Because it sposisble it would’ve continued if the virus didn’t run rampant which killed alot of plans for the game devs.
I still wait in hope that Soul Calibur VI did not suffer the same fate.

Idk. I don’t really buy that. Delayed certainly. But not cancelled. Like…. Remember Aftermath and KP2 both came out in the middle of the pandemic and presumably on schedule.
Oh beleive me, I think the content was likley cancled if it was planned at all but it looks like it is over woith. So as far as MK goes, I’ll just sit and wait for MK12 announcement.
I know WB is working on a another project and I’ll check the trailer for it to see if it will be a game to check out.
But for now, I will be focusing on other games that I can check out.
That’s what I was trying to say. I don’t think it was planned at all. Like maybe they THOUGHT about it for like a bit, but not enough for you to call it’s current state cancelled.
I tend to agree that “blame the pandemic” is just the easiest and hardest to debunk thing you can say. I doubt the pandemic is what caused NRS to change their plans. Maybe they had originally intended the game to be supported for longer and the push back on crunch and the pandemic slowdown changed the economics for them. But MK 11 has two DLC packs and has been around for two years. It looks pretty complete to me.
Just because it’s on my mind, and related to the discussion of future KI and Phil Spencer’s recent quote. I think we all have a very mistaken idea that when companies or individuals from large organizations make these statements they are simply talking to us like a real human might talk to another. But the reality is they are communicating to a huge audience filled with thousands of really passionate fans who overreact and create a backlash to everything they say. So these communications are anything but casual. They are designed to minimize the volume and duration of internet controversy so the company can move on about its business. It’s easy to be critical of that, on behalf of the “fans,” because we identify ourselves as fans and we, as individuals, deserve an honest account of what’s really going on. But if you look at the collective fandom of MK (and KI) for that matter, those people are crazy. They hate everything and are generally toxic to deal with. If there’s anything I learned from the KI development experience it’s that developers should not interact with the fan base. It isn’t worth it.
Yeah. I’m sure the pandemic is indeed a factor, as it is for so many other companies, but I’m sure multiple things came into play for NetherRealm Studios here. I also agree that in terms of content, the game feel very complete as well. We got a dozen additional characters added post-launch, and a story expansion, something they have never done before, which was fantastic.
For your second paragraph, well said overall. I’ve generally distanced myself from most gaming communities, and social media in general, because of how negative and toxic it all is. It’s not just with fighting game communities, but also with RTSes, MMOs, etc. It’s, sadly, a gaming culture thing.
Idk. The only thing that bothers me is the roster having an odd number of characters. Like… it murders my ocd. Really wish KP2 had had like… one more fighter in it just to even out that box.
It’s still very neatly organized, simply not symmetric. I don’t see an issue with that.
Last I checked, popular FGC opinion towards MK11 was not great and MKX was being treated like it was the holy grail of the series all along, so maybe NRS doesn’t see a point in investing more into the game in that way either.
Further support was probably bound to limited in any case, as they get closer to releasing their next game. They went a few extra miles over the expected content cycle for their titles, so there’s nothing anyone can really complain about other than the usual about their favorites not getting in.
It’s a legit ocd thing. Not in the fake exaggerated way the Internet uses as slang.
I definitely hope we get closer to x and even 9 in #12. 9 is still the game I have the most fun with while playing it. Like, it takes itself seriously while still preserving the goofy nature of MK3. X didn’t have anything like that and was just kind of gross in some places. 11 had slower and worse combat but at least it started going over the top again. I probably would have ended up preferring 11 if they hadn’t borked the combat up.
Also. Please. Just… stop with the variations and customization. It’s just misplaced effort. Just give the characters a single cool and varied moveset and lots of pre-set costumes so you can spend that effort on making more characters and more story content. Not to mention it would streamline the unlock process tremendously.
And finally, cool it with the Krypt! What’s wrong with just having a menu store front for unlocking concept art? Why do we have to have a huge hub world just for unlocking ■■■■? We can’t even customize the names less avatar! Just…. Stop. It’s not needed. We want to play your game. Not play some other game you stapled on to it for no good reason.
Truthfully. What I want from NRS is for them to finish the Injustice Trilogy and then take a break from both. Do some other types of games. Maybe do some crossovers with other fighting and comic book ips like MKxSF or MKxKI or DCvsMarvel or DC vs Shonen Jump. Maybe finally do that horror icons fighting game we’ve all been hoping for.
The FGC’s, and certainly the NetherRealm Studios community, changes their opinion all the time. As an active member of that community, I can tell you that Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition is remembered very, very fondly from a competitive sense for being the game that started the modern scene, but it is regarded as absolutely broken and not really competitively viable in today’s day and age.
Mortal Kombat XL, people either love it’s fast-paced, hyper aggressive gameplay or they absolutely hate it.
Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate is mostly crapped on for, well, everything, because it’s the current NetherRealm Studios game and the community always seems to hate the current game and then rose colour glasses it years down the road .
I would just add that it’s probably good to take “prevailing FGC opinion” on the game with a grain of salt. Complainers are loud while people happy with the game are too busy playing to tweet about it all day.
For sure. That comment about FGC opinion was meant to be snarky. I remember when people were trashing MKX as a brainless 50/50 rushdown game; complaints MK11 was specifically designed to address and what drove a lot of excitement about it.
It’s just that this is the same kind of community temperament that apparently scared off Iron Galaxy from working on KI again. I’m not assuming anything about what goes into NRS’s decisions though, and by all precedent MK11 was very likely completed as intended.
Where did you hear that? I thought they loved talking with the community?
I think they did. But after a while the community became so toxic that Keits essentially disengaged. And IG in general had far less community interaction after that.
Same,
Well that’ unfortunate. I only hope if we get another KI that we can gain the trust of whoever is working on it next. Still it shouldn’t of stopped them from wanting to do another KI because of a few people. But who knows, maybe the next person might do just as good. Still would love to know where you got that info from @BigBadAndy
On the MK11 stuff, I get how the community can get toxic and out of control sometimes. Heck I’ve seen this kind of behavior sense MK Online was a thing and MK Armageddon was still in development.
On the other hand, we should also take some community’s concerns into considerations as long as they are civil about it. That way the fans wanting things like their favorites or any other features can get added by listening to the civil groups and not punishing them by grouping them with the more toxic ones.
Heck I’m among those disappointed that one of my favorites was left out. and I do get where those whose favs got left out are coming from. Though I don’t think its okay to react to it in a toxic way. We should discuss out disappointments in a civil way.
I watched it happen. I followed Keits on Twitter and he posted at one point that he was taking a break from social media and would no longer be discussing KI game balance issues from his personal account.
I kind of thought everyone was aware of this.
