your worries.

how when a gang of youths of color attack and torture a white person because he is white and therefore not deserving of human dignity and record it in video for hours that’s not racist.
again, it is prejudice. not racism. i am not saying that being prejudiced against white people is a good thing, you’re all jumping to offended conclusions simply because i wanted to bring up a different point that isn’t just everyone in unison going “NAH IT’S NOT RACIST.”
prejudice is bad! you shouldn’t be prejudiced to anyone, including white people! but it is still not racism. that is all i am saying. if a gang of kids of color decides to ■■■■ with a white person minding their own business for no reason other than him being white, then it is prejudiced, and that is bad!!! i’m not saying “well HEH you deserved it for being WHITE” i’m just saying that what happened to you is a different bad thing than the bad thing that we are currently talking about, even if the two bad things are seemingly related and connected to each other.
racism is not a two-way street. prejudice is though. literally all i was trying to do was explain the difference between the two terms and offer insight on perhaps why this article or other people in general might say “hey, this thing with evil characters having dark skin seems kinda racist” before everyone decided to aggressively pile on me simply for trying to be involved in the conversation and help people understand another, more politically active, person’s point of view. but my bad on that, i’ll be sure to not do that in the future i guess since it seems to make everyone mad?

So,does anyone else have any opinions on the game itself?
