Hey @Infilament I was going through the Hisako page recently and noticed that your guide still says that she has the longest-range forward dash which is no longer the case since Shadow Jago came out.
I guess you’re about to update it soon anyway because of season 3 which is going to be a ton of work. But I wanted to make sure that even a small detail like that doesn’t get overlooked ![]()
Keep up the good work!
Great Guide, it helps alot.
Though the descriptions are good for each move, (from what I’ve read), The Killer Instinct Community Guide will be able to deliver the one thing that your guide is sadly lacking (which I’ve discussed with you outside of these forums): Readable inputs for those using assistive technology such as screen readers. But that’s fine, since it’s better to have 2 resources for the game than one. On that topic, if I wanted to take your move descriptions and use them directly in the guide, could I do so and credit you (descriptions taken from infil’s guide, for example, with a link - we could addjust those later and make them a little more personalised to the guide)?
I don’t know how to program my site to better work for screen readers… I have no idea how screen readers work, or why my site doesn’t work that well with them. If it’s a very easy change, and you know what I need to do, then I’m willing to do it, but if I have to rebuild the site architecture in some way then perhaps it’s best those people use your guide instead.
You’re welcome to use my move list descriptions; if you copy them verbatim then yes, please credit me. If you just read the descriptions and then reword what I say with your own flavor, then you don’t have to.
I’ll answer your post in reverse order.
First of all, thanks very much for allowing me to use your descriptions in one form or another, that’s very kind of you and can potentially make less of the workload for those who are writing for my guide, even if they’re just placeholders.
Second of all, it’s not your sight, not really (other than the multi-page system which needs a little work to make it clear whichsection you’re going to when you have those headings just before). As much as I’d be happy to sit down with you and talk you through exactly how to make things work (which isn’t that difficult), though it might sound like it), I think you’re right that my guide would be a better place to have that information. Once my guide is complete, hopefully our guides can be recommended side-by-side (since yours has the tools such as Shadow Breaker training and since mine will have completely readable movelists etc, so both offering different things that will be usefull to different audiences).
I wish you the best with getting everything prepared for S3.
The problem that @SightlessKombat is describing sounds like a lack of alt attributes in your image tags to textually describe the inputs depicted in the images.
I stumbled upon an article providing tips on how to make web content accessible for blind people (EDIT: ironically, Sightless can probably “see” that link better than we can!) when looking into this briefly. It mostly seems pretty basic and harmless, and certainly doesn’t seem to require any radical rebuilding or technology you’re unfamiliar with.
Not exactly. The idea that you’ve discussed implies that there’s an image showing up in the first place. HOwever, no such “graphic” labels are even voiced, thereby making it seem, at least, like there’s nothing there.
An example of this, taken from how NVDA reads the site, would be “Neck Cutter” “blank” “description” (the separated quotes indicate whre I’ve had to press down arrow to move to the next line).
I can add alt text to the arrows and punch/kick icons in my move list (“down”, “right”, etc), would that help @SightlessKombat?
Each move in my move list has a name, its input (given via graphical arrows and punch/kick icons), and a description below it. So if your screen reader isn’t telling you anything about the input, I guess alt tags would help there?
Hm, the structure of that part of the document (although it appears the move list is empty in the source and is loaded in by some javascript somewhere) is basically two div elements in sequence: the first div contains the text “Neck Cutter” followed by a span element containing the two input icon images; and the second div contains the description. If the lack of alt attributes isn’t the problem, I guess NVDA could be ignoring the span element?
I might look into getting NVDA and playing with it later to see if I can find out what’s up.
I did change a bunch of symbols to make a guide easier to read for streetfighter or MKX I think it was, so it could be the custom NVDA dictionary I am using that might be screwing with the formatting.
It actually could. Moreover, having that information (move input+alt text) would mean that I’d be able to just take it and alter it for my own guide, adding in things like frame data, strategies etc as need be.
I’d suggest adding a key and then using single/double letter notation (d, b, u, f and hp, mp, lp, hk, mk, lp) to make it less frustrating (unless people have their images set to say “graphic” at the same time, in which case it could be annoying). I@ll be happy to look at a few if you want to stick it in a test page to see if they workas expected. NVDA is freeware and open source and can be downloaded at the NVAccess page - you don’t have to donate when downloading
Hope that helps, though as i say there’d be a fair amount of typing really, so it might be better to just leave it to my guide to do this work from the ground up rather than giving you more to try and work with.
There isn’t a ton of typing; as @Fnrslvr says, I load it all in from Javascript so I only have to add the alt text in one place.
I just added title texts for the arrows and the punch/kick icons and pushed it to the server, see if that helps.
It worked. All that needs to be said. I’ll see what I can work on in terms of integrating with my guide - all that would need to be added is frame data etc. I do feel kind of bad just “leaching” off of your guide for my own, but considering the relative lack of people helping for the most part, it might just be the best way to get things done for the moment…
Thanks for putting this in. At least I can now recommend your guide with the certainty that (unless you’re using something that isn’t NVDA, JAWS or another screen reader capable of detecting graphics), the guide should be more accessible than before.
What is meant by “Name Change”?
It is now called “the complete killer instinct guide” instead of “killer instinct guide for sf4 players” or something along those lines.. Basically to not discourage readers who aren’t familiar with sf4 from reading the guide.
Yes, I used to say it was a guide that you should read if you are trying to learn KI after playing SF4, calling it a “Killer Instinct Guide for SFIV Players”. But now with SF5 being the primary Street Fighter game, and my guide changing a lot over the last year, it’s no longer an accurate title and I didn’t want people to think the guide wasn’t useful for them, so I changed the title.
you guide surely helped me ty =D
Hey, Infil. Check your PM.
Rukari recently linked to the ‘reaction’ section of the guide elsewhere in the forums, so I finally opened up the guide for the first time since you first released.
I feel sooo much smarter as a human being after reading just that one page. Thanks a lot for your hard work, good to see ms/ig treating it as Semi-Authorized KI guide. I look forward to browsing through it regularly when I finally get my hands on the PC version.
The first revision of my guide for Season 3 is now live!
I made changes to virtually every page (and the pages that aren’t changed yet are going to be soon). I have FULL character pages complete for Tusk and Arbiter (link here), with Kim Wu and Rash coming soon. History of Season 3 pages. Pages for all the new system mechanics (flipout, stagger, etc). All the new shadow linkers in the game (for all 4 new characters + all the old ones that changed, like Shadow Jago and Hisako’s new air ORZ).
I hope you all enjoy! Read up on the new KI while you wait for Season 3 to drop!
