yeah he’s also got the reptilians scales as well. So I gotta wonder what exactly is the whole thing with Khan. what even is he?
If that does end up being the case, It really makes me wonder what NRS’s beef is with triple downing on this decision, when the general response from fans was clearly negative based on how they treated her.
Im not a Sindel fanatic myself, but even as an outsider looking in, I gotta ask… why do her so dirty?
I mean Mileena fans sent death threats and blasted Ed Boon 24/7, yet for the most part they ended up getting rewarded. Meanwhile Sindel players who had legit criticisms about what NRS did, just get ignored, and are basically told to… "Deal With It bro. She was always evil. Now stop crying. "
IDK, to me It almost comes off a bit childish tbh, like very petty behavior to help justify their decisions in changing something that really didn’t need to be altered in the first place. Least in MK11’s case especially, as that was supposed to be the original timeline Sindel.
Kinda goes back to my rant about the bait and switching of Dark Raiden in MK11, just because they’re “Subverting Expectations” doesn’t nescisarly mean its a good idea for the story in the long-term, especially when it conflicts with previously established lore. Guess that goes with the territory by rebooting everything twice.
Thats just my two cents on the matter.
I could have sworn Shao Kahn was originally assigned to protect Outworld by the Elder Gods and then got power hungry, killed Onaga, and started conquering other realms. So essentially he WAS Outworld’s Raiden.
Also it only recently occurred to me that Liu Kang and Raiden basically did a personality swap in MK1 and that makes me realize it’s not as clever or interesting as they might think.
Look I know people are tired of reboots with this franchise and want a stable continuity to follow but I kind of hope the game ends with Liu Kang’s timeline crumbling around him and everything resetting to something like the original status quo, and then this game can just be a weird Elseworlds story or something instead of the new cannon going forward.
He was, but there was also stuff about how Outworld was dying and becoming a wasteland as well.
We’ll just have to wait and see.
I really wish they had a replica of the character select screen on the website. IDK why but I really like the idea of seeing that fill in over time and I like knowing where people are on it. I like designing hypothetical fighting games and one of my favorite things is deciding who goes where on the select screen. So… IDK. Would give me serotonin.
Also Kronika is trending and it’s mostly people hating on her. Which is lame tbh. I don’t get why people hate her.
Conceptually and story-wise, she’s an interesting character, although design-wise, she’s well…meh. Compared to Goro, Shang Tsung, Onaga and Shao Kahn, as a boss, she’s not great tbh.
I love her design. It’s most of why I love her.
I like that she summons a T-Rex, but aside from that, I don’t really care about her design. It just looks a little generic. Like an unintimidating female version of Caiou in typical fantasy garb.
It’s really interesting that when you dislike something you can go into deep specifics about it but when you like something all you can really say is “I like it”. Cause I just do. I like Kronika’s design, I like all her moves (the slow down sphere, the sweep laser, the triple blast) I like how she gets extra moves depending on the stage you fight her on and I like how she doesn’t actually touch you like how they did Dr. Fate in Injustice 2. Like she’s so powerful she doesn’t want to sully her hands with you. Plus the cool glossy transparent sparkle sections of her body are just awesome.
Based on characters that have been revealed in the suddenly public first chapter of story mode, Madame Bo and Kronika are both characters I hope are playable along with Jade and Nitara. Madame Bo looks like a female version of Bo’ Rai Cho and that’s cool! An old lady master character is something unique for a fighting game as far as I know.
You know, it just hit me…Wonder if Kotal Kahn will ever return, considering all the new timeline stuff going on.
From the number of slots we have left on the base roster, it seems very unlikely even as a Kameo at this rate.
Like maybe he could wind up as dlc like Takeda, but its kinda sad if he doesn’t make a return. I really digged his aztec/shaman astetic. Plus the Animality from MK11 is still a high positive imo.
I also go into deep specifics when a design is good as well, and have done so plenty of times for a given design. Kronika…I love the concept of her, but in terms of her design from a visual standpoint, it is very much at odds with what MK is about, which is kung fu/martial arts fantasy meets metal. Now, there’s nothing wrong with that, provided that the resulting design is cool, or if there is some connecting feature that kind of works, or, in the context of a boss, that it kind of makes sense and is intimidating. In this context, Kronika is a Titan, something that had never really ever been alluded to within the MK series, a primordial being something akin to the Greek titans of old. That alone suggests something so ancient, otherworldly, and powerful, something kind of inhuman. In the case of Kronika, though…yeah, her design doesn’t really encapsulate that concept very well. I like some of the visuals such as the energy glowing out from her eyes and certain portions of her skin, but her costume is pretty much typical white fantasy robes like one finds in any number of fantasy titles, albeit with almost Rob Liefeld-levels of comically huge shoulder pads. Visually, it’s very underwhelming. Granted, I like the idea of a strong character having a very understated and deceptive appearance that masks how powerful they truly are, but by the same token, I don’t think NRS successfully captured that aspect with Kronika. It felt like they haven’t really pushed the envelope with her design.
I like those aspects as well - the moves changing based on the stage was really cool - but again, a less generic and more intimidating design could have done so much for what could have been a really, really awesome character.
Madame Bo was an interesting addition to the cast, even a welcome one (so far).
I’m curious to know if she is related to Bo’Rai Cho or something.
That actually is a good question. Possibly since Shao Kahn is in the game, albeit a very, very early version of him.
You know I’m surprised we haven’t seen D’Vorah. Out of all the MKX era characters I would have thought she was a shoe in.
Honestly… am I the only one who thinks the roster so far is kind of… boring? Like it feels way too much like just a bunch of people. Even Reptile, the signature “creature” MK character has been halfway stripped of that by being given an average human form that will be most of what’s explored in gameplay. Like yeah there’s Baraka and Ashrah but they’re not the most “creature” of MK characters. Like, where are the Shokans? The Centaurs? The Naknadans? The vampires? Other potential interesting new non-human races. What about the robots? Like, yeah technically, when you look at it as a list of names from the franchise’s history, it’s got a lot of good names on that list. But as a whole package it feels… lacking in spice. Similar problem as Street Fighter 6 actually.
I don’t know but this game just doesn’t feel… right. It might feel good to play from a mechanical standpoint but… I feel like the game should be able to be more on top of just that.
So far my only real critique of who we’ve seen so far is the designs of the default costumes. More so the fact that the armor on them just looks slapped on, with random bits and metal pieces.
You look at FireGod Lui Kang, Geras, or the ninjas, they have a basic design sure, but realistically it looks natural for them to wear as its traditional warrior clothes, but then with General Shao and a few others, the armor just doesn’t look natural. NRS always tends to overdesign their character costumes, unless its retro skins. MK11 had a simmilar issue, but here it just feel more… again, almost A.I generated.
(Oddly enough some AI images people created tend to look more interesting than what we’re actually getting, but thats just me.)
Look at KI2013 for example when they redesigned characters, Jago had traditional monk gear ontop of wearing pieces of the Tiger Temple stage, looks awesome because the design itself felt consistent. It felt like anyone could wear it like a normal attire. They kept it grounded.
MK1, idk, just something about the designs feel a bit off. Maybe they’ll grow on me overtime, but my point is they should’ve followed KI’s idea for reinventing character costumes, i.e. being more authentic instead of…
“Armor piece here, bits and bobs here, random body straps there, etc etc.”
Speaking of, aside from Raiden’s orange monk skin and Kenshi’s yakuza suit, Im curious how the alt costumes might be. For one, giving Sub Zero and Scorpion proper ninja hoods or full masks like older titles.
The closer we get to launch the greater my desire to reject the New Era becomes. Nothing feels right anymore. It’s actually kind of frustrating.
Not really. In terms of Jago’s design, I didn’t see much in the way of traditional monk apparel, if at all. I thought the idea of the design and the direction was incredibly compelling. Not my favorite Jago design personally, but it does a fine job of conveying his story and character. I just wish that his story itself could have been as emotionally wrought, fulfilling and impactful as it was suggested.
The point I was trying to make being KI’s designs didn’t go overboard with unnecessary details, apposed to MK1’s current designs with characters like General Shao, Kitana and Mileena from what we’ve seen so far.
Least in my opinion.
Well, to a certain extent they had. A lot of the designs have a very action figure sort of vibe with all the various accessories. Riptor has all that wavy gridline crap and blue claws which isn’t really needed, let alone adequate enough to convey the cybernetic aspects to her character. Tusk’s cargo shorts, I never really felt that was natural nor made sense in relation to his character. Cinder’s mouth on his mask was definitely not a necessary detail that was needed, if at all.
Touché.
The world would be better if nobody had opinions.
Hot take
Even better if AI along with the Singularity and machines which include androids take over FULL control of the world to which I’ll gladly welcome it
