Wait, what? Seriously?
Well lookie here.
So apparently there is an argument that this didn’t deconfirmed them either. Still the chance of them showing up is still pretty low to none.
Curious, where did you hear that?
Correct.
It does. The comics weren’t perfect, but they had some fantastic character development in them. The few things we’ve seen referenced in-game (Story Mode specifically) would still be canon, but the rest isn’t now.
Yes. On Nov. 11th, Dominic whats-his-name, the lead story guy at NetherRealm Studios, tweeted in reply to someone that the comics are not canon.
This video will confirm it,
To put it in summary, When shao Khan died, Mileena took over. In which case nothing had changed. But Mileena looses control of her savage nature and as a result and became close to pushing outworld into the ground. This of course lead to the rebellion that happened in MKX. Mileena didn’t always treat her subjects very well.
I’m not sure how else to put it. Even if she became worse than Shao han that doesn’t mean shes awful as a character. Many do like her and I can see why they do. she is very interesting as a character. Being born as both a Tarkatan and Edenian which was both a blessing and a curse for her. Even when the old timeline had her as a kid she still was a victim of circumstance because on more than one occasion she would ahve that blood lust.
Of course that part is just a theory.
Heck I like Reptile as a character but I don’t agree with his actions.
Kotal is also a cool character just not a great emperor compared to Kitana.
Aw, man! I really liked the MKX comics. That’s disappointing.
So this doe sopen some thing sup, not that it mattered to begin with.
Reiko, Havok, and Kintaro are not dead in this timeline.
Rain was not cooked by Kotal.
Although, there’s some things that really sucked.
For unexplained reasons, reptile works for Kotal now.
I bought the game over a year ago mainly because of Shao Khan. Felt like a fool. Hopped back into MK11 after a one year hiatus. Just looked at the Shao Khan reviews post-every-single-patch (lol). Seems nothing’s changed. My other favorite is Skarlet. I am bad at picking strong characters
That’s a third party video though. While History Behind the Warrior is respected, when I was watching his stuff a year or so ago, I noticed some things were incorrect, or his own speculation/interpretation.
I prefer to go with what we actually see/know from the games (and formerly the comics) themselves. In terms of her pushing Outworld into the ground, there was never any mention of this at all in the game, nor was that a reason for Kotal’s coup. His reason was: “She’s not allying with Earthrealm against Netherrealm.” Reptile even pointed out that she was a clone and not Shao Kahn’s biological daughter, but Kotal dismissed that.
In the original time line, she was a very different character personality-wise; they’re honestly separate people. For the original timeline though, I don’t recall it ever being said in-game if she did grow up with Kitana or not. I know we saw that in the Malibu comic series (which was never canon) and in many video adaptations, but I’m not sure if this was canon to the game.
I’ve seen to scenarios, one where she grew up with Kitana, and the other where she was introduced as Kitana’s long lost twin sister returned home when Kitana was around 9000 years old. The wiki says the latter, though which is correct, I actually can’t say. The later would make more sense as to how her Tarkatan features were hidden from Kitana better.
100% agree, though I still think Kotal is the worst of the four Emperors. His choices were just really poor throughout his entire reign. So much so people were cheering for Shao when he returned and was going to execute Kotal!
Not unexplained. He didn’t seem to trust Mileena because she was a clone. He made this pretty clear in the flashback sequence that show’s Kotal rebel and dethrone Mileena in Mortal Kombat X. I actually found Ermac’s shift there more puzzling.
Quite so. They had their issues, but overall expanded things nicely. Some elements from them where recognized in-game, simply because the comics were canon until a few weeks ago.
My thinking is the game’s Story Modes are obviously the primary canon source; that’s the actual story. The comics I’ll still acknowledge unless it’s a contradiction with the games (then the game wins) or a specific aspect NetherRealm says never happened.
They just released a skin for Skarlet based off her comic appearance! This occurred after the comics were declared non-canon.
Try with Kutsom Variations now, and see what people are doing there. It’s opened up some characters better.
That’s cool. I have to admit that I’m disappointed that they made her an orphan turned blood mage when in MK9 she was sort of like Ermac, just this freak made from the blood of Shao Khan’s victims. I guess one could say that the Scarlet Kronika took was from another timeline where she was one such possibility.
Keep in mind though, DLC characters are not canonical representations of the characters, as they don’t appear in Story Mode.
Look at Triborg. He’s a very cool character. He also doesn’t exist. In the comics (when they were canon), he wasn’t mentioned at all. In Mortal Kombat 11, he’s not mentioned. Once. Why? Because the “character” was created simply as a way to bring the cyborgs people love back into Mortal Kombat XL. He’s a non-canon character.
Characters’ DLC representations can be added back into the lore though, i.e. the changes made to Sindel in Mortal Kombat 11. They weren’t canon when she launched with the Kombat Pack, but they were made canon by her inclusion under the same story premise in “Aftermath.”
So for Skarlet, her representation in Mortal Kombat (2011) isn’t canon. Her representation in Mortal Kombat 11 is.
True, I suppose.
I’m pretty much with you on the “meh, it’s just Mileena ” train, but I think she’s got a lot of “flavor” to her moves. The knife game she plays on your face, the switch between ravenous beast and dancer on certain moves…I think she’s got a ton of personality in her animations. I’m bored because I think Mileena’s boring, not because I think she isn’t expressive or is hackneyed.
Maybe because you log into/out of your account every time? That’s probably not super common among most users
Regarding comics and novelization lore, it’s best to never get too attached to them as canon in any medium, but especially videogames. They are soft canon at best, and will be mercilessly retconned at the first opportunity if a dev team feels they need X, Y, or Z to happen in the game they’re currently making. Extended universe character development or world-building will always be sacrificed if a team thinks they can do something cooler/better/more interesting in their actual game. Character motivations and histories game-to-game get sacrificed on that alter (ie Sindel); books and comics are decidedly lower on the sacrosanct scale.
On the question of how good of a Khan Kotal was, I don’t think you should take the cheers of a blood-crazed coliseum crowd to be dispositive. The crowd cheered when Kitana killed Shao in original MK11 story too, and cheered both Kollector’s impending death and his escape. Mobs are fickle things
I really just meant “turn off the game.” It’s weird, since my brother has the same issue I figured I would post here and everyone would say “yeah, I hate that.”
About the only thing I can think of that is even slightly out of the ordinary is using fight sticks. It’s weird too because the game remembers the custom setup and when you go to the options menu it is there as if it has remembered your settings. But for some reason the buttons aren’t assigned properly unless you visit this screen.
Absolutely, and this happens with actual in-game stories as well. Blizzard Entertainment is notorious for this.
For myself, I take everything we’ve officially seen of the character into account, not just crowd reaction. I truly do think he’s a really poor emperor, and his overall choices and actions are what support this.
For Mileena, since we don’t know much about her reign, save that she was dubbed “the mad empress,” the jury is still out, but it seemed a lot less happened of note and little seemed to change from when Shao ruled.
Oh yeah, the Outworld “mob” reminded me of the mob from Metropolis.
I’m active on TestYourMight, and have been for several years, and this is the first I’ve ever heard of this issue. Perhaps you’re just lucky?
He was a better ruler than Mileena and Shao Kahn, but that’s not really saying much. I recall hearing how Mileena was about as tyrannical as her father, if not more so. The way I look at these characters, in the context of our society, all three of these people would be horrifying to contemplate. As a barbarian society, though, Kotal is probably the lesser of the three evils, though not by much.
You just reminded me of how the Test Your Might minigame is just not here anymore. They should bring it back!
Ah, I think I get your position better: you’re judging “who’s best” based on moral ground.
Keep in mind, our morality and the morality of Outworld are vastly different. Based on our morality, all four Kahns are horrible people. Kitana would be the best of the bunch there, and she’s spend thousands of years murdering innocent people.
From a moral standpoint, I’d rate them as:
- Kitana
- Kotal
- Shao
- Mileena
I rate Mileena the worst there because, while we don’t know much about her actual rule, she was extremely young and impulsive at the time and didn’t seem to do anything to forward Outworld’s status.
For me, when I talk about Kotal being the worst emperor, I’m qualifying “best” and “worst” as which ruler did the best for the Realm in terms of expanding it/protecting its interests, keeping in mind how different the realm is from, say, Earthrealm. Outworld is a place where might, violence, and strength are common place, and even valued!
In that light, I’d say the best to worst would be:
- Kitana
- Shao
- Mileena
- Kotal
I rate Kitana as the best because, even though her rule was short, she actually unified the realm in a way that had never been done before. Had she been able to rule longer, I think she would have done great things in forwarding the Realm’s morality as well as keeping good relations with other realms.
Shao next because he was the conquerer. He expanded the empire and built the empire that we know. Under him, Outworld was “unified” through strength and oppression, but it was unified and rightly feared. The people of Outworld didn’t need to fear outside threat under Shao.
I rate Mileena next because not much seemed to happen under her (roughly) seventeen rule. Things sure didn’t seem harder than under Shao, but she didn’t further the realm in any way that we know of.
Kotal is last because under his rule, the realm was a complete mess. No unity, constant war and in-fighting, no expansion, no major moral or humanitarian improvements, poor relations with other realms, etc.
If Shang Tsung is Mortal Kombat’s Sagat
and Shao Kahn is Mortal Kombat’s M. Bison
then who is Mortal Kombat’s Akuma?
