Scalebound officially cancelled

Gotta be honest, I’m not exactly shedding tears over this. I was interested in the game at first, but various previews sorta cooled that.

Microsoft historically has not seen returns from getting into the console market. From what I understand the 360 eventually eked out a profit, but they lost big on the OG xbox, and the numbers for the xbone are unclear because they’re burying them with 360 and surface sales. Even then, based on what we do know it’s safe to say they’re likely barely coming out net positive on cost to produce xbones vs what they’re selling at, but that doesn’t necessarily come out to being profitable due to the cost of R&D.

Winning at making lots of fun, unique games that will vie for my money, time and interest.

I couldn’t care less about console wars in the traditional fanboy sense.

They’re already doing that - just apparently not for you.

It’s tough to argue this as well. If Scalebound were a PlayStation exclusive it would never be cancelled. It would just quietly disappear. Deep Down was a game That piqued my curiosity and it just… vanished. Clearly it wasn’t canceled because of any friction between Sony and Capcom, who are as cozy as ever. And if MS had released a scheme like PlayStation Now to rent you your old games at outrageous prices and subject to all the perils of streaming content people would have lost their minds.

Nintendo is not better either. “Here is weird hardware that is basically only good for playing our games. We will release a new version of each of our stellar IPs about once every 5-7 years. One of these we will completely ■■■■■ up for no reason (ahem, Starfox).”

So, arguably MS is the best of a bad lot. I still feel that their online and chat services (even if they took a step backwards on Xone) are better than the others. And KI actually counts for a lot with me. But the primary advantage I’m now getting with the console is that my brother plays on it and it’s easy for my kids to get in and play. But my kids would be just as happy on 360 or PS3 (or iPad or 3DS or WiiU). So the huge library of Xbox One and 360 games I now have access to on the One is a good reason to keep it around. But what is my reason to expand my Xbox presence instead of focusing more on PC if all the interesting projects (Fable Legends, Scalebound) keep getting canned?

Well, I’ve always enjoyed my xbox, but they have always been a few steps behind in the games department. I think that is pretty much fact. With the cancellation of a few games they thinned out what they are offering (which was already a smaller offering then the ps4 has). And there are huge groups that are really starting to feel a lack in genres when it comes to their games on xbox, you might feel otherwise Geek, but if a lot of people are complaining about nothing in the line up being interesting to them, that is a problem. Because Xbox might do fine, but they still need to win new gamers and not lose them. I had Halo 5 (was a huge halo fan on the previous systems) but didnt play this one much, had it on my harddrive for ages, bit missed the splitscreen, didnt finish the campaign till 2 months ago I believe…then ended up deleting it because of the huge installsize. Same with gears, big fan, glad they got splitscreen, loved the campaign, but was a big horde fan, this one didnt do it for me, deleted it because if the huge size. Besides Killer Instinct, I dont believe I really have any Microsoft exclusives I am playing right now (Although I did play and love Quantum break last month), just this weekend started on Rise of the Tomb Raider, so that year exlusivity was of no use to me either. They are starting to look a bit like Nintendo with their focus on gimmicks (Kinect/Illumiroom/etc) and only banking on their big IP’s. Thing is, eventhough I havent had a Nintendo console since the N64, Nintendo’s IP’s are a lot more interesting to me now then the ones Microsoft has, and if they get third party support aswell…

The Playstation just has a huge catalogue of games and I dont even have to follow their news (I dont) to know it, I’m betting when it comes to big games its at least 3 times the size of what Microsoft has. Microsoft forgot to make their games into franchises like @Iago407 said. And Horizon Zero Dawn is a huge awesome looking game (a prehystoric game with huge technological dinosaurs). Where are those ‘quadruple A’ (they look rediculously awesome) titles for xbox? I’m mostly playing (and enjoying a diversity of (multiplatform) Indy games at the moment interspersed with KI and Skyrim. I’m actually not a big online! multiplayer gamer and I’m starting to feel I chose the wrong console. Now I’m not really interested in PLaystation, nor am I a pc gamer and I still might get a Scorpio, but they really need to nail it with the games this coming E3. Otherwise I will keep my One then the occasional game, but the Switch is looking mighty interesting at the moment and might win me over, especially since I have a kid and another on the way. And I would love to play Mariokart, Smash, etc with them.

Ok, my post is probably all over the place and dont mind my spelling, but that is the gist of it…

I have over 300+ Xbox One games. Trust me when I say that a shortage of games or lack of genres on the console is only a figment of your imagination - a myth perpetrated by PlayStation fanboys and those who actually believe in console wars. I won’t doubt there are more options on other platforms, but the Xbox is NOT lacking in any sense of the word.

Also, I looked into this Horizon game and am not impressed. Sure, it looks pretty (with frame-drops galore!), but the gameplay seems pretty basic and not really innovative (complete with canned, repetitive animations). Furthermore, I personally find the premise of a hunter taking on robot dinosaurs with nothing more than a bow and arrows, a spear, dagger, etc. too far-fetched. They don’t even seem as dangerous or as aggressive as the advertising would suggest.

This is exactly how I feel. Xbox has a great controller, online service and I like their interface more than others. But in the end its about games and I dont see any BIG ones that interest me in the foreseeable future… :pensive:

I think I’ve owned over then 500+ games on Xbox consoles, if we are playing the numbers game, I’d even dare say I probably played more on my consoles in my lifetime then you have, its only the last 2 years with me having kids that its slowed down a bit. Doesnt take away from the fact that truly exclusive games on the xbox are severely outclassed in nummer by playstation and most of those are outclassed by Nintendo in the quality department, and thats coming from me as a huge xbox fan. Just think about the consequences for your favorite console if even diehard fans are starting to doubt it…

300+ games on Xbox One only. I further have 300+ more on 360 and had hundreds on the OG Xbox as well.

I never cared for console exclusivity in general, although I do personally prefer those from MS. While it’s true that Sony may have more, only a few actually interest me (The Last of Us, Little Big Planet, and Nathan Drake).

As for Nintendo, I don’t believe they’ve had much in the way of quality for a long time.

Enjoy your Japanese consoles and games if you want, but I’m sticking with the western console and games. 'Merica!

Going on the games listed on wikipedia…

If you have 300 games, assuming you bought every game available on xbone and not PS4, about 150 of those are games you could have bought on the other platform. Take out games you could have bought on PC, even if you’re buying every single truly exclusive game for the platform, and it’s around 270 you could have bought elsewhere. Taking out the games from the list that I know are for kinect (and thus unwanted by many people) as well as games that I know are shovelware or are unreleased (which I didn’t do looking at the previous totals) there are twelve games on the xbox one that you can’t play on other platforms.

Factoring out VR-exclusive and unreleased games from the sony side and timed exclusives, the PS4 has 86 games you can’t play on other platforms.

I dunno man, I don’t have a stake in it, but the numbers really don’t lie.

I think taking out Kinect titles was a cheap shot and unwarranted. Many are actually pretty good - Fantasia Evolved, The Gunstringer, Fruit Ninja, Your Health and Fitness…

I loved the Kinect, never had issue with it, and hate that many games are taking it out - I can no longer use it to communicate in BF1, GoW4, H5G, etc. As a hearing-impaired individual who can’t use headphones with his hearing aides due to feedback noise (a shrill whistle). It’s like a double-handed slap to the ears.

Killer apps, indeed

I lost 30 lb. due to the latter over the course of 3 months. It was incredibly fun and motivating.

You may call them apps, but they’re simply smaller games, and there’s nothing wrong with that. As people’s time and attention spans grow smaller, so too do the games. Why do you think cellphone games are making a killing?

I dont see the point in the numbers game, its like comparing who has the bigger d***. That said I looked it up, I almost have 400 games I played on xbox one and its about double that for the 360, just to show you how much I enjoyed my xbox consoles and that your numbers dont mean anything in that more games played means that you are more right.

The point is there is a lot of grumbling about xbox this cycle, they started terrible publicitywise, I didnt care, I was looking forward to it, even imported the One, but I was aware of the bad name they were creating for themselves. Then they cancelled Fables which I was really looking forward to, since we do have a lack of exclusive non shooting/racing games on xbox that arent multiplatform (its something thats mentioned a lot on different forums, if there is a multitude of people sharing that opinion, than its a problem, eventhough you dont feel that way, because it means people that want more diversity might bail on xbox). It annoyed me greatly since fantasy/adventure is my favorite genre and I actually really like the beta, took turns playing it and KI for a long while. Then they basically dropped kinect, what do I have the ■■■■ thing for then…millions of dollars wasted that could have been spent on making games. Then they did lots of things right, crossplay, backward compatibility, play anywhere, etc and I felt hopeful that Phil realy was turning the console around. But there’s this nagging feeling that they still dont really know what they are doing or what they want, like this new cancellation. It just doesnt make me feel hopeful about the consoles future anymore. And I know one opinion doesnt matter. And your opinion is worth just as much and its yours and just as right and true for you. But the point is, my opinion isnt one in millions, there are more people starting to express doubt, which you saw in this forum, but which is also popping up all over other forums. Which means it IS a problem that could turn out detrimental for Microsoft if enough people start to act on it. If enough people say f*** it, I’ll get ps4 pro or a switch or go to pc, Microsoft might just throw in the towel, and that would be an issue for you aswell, so try not to think to lightly about it, just because you feel everything is dandy.

I havent bought another console or handheld since the original xbox released (had a nes, snes, genesis, n64 and playstation before then) so if I’m starting to look at other consoles now, then thats just not a good sign…

This I dont really understand, since I’m not one for nationalism, for example, if Japan wasnt so uptight about everything not asian, the xbox would be in a better place altogether aswell (more customers, more japanese games like the jrpg’s, Yakuza, etc…) And if everyone would talk about American products like you do about Asian ones, I’m pretty sure your markets wouldnt be great as a result.

Also, I’m Dutch and xbox isnt doing great here in Holland and in Europe in general its way behind Playstation. Actually, I am the only person in my direct friend circle who owns an xbox, everyone else is all over the Playstation or a Nintendo console/handheld.

You’re starting to sound like all of those people who think KI is on its last legs, but with Xbox instead, when nothing could be further from the truth. Frankly, I think this is just another case of negative people outscreaming everyone else, like usual. I think the majority of XBL users actually enjoy their console.

…and I don’t give a damn about whether a game is on both consoles. If it is, great! You can’t argue that as a crux. Just because it’s also on PS4 doesn’t automatically make it the better choice. I prefer the Xbox because it offers the exclusives I enjoy and enough multiplatform titles to warrant having it. The same can be said for those who prefer the PS4.

As for the numbers game, I only brought it up to show that I have experience with numerous games across genres on the platform that everyone says doesn’t have it.

I never said u did…thats an assumption. I also said your opinion is you own, and thats fine, you can think whatever you want. Doesnt mean I cant have a counter opinion

Multiplat game, 360 game, mobile game, and not a game?

Nobody’s telling you you can’t enjoy your purchase, but for many people the xbox one doesn’t offer enough for them to consider it over the PS4, or staying on PC.

Many people? This is an assumption. If there’s anything we learned last year, it’s that just because the Internet or the media says it’s true, it doesn’t mean that it is.

Sure some maybe, but I doubt it’s actually as many as you might think. Again, it’s more than likely just a very vocal minority.

In the end it doesn’t matter. Both consoles are purportedly doing well, and that’s good for the industry as a whole.

Many games have been shown and cancelled over the years, and not just the Xbox side of things. It’s a bit of a stretch to think a few games being canceled equals the doom of 1 console and the success of another. This kind of thing is not new and will not change things. It’s business as usual. It only affects you guys more profoundly now because you were looking forward to Scalebound.

Last year?

This should be common knowledge, to be honest.

Yeah, you’d think so, but that doesn’t appear to be the case, as it has made the news… People are consistently failing to check their sources and are taking things at face value.

It’s too bad for those of you who want it that the Scalebound cancellation isn’t fake news.
