Taunting & Tea-bagging

I’m not a fan of bagging, and it irks me when someone does it thinking they’re hot ■■■■ when the health delta was minimal.

Taunting can be alright though, I usually intend to convey respect or excitement. If I’m playing as Riptor I might rapidly run back and forth after a win but it’s only ever intended as a bit of fun.

If I get the win after being bagged though, I just stand completely still to show it’s not even worth my time rising to it.

Doing one taunt is what makes it good. When people try to spam the taunt button over and over it just ruins it. There’s nothing good from it.

Beautifully put. This is the best post on the matter I’ve ever seen.

It would be the easiest thing in the world to fix - just disable crouching when a lifebar ends (no more teabagging) and allow for breaks on anything that’s not part of the Ultra (no more infinity Ultras). Any further Ultra attempts go directly to Ender, and with the survivor having one pip of health the match will be over before the third ultra would have ended anyway. Add a respect taunt to remove any doubt as to the intentions of your opponent and this problem is solved.

There are no reasons to oppose these changes that don’t involve admitting you are a poor sport who gets your rocks off by taunting strangers. However, @rukizzel’s response indicates why this has been a nonstarter for three years and will continue to be so: the people who are involved with designing and making the game, who have made otherwise admirable decisions like updating Thunder and giving dignity to the female characters, think it’s funny to rub their scrotums on opponents and spend a minute and thirty seconds flogging a corpse. They don’t care about our opinion on this matter, and have made it clear by their inaction, failure to address the issue on the forums and allocation of resources elsewhere. They are willing to sacrifice online participation and business to keep these behaviors in the game, so we can either grit our teeth or stop playing. That’s it.

People that don’t like taunting and bagging are babies? Is that what you’re trying to get across here?

Taunting is part of fighting…been like that for eons.

Not from my experience. When I was playing in arcades a long time ago, that stuff just didn’t happen.

Times change. And again taunting has been around for oens. It’s a mental aspect. Can coax predictable reactions and such.

It’s like I said with ARIA and Sadira. Their taunts work perfectly.

“You’re to slow.” “Unworthy.” Those are some nerve racking words. Enough to possibly have the opponent play differently.

I’m not sure why you felt the need to repeat your point. I’m just telling you my experience.

Though to be honest, I don’t mind the taunting so much. I just wish there was a way to say something positive as well. Not everyone likes that aspect of competitive play and not everyone is used to it.

Some think it’s strategy, some think it’s funny, and some are put off by it. That doesn’t make them babies, it just makes them people that don’t get enjoyment out of having their nose rubbed in it. Might they be a bit sensitive? Sure, possibly. It could be an overabundance of salt, but some people just really don’t find that lack of sportsmanship appealing, strategy or not. To each, his own. Which is why I’d think it’d be nice to serve all parties, if possible.

Not possible to appeal to everyone. Everyone needs to deal with hardships. Whatever that may be. Can’t be getting soft. Humans in general don’t like to be mocked. But that is something we have to deal with.

in an arcade setting, if you teabag the opponent you gotta remember he is standing next to you. its not like where we are now, in the comfort and safety of our homes. some people cannot handle loss and then when they are insulted, fists can fly. little billy will not dare teabag the guy next to him, especially if he is bigger, stronger, and looks like he can handle himself lol. you just do not do that because you dont know who you are fighting against.

in the online setting, anybody can teabag and taunt. have no respect for the opponent whatsoever because there are no consequences for it. im not advocating there be consequences for teabaggers and taunt spammers, we dole out the punishments ourselves when we beat the h ell out of them for their transgressions. but clearly, you can see a difference in attitude between live local play and the online venue

I dont think anyone here has an issue with taunting… its the tea bagging thats the issue.

I love to taunt… but TB not so much

TB is funny because you really can’t garner anger from someone with it. It really only works if someone is already really frustrated And in that time might as well taunt instead. Gets the same effect except it looks much better.

That clip is so HD!!!

It actually is possible to appeal to everyone, as I mentioned before with a respect taunt, and as far as hardships are concerned, playing something that’s meant to be fun, even in a casual competitive situation, shouldn’t have to fall in the “hardship” category in any way shape or form. I know that’s an idealized way of looking at things, but still.

It’s not even a matter of being soft. It’s a video game. Yes, most people can take losses, but not liking it when someone rubs your nose in it doesn’t make you soft. It makes the other person a poor sport.

To be clear, I’m not talking about taunting at all as far as sportsmanship is concerned. I’m talking about having a great match with someone and then they teabag you after the match for no other reason than to be jerk.

Thank you. THIS was the experience I had in the arcades. People respected each other. Yeah, there was some gamesmanship as far as taunting was concerned, but even that wasn’t over the top.

I mean, if we’re extending video game experience to life lessons here (for some reason), I think that it can be beneficial to have thicker skin when someone mocks you over the internet or trolls you or whatever. That’s important. But so is being respectful of others and smart enough to not anger the wrong people, especially over something that’s meant to be fun.

Nah, plenty of people (including several of the posters in this thread) think of them in the same terms. I consider most taunts every bit as disrespectful as teabagging, and some of them (Fulgore and Jago come to mind) quite a bit moreso.

I don’t get overly upset about either, but both are, in general, a form of disrespect. Unless you play Rash or Spinal, I’m probably going to stomp you into the dirt and full ultra you for doing a taunt against me.

Fair enough, if you want to play it like that, I can do it too. Remember the three rules:

1.) If you wouldn’t say it to the person’s face, you’re a coward for saying it online.
2.) If your actions would be unsafe in an arcade with a stranger, you’re a coward for doing them online.
3.) If you wouldn’t like to see your mother do it, you’re a pervert for wanting the female characters to do it.

For everything else, there’s Rule34 and Trump rallies.

A taunt isn’t respect…it’s not meant to be. And it can be fun. Varies from person to person. And it’s not idealized…it’s just reality.

You sound like some who has alot of pride and honour.

Well that’s just ridiculous… I get that the Jago taunt can be annoying…but its not near as disrespectful as Tea bagging.
If a taunt bothers you that bad then you need to relax man.

I’m curious to see how you feel about taunts like Glacius’, Thunder’s, Wulf’s, or Aganos’ - since those are nonverbal, and to me seem to be the least “aggressive.”

When I do decide to use taunts with Thunder, it’s a single taunt after taking a lifebar, and after standing up when having lost my first lifebar. I see it more as an acknowledgement of the fight than an aggressive taunt, particularly with his “thank you for the battle” outro. I’m also less likely to taunt when fighting lower rank players than myself; since I currently have a Killer rank I don’t want to look like I’m punishing somebody from Bronze or Silver by taunting midmatch.

As you said, though, some of the taunts have a much more insulting tone built in, like Jago’s, Cinder’s, and Fulgore’s.
