The Complete Killer Instinct Guide (ki.infil.net) [All post-S3 chars added!]

I need a translation of this topic called:

A Killer Instinct Guide for MK9 Players Who Were Only Good Specifically When Playing Local Games Against Friends Who Button Mashed And Know Nothing About Fighting Game Terminology

@MBABanemobius: Thanks, I added your link overtop the old one. I’ll probably go back and add the +2 thing for Omen during the S3 rework of the guide.

@Fwufikins: Interesting idea, but it’s a lot of space and work to compile. I’ll give it some thought when I have to do some readjusting of things for S3.

Also want to say that I’m making a somewhat big change to my guide… the title! Once the focus of my guide sort of moved away from teaching SFIV players about the game, I never really liked the old title of ā€œA KI Guide for SFIV playersā€, partially because it probably scared away people from reading it who didn’t play that game. Plus, with SFV on the horizon, it doesn’t make sense to trap myself like that, especially since many of SFIV’s rules (links, cancels, jump arcs, walk speeds, etc) will apply to SFV as well.

Anyway, I’m changing the title of the guide to ā€œThe Complete Killer Instinct Guideā€. It’s not the world’s best title but it’s quite a bit better than the old one.

I’m reworking the first few pages in my guide in my spare time over the next few days (I’ve redone basics and basics2 already), basically softening the references to SFIV without actually removing the information it was giving. So I’ll talk about ā€œmodern Street Fighter gamesā€ to cover both SFIV and SFV, move some SFIV-specific terminology into tooltips, etc. I also reworded a paragraph or two here and there as I take a more instructional tone, rather than expository tone. But the pages should convey pretty much all the same information they did before (maybe even a bit more, actually).

My goal is to have most of the pages done before KI World Cup, when some new people might be checking out my guide. We’ll see if I can finish in time!

I think it’s probably a good idea to keep some reference to SF as an example for certain fighting fame terms, but overall I definitely agree that it’d be best to look at your KI guide as its own entity for anyone who wants to get into the game. Good call.

Another new addition to my guide today.

Several people in this thread and over twitter have asked for a way to donate to my site, as a way to chip in for server costs, some late-night caffeine to help me crunch through a big update, or maybe some new equipment (like a capture card) to help streamline my process. I was always kind of hesitant to add it, because I’m bad at accepting people’s generosity (and also because initial research showed that there weren’t a lot of super good options for donating unless you were a registered non-profit organization).

Well, I figured out a way to accept donations without any risk (using the very recently launched paypal.me service), so I’ve gone ahead and added a Donate page to the site.

I definitely want to stress that the site will always be free to use, and donating is entirely optional. Please don’t feel any pressure to donate. But if donating to my project is something you’ve been interested in doing in the past, there is now a way for you to do that.

Even if you just read my guide and tell a friend, that’s still a super great way to support me, so thanks to everyone who has enjoyed my work over the past year.

Thank you for this option. Another nice cause for me to spend money. Never used such an option, I hope I can donate anonymously. Don’t want you to feel uncomfortable..

You use your Paypal account to donate, so I don’t think it will be anonymous in that sense (although maybe you can do it anonymously somehow? I’m not too sure). But since I don’t know anybody’s real name on the forums, I’m probably not going to be able to figure out who is donating.

Don’t worry about me feeling uncomfortable. I just want to make sure that people know donating is optional and I still plan on updating my guide even if I get $0 in donations. But if some people really want to help support me in this specific way, I’ve found a way to do it that is hopefully pretty easy.

Different question. Is hitbox related general info or even character specific explanation useful for your guide..? Any thoughts?

I never fully grasped the in-game explanation on hitboxes, etc. Always felt that something was missing to get the full picture. All the rectangles and what to look for…

A lesson on hitboxes/the priority system is something my guide should probably have, yeah. It’s probably not in the cards before S3 launches, but I’ll put it on the to-do list for the future. :slightly_smiling:

Hitboxes are pretty straightforward, though. You want your giant red box to hit the opponent’s hollow box, and that’s pretty much it. Some boxes change color (green for projectiles, blue for throws), which means that they interact with your opponent’s hollow boxes slightly differently (if you don’t have a hollow blue box around your character, that means you are currently throw invincible), but the concept of hitboxes is basically just giant red box hitting opponent’s box.

This is exactly what I mean. The events that affect or alter hitboxes, priority, etc.
At times I fail to understand what causes a wakeup, or overhead to miss, get stuffed. Don’t get me wrong, what is a hitbox, is explained sufficiently in-game, but the interdependencies is where a guide adds value…

I think it might be best to at least still keep visual examples of differences and similarities, such as this, for instance:

https://fat.gfycat.com/AliveHeartfeltDunlin.webm

A visual frame of reference on similarities and differences may help the reader to connect the dots on why or how something is the way it is, or why it ISN’T exactly like the other thing.

Also, when you say ā€œStreet Fighterā€, it still might help to make a distinction in certain areas. A portion of the numbered games in the series don’t exactly play like each other. SFIV vs. SFV being a recent example.

For example, as partly outlined in the snippet above, throwing in SFV operates way more like KI than it does in SFIV. And on the other hand, like KI, SFIV has close-range/far normals, but SFV doesn’t, etc.

Yeah, I’m definitely not removing things like that neutral jumping throws video. I’ll just more carefully specify that it’s in relation to SFIV, instead of just assuming people will get the reference because of the title of the guide.

Also I’m definitely not convinced SFV throws are really that laggy… I think they used to be, but they slowly moved the recovery frames down. We’ll see in the final version but I think they will be a lot closer to SFIV throws than KI throws. I’ve already seen people try to jump to bait throws and get anti-aired after the throw recovered in a few different situations in the last beta.

But yes, good point on the close/far normals in SFV, I’ll make sure my guide isn’t misleading there.

Awesome guide! Certainly will help getting into the game, after the PC release.
Thanks alot !!!

Looks like there’s going to need to do some major adjustments to the guide. Lots of new features and a couple of reworked characters.

Also, @Infilament , I really liked the videos you and Sajam did for KI World Cup. Any chance that you and Steve will be doing more work together in the future?

Yeah I imagine every page of my guide will have to be changed in some way (as well as creating new pages), including re-shooting videos and stuff. It’ll be a lot of work.

I definitely enjoyed working with Sajam on those videos, there might be more in the future, who knows!

Did you get some certificate/award or something at the World Cup?

I did! I think they gave me a plaque for being a community leader of some sort (for my guide). I had no idea they were doing it, so I was pretty surprised.

Great. Congratulations!

I missed the awards part. So they gave you a shoutout or you attended in person and received your plaque?

I wasn’t able to be there in person unfortunately, so they just gave me a shoutout and showed my plaque on camera. They gave out several plaques to different people for their contributions to the scene, so I definitely wasn’t the only person to get one.

Just want to give a big shoutout to this amazing guide. Together with the ingame Dojo you can learn everything you need to know about Killer Instinct.
The award at KIWC and the shoutouts were definitley deserved.
Good work on the character mini series aswell.
I hope you keep up the good work to make the community grow.

Thanks!
