Yes I do, because I pay for them. It’s not like I’ll have them for free. Why the hell shouldn’t I get them?
It’s good to reward loyal customers that played the game since day one, but not at the expense of your potential player base. To a degree, of course, you can nitpick endlessely about which things are ‘at the expense’ and which aren’t.
But gating gameplay for your future customers is mind-bogglingly stupid. Why are they forced to have lesser gameplay experience? Also, you deny yourself the profits of selling the character to those who don’t pick them over the course of the month. “We don’t need your money, go away!”
Cosmetics and other non-gameplay unlockables are all fair game, but this situation is bs territory.
Sadly, we don’t have access to the old forums and the reams of PC enthusiasts saying a port was easy and could be done in two weeks. And yes, multiple people made exactly that comment. When I pointed out that PC has myriad hardware variations they all called me an ■■■■■■■ console fanboy. So yeah.
Anyway, I’m not here to be IG’s spokesperson. You can be as cautious as you like. But you can’t have your cake and eat it too. If you want Shago, now is the time. Don’t cry foul that they aren’t releasing him on your schedule.
I’m probably more angry because it’s a ■■■■■■ move overall, not just because I’m affected. It’s so bad, I can’t think of any major game that ever did something like this. Makes you feel that you won’t enjoy the game as much as the others do.
Well, I’m at a loss to think of timed releases, but certainly there have been things like platform specific characters (e.g. Soul Calibur II and IV).
You have to remember KI is doing lots of things that haven’t been done before. There are plenty of people who are buying into the game one character at a time. So the idea that everyone is required to have access to all the available characters is already out the window.
But I think you are getting upset for no reason. I don’t think this will be the last chance to get Shago. They said the same thing about the community fund and now they are selling him again for two weeks (probably at a cheaper price). For all the reasons you mention I suspect they will make him available again. But probably not ever just as a permanent addition to the store. That would take away some of his mystique.
This is off topic, but some of what is motivating me is that I (and I suspect lots of others) bought in to season one with the understanding that we would be getting an incomplete, bug filled game. But I wanted to spend the money because I really wanted to see more KI. So now, hearing people complain about not having access to all the add ons because they want to make sure the port is of good quality rubs me the wrong way. They aren’t going to port KI to PC and then abandon it. Just like the X1 game it is going to launch and then be supported with patches and further development. If all the guys who clamored for a PC port sit back waiting for it to be perfect you have the very real potential to kill the game. If they are devoting serious resources to the PC port and no one buys it we will be lucky to see the end of Season 3. And then you are on complaining that it’s unfair you can’t buy Shago later. I know that’s all my own personal baggage, but just by way of explanation…
I can’t wait to win a match against a bronze player doing nothing but surged slides and divekicks.

WOW! WHOA! COOL! NEATO! AWESOME! KILLER! GODLIKE! SHADOW JAGO HYPE! GET HYPE! THE HYPE IS REAL! LET’S GO! EXTREME! CRAZY! INSANE! MONSTER! BEASTLY! HYPER! SUPREME VICTORY! ULTIMATE! ULTRA COMBO! ULTRA VICTORY! ULTRA! ULTIMATE COMBO!
The thing is, Andy, PC ports of console games have been actually really bad for the last year or so on the whole. And I’m not just talking about the controversy with Batman. IMO PC gamers are right to be skeptical of a good PC port, even if IG is doing it, and even if they’re committed to supporting it. For all we know, it could have outrageously high spec requirements and a ton of random video card problems (like, say… Just Cause 3 does, despite being a PC-first game). PC gamers are feeling really bitten over the last year especially, and I believe they’re right to wait on it.
Of course, I hope beyond all hope that the PC version of KI is spectacular. I hope it runs on medium-specced computers without trouble and just… works across all sorts of different hardware.
And IMO, not having Shago available for purchase when the PC version drops would be a very big mistake. There’s a difference between “you have to pay to get this content” (like buying the characters) vs “there is no way to own this content right now, maybe check back in 6 months I dunno”, meanwhile, half the install base is having lots of fun with the character and you just feel left out. And I don’t think buying him now (if you’re anticipating the PC release) is the answer. Tons of people will be picking up KI at launch who don’t even plan on it right now, because they are convinced it’s good by a friend or something. If it was just a skin, that’s one thing, but if it’s actual gameplay-related content, locking it away from people is just a bad idea IMO.
Actually, the real problem is how they handle it. I mean, the more news they share regarding the port during these months, the better. Even if it is simply: “we’re working hard, we’ve made progresses” is enough to create a good condition among the PC community. Apart the 90 fps lock, there aren’t any news regarding the PC port. There aren’t plans for beta tests, the requirements, nothing at all.
Bugs? No problem, they can be fixed. But another matter is having bugs because game hasn’t been tested enough or at all. The impression, as I said in another post, is that the port is being done reluctantly for some reasons (past and present).
Don’t worry about Season 3: because you supported the game a lot and because IG cares a lot about you Xbox gamers, they’ll keep doing it. The maximum that can happen if things are going bad is to shut down the project for PC porting or the PC version.
PC gamers aren’t requiring a 100% perfect port, remember. Just a working one. The fact there might be future complains regarding the fake f2p marketing system is another matter and it isn’t related on this topic.
To be sincere, even this post isn’t cool for this thread, so I’ll close it now, not to coming back again.
I am silver is that low enough for you, sire
I’d play a set with you anytime man, but I’m not sure I can find the heart to spam you like that
Plus, you’d probably just block and Allegro me in the face-hole.
Just like the others said, people are not waiting for a perfect product. When KI was initially released, it was competent from a technical standpoint, perfectly playable. At this point, it is pretty safe to buy the game. Even if it ends after S1, you still got what you payed for, right?
Not so simple with ports. Plenty of times we get a terrible port with a lot of game-breaking bugs and glitches, poor optimization that are ignored over the course of months. The devs keep adding new content, but it’s useless, because the game runs poorly or doesn’t even run at all. And you are still charged the full price all the same.
Console gamers are probably used to having their games meeting their standards, put we are often screwed over, this is why many stopped pre-ordering alltogether, we are not guaranteed a playable product.
So this isn’t about having a perfect product or leeching off the early supports, we just want a playable game and we don’t always get that unfortunately.
I It’s a fair point. But it’s a bit tough to tell people “thanks for contributing to the Shadow Jago community fund. We have spent the half mil you gave us building out this character (mostly through buying KI gold you didn’t want or need) so now we are whacking him up in the Windows 10 store for $5 so anyone playing on PC can grab him at their leisure.” The subtext being “after all, these potential new players are way more important than those of you who have supported the game from the beginning and we don’t want them to be annoyed at not having access to the 18th fully playable character that you bought two years ago and have waited two years (and spent money) to get your hands on. That might make them unhappy! So, the exclusive reward we promised you (twice) for giving us money is no longer exclusive in any way.” To be clear - I am not opposed to that in any way. For all I care they can give Shago away for free to anyone who downloads a demo of the PC version. But I don’t have any sympathy for people complaining that they don’t have a chance to get Shago. We are approaching chance number 3. If you are in these boards expressing your opinions and talking about the game you can probably kick over a few bucks to make sure you get Shago. As far as people who show up later to the PC version, they will have 17+ characters to learn. Unless he is God tier I think they can live without Shago until next Spring’s “buy Shago to support breast cancer awareness” special event. As far as the tournament scene, just ban him at tournaments. It wouldn’t be the first time that has happened.
The PC port rightly deserves a whole other thread. I’m not really convinced that the ports over the last year have been worse than in the past - although I admit to not being an expert. I have a competent gaming rig (i5 over clocked with a GTX 750) but I don’t do much with it. It runs the SFV beta flawlessly at 900p. At 1080 it’s unplayable. Should I be railing about a poorly optimized port? Why should SFV need 4gb of video ram!! My PC is more powerful than a PS4 (Yadda yadda)!! I see a lot of people complaining that games should work better on their hardware or that requirements are too steep and it’s tough for me to know if that’s really “a bad port” or if it’s just unrealistic expectations from people who spent $2k on a gaming rig and expect it to run games better than a $500 console. Broken is one thing, but even Arkham Knight is not broken for everyone and some people report that it works great with their setup. “Back in the day” this was just accepted as a fact of PC gaming life. That’s why lots of us left PC gaming to begin with. I have vivid memories of installing a CD ROM drive in order to play “The Seventh Guest” and then spending two hours trying to figure out why it didn’t run. When I read up on the subject I see people acting like its the end of the world if a game is locked at 30fps on PC. To me, that’s a whole different category than “bad, broken port.” It seems to me like far more problems are caused by developers trying desperately to keep their games from getting pirated than bad ports…
Coming from someone who preordered a $500 console that was surrounded in controversy and looked like it might flame out at launch just so I could fork over $40 to play KI plus picking up an Xbox live card I didn’t need to get Shago (and a $250 stick to work on the platform), I just don’t see it as a frightening risk to fork over a few dollars to get Shago even if you are not sure the PC port is going to meet expectations. You won’t have to buy new hardware or a new fightstick, after all. Am I being unreasonable? Maybe. I will let it go after this, but I just don’t see that it should be considered hugely problematic.
[edit] yikes! Sorry for the wall of text. Clearly I’m avoiding some work I don’t want to do…
To me, it’s “thanks for supporting the KI community fund! Your support directly got Shago’s development paid for! Here’s a code for your support. Now all the new players to the game can buy him for $5 like a regular character and we can all be happy.”
Eh… I dunno, man. It’s about the principle/image of the thing. These people will feel left out, even if they have no intention of playing Shago, and it will put a negative taste in their mouth towards the game. They’ll ask MS “why can’t you put Shago on sale for us?” and … what response can they give, besides “we don’t really want to right now”?
The tournament thing is a really tough one, because what are you going to tell Shago mains, or people who prepare Shago as a pocket character for a tough matchup? “Sorry, we didn’t have an Xbox One between December 15th and January 15th last year, so that means you’re screwed” isn’t a very satisfactory response. IG said on stream that they would provide Shago codes for tournaments both big and small, which is nice, but then why not just sell it if they’re willing to give away codes in this fashion? It’s like… “if you need Shago for a tournament, we’ll give him to you, otherwise tough luck”, and that’s a hard message to tell the consumer. Especially if the consumer has a chip on their shoulder towards MS for the last few years of Xbox press.
I dunno, I’m not a decision maker at MS, but I really don’t see the harm in just selling the character for $5 as a standalone. Maybe make him one of the bonuses if you buy S3 ultra edition, since there is no remastered version of KI3 to sell. Just something so that I don’t have to tell a new friend who joins the FGC 5 months from now, looking to branch out after SF5, “hey, KI is a great game you should try, but you won’t be able to buy all the characters.”
I see your point here. Time will tell us how the PC port will be and if they’re planning to let us know something before KI world cup.
Ah, btw, don’t worry for the wall of text. You still can’t beat me
Wall of text competition? I’m in there.
I’m sorry but if everyone acted so dismissive of future customers, such things as Kickstarter (which helped to fund and create many beautiful games) wouldn’t exist. If you look at successful projects, most of them offer only OSTs, artbooks even to the biggest contributors, who offer hundreds of dollars. They don’t have gameplay exclusives and for a ■■■■ good reason. It ■■■■■■ people off big time. I’ve seen one game that offered an exclusive character variation, but they later changed it (after consulting with their backers) to a character skin, because they realized it’s unfair.
And now people who dropped 20 bucks and got value in return already (KI gold, Shago) while also helping out the tournament scene don’t want to share. That reminds me of Xbone purists who wanted all their games to be exclusive.
Is there a “just vague enough not to cause a stir” competition? I think I’d excel.
I’ll throw in my two cents on this issue. I’ll try to be as neutral as possible.
I have a feeling that the PC port will turn out Ok (possibly really good), because, firstly, the whole shebang with Arkham Knight should encourage IG to work extra hard to prove they can make a quality PC port. Nothing encourages improvement quite like falling flat on your face.
Secondly, it’s not just an IG project; it’s also a big opportunity for good publicity for Microsoft. Phil Spencer made the announcement at the PC conference at E3. From the looks of things, MS wants (and at this stage in the “console wars”, they kinda need to) to win the hearts and minds of the PC community. There’s a lot more on the line for them than just 1 fighting game.
As far as Shago’s limited availability goes; I’m not a fan. I don’t necessarily have a personal issue with it since I have him, but I hate exclusive content in general. Timed exclusives, console exclusives, skins, maps, etc… It’s just annoying.
So, TL;DR- PC port will probably be fine. I just think Shago should be available for everyone at any time (after the Ultra edition thing is over, obviously)
You can’t sell people something “exclusive” and then turn around and make it freely available and expect people not to get upset. That has nothing to do with Xbox. As far as what people got in return - I got KI. So, as I said, I would be more than happy to see everyone get Shago for free. But just like you are speaking for all the presumably unhappy future customers, I can see the reaction from the current unhappy customers. Wishing it wasn’t so isn’t going to change it.
[edit] is it really “dismissive” of future customers to withhold 1/20th of the games content?
These articles, particularly the well written Kotaku article, make it pretty clear that the bug testing shortcuts made by WB and not the port itself are to blame.
