Is Gargos cheap?

Granted I’m still trying to figure him out. However I’ve noticed watching other folks play against him people says he’s “cheap.” How so I’m genuinely curious? The people that spam portal punches suck but otherwise I have no issues with him.

Any time someone tells you that Gargos, or any other character, is

You definitely shouldn’t!

Heck - my wife was playing Ranked last night, she mains Riptor - and she got a XBL message calling her “Cheap” for using flame carpet/fire breath/mortars to keep RAAM away from her (which she should CLEARLY be doing in that MU).

Being the smart lady she is, she informed them that it was their fault that they didn’t have a strat to get around her zoning. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I’d be amiss not to mention this - if you enjoyed Seth’s article(s), I would definitely suggest the following reading:

From Masher to Master by Patrick Miller
Playing to Win by David Sirlin

Both can be found for free online with a little googling (I even think From Masher to Master might still be housed on Shoryuken.com)

But yeah - great, dare I say essential reading if you’re into competitive FGs.

Random player: I feel guilty for using X character because Y attack is cheap

Mike Tyson: I feel guilty for boxing because I’m stronger than my opponents

Usain Bolt: I feel guilty for running because I’m faster than my opponents

Conclusion: Don’t feel ashamed to use any character, play for fun!

Good points funny how certain match ups are deemed “cheap” when in reality that’s how you play the character(s)

Riptor cheap for being rushdown lol! Wow ranked sometimes.

My pleasure. You’re gonna love those books.

From Masher to Master is more about the building blocks of a fighting game and basic fundamental strategy. I regularly re-open FM2M’s first few chapters - lots going on despite being explained in a very simple manner.

Playing to Win is more about the competitive mindset - some of the concepts Killian touches on are covered therein, but its definitely more expansive on the mental aspects of competition.

Annoying? Absolutely. Cheap? I dunno. Either way I don’t have that much fun going up against him. Win or lose.

Gargos is cheap because he only costs $5.

I’ll see myself out…

Is he cheap? Sure, logically you can probably see why he’d be seen that way. But does having things that are considered cheap a bad thing? No.

Not to mention what is cheap and what is not is subjective and constantly shifting. But obviously, 3/4 screen sweep, quad jump, minions interrupting opponents combos, super armor that gives you a built in combo breaker and ridiculous zoning are going to be perceived as such, especially vs lower level players who can’t find the holes in your strategy.

Generally speaking, people don’t like being kept out of their effective offensive ranges, and also tend to hate having to run down a character several times throughout a match, dodging nonsense the whole way each time. Gargos does both of those things pretty well, and has access to a few additional shenanigans besides.

But is he “cheap”? I don’t think so. His zoning and movement are certainly annoying, but I tend to think that the cast pretty much has options for how to deal with his nonsense. Play your game and have fun - even if I am supremely frustrated by a particular game style, I’ll never rag on you for playing in a style that works. It’s on me as your opponent to shut down the strategy.

The only thing I’m learning about Gargos he’s really good at what he does. I can see how that’s irritating. It’s been mentioned he’s good up close. I disagree his normals and recovery for the most part are SLOW as heck. Up close I pretty much get beat up. Mid screen and back I think he’s better but that’s my novice opinion of him.
