Rocket League!

Ok. I’ll join. I’ll get my sis too, so we have another player. I’m new to Discord, so sorry if I’m a noob figuring it out. Lol

Click on the people icon in the very top left of the program, then go “add friend”

Same as username on the forums right? It’s telling me invalid format.

What’s your discord name? I’ll add you

Same as forum name.

Oh you also need the 4-digit number associated with your name

PM it to me (look at your username shown in the bottom left corner of the program, should have your name + a 4 digit number)

Continuing the discussion from the good games thread…

@Infilament, while I’m more than happy to discuss strategy with you, I’ve decided to NOT give you my Skype username or email on the basis that I, to be blunt, don’t want to play with you. Your skill far surpasses mine or anyone else’s that I know and I think I would feel more comfortable playing with others of similar skill where I think I actually stand a chance. While I could give it to you strictly for practice purposes, I think it won’t be necessary since you’re so good at explaining things to begin with (as evidenced by your guide).

If you don’t want to play with me, that’s fine.

But I’m not playing with you guys because I want high-level RL practice, because I have a huge network of friends for that. Nor do I expect you guys to play at a high-level, because you’re just starting out and the game is really hard. I was in your shoes not even a year ago, so I know what to expect. I’m playing with you guys because it’s fun (I hope!) for everyone involved. I don’t care about wins and losses and I’m not trying to embarrass anybody. In fact, I was trying to set you guys up for fun shots on my own goal in almost all matches we played. I want you guys to get better, so I’m putting you guys in the occasional difficult situation to see how you handle it, and to get some practice. If you don’t know how to handle some of my offense, ask! I’ll tell you what to work on.

You’re worried too much about winning, about having the most points, about what your teammates are doing, etc. Nobody else in the game cared about any of those things, we were just trying to hit a ball around for some fun times.

Your strategy of trying to ram me was a good one (although I was being pretty elusive so it wasn’t too effective), but it’s difficult when a successful ram doesn’t lead to anything. The main thing I would work on is just making solid contact with the ball and hitting it at a decent velocity in any direction… doesn’t even have to be on net to start. Most of the time when I took myself out of the play to see how you guys would handle it, you guys weren’t able to move the ball towards the net reliably. So rather than discuss elaborate team plays, I think this should be your first priority.

I can give more specific advice if you like.

That’s ok. More butt kicking from Infil for me. Lol.

I had a blast Infil. Lol I learned so much from Rocket League from you. I have looked up Tutorials and such, (one in particular I can’t remember the name, but it features Kronovi butchered spelling) but I had to put that into practice when playing against you. I was so excited when I successfully was able to block you in the air, or successfully block a shot from you. It let me know that I am learning, and that I will get better in time.

I just need to work on aiming more reliably, so that I can possibly score more goals.

Well considering I had absolutely no way to communicate with anybody but Ostrich’s sister, how exactly am I supposed to coordinate with them? I know how to setup a lot of shots, but I can’t do that without being able to communicate that to the other players. For example, I know that if I’m lined up with the ball at the start, I can hit it full-speed and have it bounce off the top rim of the goal and will have to hit it again - but if I can’t tell the other players to get you out of the way 1st, it doesn’t do me any good, because as evidenced in-game every time I tried it, you were there to block it.

Furthermore, I know about how to predict where a ball is going based on the velocity and direction it hits the wall, but I can’t do anything about that if I keep getting rammed off course by a teammate who also decides they want the ball. Getting hit by opposing players I understand, but teammates - that just erks me to no end, regardless of who it is. It’s my biggest pet-peeve in this game.

Ostrich, for future reference - how old is your sister? Is she a child, a teenager, a young adult, a full-grown adult? What? She obviously never communicated with me, which would’ve been a huge benefit to me if she had.

Well, for starters, you aren’t ever going to be able to wait 5 seconds for someone to drive all the way down from the kickoff to try to disrupt me while you wait to shoot. I was letting you guys take some kickoffs so that the ball would be in my end to start. Don’t worry about the outcome (me saving shots), because I’m probably going to save pretty much every shot, even 3 on 1, against you guys. What you should worry about is making solid contact. I tended to give you guys a Nice Shot if you struck the ball well and it probably would have gone in against other players at your rank. Plus, sometimes I will intentionally kick a hard ball in front of my net to see if somebody is there to get a rebound.

Yes, sometimes you’ll get rammed, but I’d say you probably got rammed only about 15-20% of the time you were trying to shoot. The rest of the time, you could practice making better contact with the ball.

Did you see how I took shots? If I made contact with the ball and wanted to send it flying, it almost always went all the way across the stadium without touching the floor. That takes some practice and you shouldn’t expect to do it regularly at first, but it’s what you should be working towards. Some tips: the hood your car impacts more speed on the ball than any other part. This means if the ball is traveling towards you (as opposed to away from you), even if you don’t front flip into the ball, just boosting and jumping at the last second so your hood touches the center of the ball will get you very good velocity. If you don’t jump, you’ll still get good velocity but you’ll prop the ball upwards for for a big lob. Sometimes this is good too.

Boost is absolutely everything in this game. I know you guys weren’t getting much boost, because I never had to worry about a full boost canister not being there. Basically, if you don’t have boost, and the ball is not in danger of going in your own net, you stop whatever you’re doing and go get boost. If you’re driving back on defense, don’t drive in the center of the map (unless you have to, to stop a goal), instead drive on the sides and pick up a big boost. If you want to make my life absolutely miserable on defense, try to starve me of the two corner boosts that are near my goal. I need those to defend.

If you need to get to max speed from a standstill quickly, use a little bit of boost (maybe about 30 or so, not even half of it), then start front flipping (hold forward and hit A twice). Front flipping is the best way to get to max speed, even if you have boost, because then when you’re at max speed, you have boost to actually do something productive (like, drive into the ball, or jump to make a save). The reason I’m always able to impart good speed on the ball whenever I hit it is because I am almost always at max speed, and I almost always have 100 boost. Basically, if you’re not at max speed already, you should be front flipping repeatedly to move, using small spurts of boost in between your front flips (and at the start) to get your momentum up. The worst thing to do is just hold boost from a standstill, because you will reach max speed but have 0 boost left when you do reach the ball, and if you need to slow down slightly or adjust your angle, you will lose a lot of your speed and have no boost to get it back.

These are things you can work on even if your teammates are constantly ramming you. You need to make sure boost is a core, central part of your gameplan, because you can do nothing without boost in this game. And you should be doing more “small boost + front flip” to get yourself started from a near standstill to max speed quickly.

Next time we play, we can talk on skype and I’ll show you what this looks like using RL’s online training mode, if you want. I dunno how much you plan to play this game, but the stuff I’m suggesting is not 100 hours of practice, it’s just small things you can work into your game that will make you 5x better in just 30 minutes of play time.

I didn’t know the front-flip provided a speed-boost (although in hindsight, I should’ve since I did know it propelled you forward) until I saw you constantly doing it last night as you drove past me. I started to ask myself “why is he doing that?” I knew it wasn’t just because you were showing off either. It as at that point that I figured it out on my own. What really erks me now, more than anything, especially now that you bring it up, is that despite figuring this out, I never bothered to use it or even test it to see if it was true.

I kind of knew about the hood thing too - 1 thing I have practiced is hitting the ball with different parts of the car. For example, I knew hitting the ball with the bottom and back of your car isn’t very effective, which is why I often use that part of the car to block the ball - I know it’ll slow it down and give me more control of the ball. I can’t even begin to tell you how many times I tried to block your shots doing this.

As for last night, I didn’t fully realize early on that you were letting us practice (as evidenced by my own frustration) - this, of course, could’ve been alleviated if someone would’ve been communicating with me. I did know, after a time, that you weren’t playing to your full potential, however, because we started to get certain shots in, as you just kinda sat there, so I was piecing it together over time. Overall, though, I thought it was supposed to be a trial by fire or sink or swim kind of thing. Besides, prior to the match, I recall you saying how you wanted to see how you did on your own against everybody else - which is exactly what happened.

Finally, if I play with you and @TheNinjaOstrich next time, I want @RGLOfficial to be there. I don’t want to do it without him. I know he’d appreciate learning some of this stuff too, and I like the idea of having somebody with me that I already have some semblance of coordination with.

I have to get ready for work; I’ll talk more about this later.

I’ll be there. I got home from work last night and after 15 minutes of Dark Souls, I fell asleep. Today is my day off so I shouldn’t be as tired if anyone wants to play RL.

I’d be down if Infil wants to play again. I need to get better. Lol I’d never thought I’d have so much fun getting bodied by a one-man army.

I’m in, but we’re using Skype this time. Everybody should have it 'cause XBL…

I’ll PM my info once this is set in stone.

I’ll play later tonight, but it will probably be closer to 9-9:30 EST this time.

Where’s the fun in forcing you guys to sink or swim? I want you guys to get better. I will match my level of play to how you guys are doing and help you improve, not just score 10 goals on you every match because I feel like it. Nobody learns anything when that happens, and nobody has fun.

Oh, really!? 'Cause it felt awfully like the latter to me last night. You beat us over, and over, and over again, in a 3v1. I don’t know about you, but if that’s you holding back, then that genuinely scares me. In all my time playing the game (a couple of months now), I have NEVER seen ANYONE as good as you. I’m guessing that’s because of the game’s matchmaking system, and if so, I’m grateful for having it.

I dunno what I’m supposed to say, lol.

I’m just trying to make sure everybody has fun, and everybody improves. You seem very focused on winning games, Geek. I want to really encourage you to drop that notion and instead measure your enjoyment based on how much better you think you got over the course of a session. If by the end of a night you are doing things you weren’t doing at the start of the night, then that is where you will be having fun. Then, you can take your newfound skills into ranked mode with RGL and beat some teams up.

Please don’t worry about who is winning and who is losing. As you guys improve, I will continue to increase my resistance and keep the games competitive and fun.

As I’ve said before, in the grand scheme of the Rocket League universe, I am a bad player. There are hundreds of players orders of magnitude better than me, and I’ve played teams where my friends and I (who are about as good as me) basically couldn’t touch the ball. But to people who are just starting out in the game, I will probably seem pretty good. Rocket League is a really interesting game that way, because there are so many fun, interesting skills that you build up over time that you don’t even know about at the start. The reason I seem so good to you is because I am doing things you probably haven’t considered (that I didn’t consider when I started either, and learned over the course of months of play by losing to better players). As you play more, you just have more and more fun and get better and better, but it only works if you forget winning and losing and just have fun by measuring how much better YOU get, as a player, between games.

On the contrary - a lot of the things you’ve been doing are things I have considered. I just haven’t taken the time (or had a lot of time) to put a lot of it into practice yet. For example, the lines alongside the stage you use to get more boost. I’ve thought of it, but hadn’t worked out the best lines yet.

As for winning, I’ve always said that having fun is what’s important, not winning (although winning often helps towards having fun). The thing is, though, I don’t know many people who like to lose over and over and over again - and that’s basically what was happening last night. Now if it was all in good fun and only for practice, that’s fine - but somebody forgot to make sure I got the memo last night that would’ve said as much.

In any case, my friend @GodtierMacho has offered to join us tonight, although I don’t think he’ll be using Skype.
