Primal Rage

I… don’t know abemulating harryhausen. Like… hot take I know, but I don’t think even Harryhausen would look like harryhausen if he had had modern tech and in comparison his work just… doesn’t look all that good compared to what we can do with modern tech. And while a general claymation aesthetic can be beautiful, I think it would take away from a game about giant monsters killing each other. No. I think a graphical style similar to… well… NRS’s other games is the best option to go with.

Also… aren’t their like… completed ROMs of PR2 floating around online?

They are test versions that have a lot of bugs and the game is clearly not finished, but it’s more complete than you would expect for a cancelled game. The characters appear to be all or mostly there and animated. You can play it in emulation if your Google fu is good enough. There’s only one cabinet in existence at Galloping Ghost in Illinois.

As far as Harryhausen, he was cutting edge so he would probably be doing cutting edge things. But if that’s the case, why does ArcSys bother to take such pains to make their 3D fighters look like Anime? Hand drawn is old, less efficient and arguably not as good looking. But people still like it.

You could make a PR game without that visual style. But I think Laika shows there’s still interest in the art form and people still enjoy watching it. I also think most of PR’s appeal was visual spectacle. It certainly wasn’t spectacular gameplay. In the modern context I’m not sure ultra realistic or cartoony 3D dinosaurs are going to capture the same sort of attention. But I’d be happy to see anyone do anything with the property.

Well, the hand drawn aesthetic still looks good. But that old primitive stop motion with the jerky frame rate and unrealistic movements (but not unrealistic in a good way) just does not. There’s a huge difference between something like a Laika or Aardman production and old Ray Harryhausen stuff. Great movies to be sure, but they have not aged well at all in the same way things like old golden age hand drawn animation has.

As someone who strives to make monsters in 3D (My favorite subject) I can appreciate what harry hausen has contributed to the monster genre.

honestly you could go one way or the other and I wouldn’t make that big of a deal.

Honestly, I’m not going to argue about “what looks good.” I’d be very happy to see anyone revive this franchise at all.

Indeed. He is one of the fathers of special effects - without him along with Willis O’Brien, we’d never have characters and movies like Godzilla.

Same here.

You and me both.

Same.

As long as they leave out the human avatars as playable characters.

Amen to that.

Idk. I thought it was a cool idea.

I’m sure some do and they are free to have that opinion. I just felt Primal Rage having primal beasts and dinosaurs made it stand out from most fighting games. Plus with more new creatures discovered we could always make new ones with based on those beasts. We can even make hybrids like they did Armadon and Vertigo.

What if avatars worked like assist Pokémon in Pokkén, where you pick one to give you a support ability once you build up a meter. They would still be human sized, but it would be like… your worshipers granting you power through prayer.

I can see that. But while I don’t think the human avatars should be playable I can acknowledge their importance to the story. if I was making the game, I’d make them narrate the story of the chosen god.

Plus that most fighting games have you play as mostly humans or only humans

But that’s just my opinion. If you like the human avatars power to you.

LOL I can’t help having an image of Sauron throwing a pokeball and summoning his avatar that way. XD
I like the idea of worshippers granting power through prayer. I actually mentioned an idea of different kinds of worshippers that would have offensive and defensive options.

The best way to balance that out is to also give you the ability to eat the opposing avatars.

Beautiful work! The detailing so far is really cool. I’m surprised to see some of the inner organs. Is this typical with regards to 3d modeling in general, or is this more specific to Necrosan? I look forward to seeing this in its entirety when it’s complete.

Yeah it sonly necrosan.

Ahh, I see. Thank you for clarifying.

I came across this beautiful piece of Diablo:

I love the charred fleshy look of this design with the glowing mouth.

That’s a cool design. if I was making a Primal rage reboot I would had something like a fire elemental to his costume as a special alt.
