Growing the Community: Combo Assist Mode Discussion

Agreed! All pokes turn into automatic hit confirm combos now. Not cool.

Everyone’s shadow will be 100% Combo enders lol (Very few dropped combos)

I also think it should not be able to be mixed. Either you have it on and you can only do 2 enders and cant do things like around the world, demon loop, 3rd auto, ect… or you have it off and its the old game we all know.

Yeah, the combos should be more canned or restricted in some way if you have this on, even if you can still make them long. You shouldn’t be able to have it both ways. Persona’s combo assist is a fixed combo, and not optimal. That’s a good tradeoff for that game.

You could maybe still be able to choose strengths of the same move for linkers or have the combo restricted in some way in terms of enders without making it 100% predictable, but something’s gotta give it seems.

Not to single you out, but you aren’t using the term “Hit Confirm” correctly. A hit confirm requires the play to react to opponents state (hit or block) with the appropriate followup to start/complete a combo.

In 3rd Strike, a Chun Li player would constantly input D+MK, DF, F, D, DF, F. This is a crouching MK followed by two quarter circles forward, but with NO button at the end. Why? Because you don’t want to do low MK into super if the opponent blocked. Crouching MK had a big enough cancel window that it was very possible to confirm that your opponent was hit (and didnt block) and then tap the final attack button needed to unleash the super. This is a very important example of what ‘hit confirm’ means, because on block, Chun will have wasted a meter and be very very punishable on block.

Simply tapping a button twice in Combo Assist is going to get you that special move on hit OR block, with all the same disadvantages on block as usual (including being shadow countered). This is not a hit confirm. This is the same as you buffering Wind Kick after every normal no matter if it is hit, blocked, or whiffs. Which you can already easily do without Combo Assist on.

thank you for the clarification…Im knew to all the FG terminology.

Im still correct though, right? Plinking 2 attack buttons is going to get you out of a poke and into a combo very easily? Without really any execution?

Im all for bringing new players to KI..but I personally think the assist should be either on or off, no mixing it up and should not be allowed in Ranked or competition. And here is why:

There are so many smart as hell players out there they are bound to find a way to use this to there advantage and will dominate even more than they already are. You know this Keits.

Noted. Thanks for the explanation.

However, what is the incentive do to the motion at all anymore if you’re committing either way?

By reading through your post you need to grow up (ASAP)are you even old enough to play this game?
And yes I’m asking a genuine question.

Player assist won’t make much of a difference to someone who knows the game, and most average players with some experience will find it easy to counter people who are “button mashing”.. Ever heard of CCC-breaker!!!
You might need to get better at the game if you feel scared by a new inexperienced player.
Let you’re brother enjoy the game as well,Killer instinct is part of my life growing up you both should enjoy the game as much as you can.

Too far. 3 day ban to cool off.

7/10, your post could’ve used a bit more topical snark!

“I pushed the 3-Day-Ban button casually as well.”

I’ll be interested in seeing how this plays out. I’ve always been trying to get my girlfriend in KI but she complains about the controls. Hopefully this will make her want to play more.

My misconception about KI. I only realized this once I made a decision to become better that you need to memorize so much in KI. Other games sometimes literally just have the exact same gameplay template for most of their characters but not KI.

Bottomline: I really like the simplification of a combo assist. Even I will/can benefit as I can learn other characters faster than before. New Hud, combo assists, combo breaker training, shadow mode; a plethora of options to get better.

A side note on character dojo. I personally like combo trials as a fun way to challenge others by daring them : “can you do this? Show me!”. But combo trials are different from character specific tutorials. I think the latter is not necessary as it comes from exploring the game, whilst combo trials are just to add a fun and exciting mode to KI.

Late to the discussion, but I definitely agree with those saying that there will be no incentive for people who learn to play this way to ever turn it off.

Either

  1. A Damage/KV nerf should be implemented or
  2. It should be completely locked out of ranked (if they try to go into ranked with it on, give them a friendly message saying they need to turn it off first). Maybe have a little flashing indicator next to the person’s name in exhibition letting you know that they are using it too.

Either one of these options should satisfy those on both sides of the argument in my opinion. IG wants people to be able to pick up and have fun with the game. We may have friends/family we want to be able to try it. Great idea from that stand point. But force people to move on if they really want to fully explore the game. This should not be the new standard way to play.

Another concern for me, like someone stated above, what if those already top notch players turn this on just to avoid the occasional drop? And yes, everyone drops combos from time to time. Don’t give me that ‘mid to high level players don’t drop combos’ line. Watch ANY online or offline tournament and you will see dropped combos throughout the top 8. It’s a normal part of the game. Because of nerves, human imperfection, whatever. I’ve won and lost many games against very good players because of dropped combos.

Related point- It shouldn’t be stackable with the normal combo system. What’s the point of that anyway? If the assist tool is going to basically just correct for a missed input, how will a new player know if they got the input wrong or right anyway? On or Off. Not both.

Just re-posting from my twitter (with some extra notes) as I see a lot of misconceptions in here about the purpose and use of Combo Assist mode.

Combo Assist isnt about closing a gap between beginner and expert play. It wont, and it doesnt, at all. That is not why or how it was designed. The game hasn’t changed.

Somehow we have people saying beginners will be too powerful now, and other people in the same thread saying experts will be more powerful now. The truth is that no one will be more powerful. Experts are still experts and will easily beat beginners because they have put in the time to understand and execute the core of the game (spacing, reactions, conditioning, control, situational awareness, matchup knowledge, breaking, instinct use, defense, shadow counters). Nothing has changed about the game at all. You still need to learn when and why to do anything that you do, even if you get to do a couple less motions per opening.

Combo Assist is there to make beginners WANT to learn the game by getting them into the fun fireworks of KI quickly. People simply don’t put time into learning just about anything, if they don’t have to, unless they are engaged by it in the first place. Beginners should be have a lot more fun against other beginners, and I fully believe that Combo Assist does that extremely well without changing the actual game in any way.

So if your criticism of Combo Assist is “it wont help a beginner beat an expert”, you are exactly right. It isn’t supposed to at all.

KI isnt a game about doing a max damage combo. Everyone who plays already should know this. Doing the max damage ground combo is already trivial, but you get broken because its all very react-able.

So hopefully, beginners have more fun against other beginners and develop the desire to learn more about KI (and keep playing!)

As far as hit confirming goes, as I just explained in the Chun Li example, expert players are already doing

d+MK, db, b (notice no additional button press here)

And then choosing within the timing window based on the situation if they should press LK at the end to perform the Wind Kick they didn’t finish inputting. Nothing has changed about this other than not needed to input the DB, B. The timing window for the 2nd button press is identical, so if you couldn’t hit confirm WITH a motion, you certainly cannot without one.

Edit: I also don’t see a problem with players who want to turn this on and leave it on forever. If they are playing KI with us because of that, I’m 100% for it. And also think about disabled or handicapped players who may finally be able to enjoy higher level play BECAUSE of this. Why clip it’s wings due to irrational fears?

100% agree! It shouldn’t be a missed input correction tool for advanced players.

Your Chun Li example…I didnt even know was possible… thanks for the info… Im going to try this asap.

Will top32 killers get an asterisk instead when they finish in the top in case they have combo assist on? :syringe:

No, because Combo Assist does not change the game in any way.

More players sticking with KI due to the Assist feature
+
New players trying out the game because of Games With Gold
+
Season 3 and KI PC release around the corner

A larger KI community population, more interest in the game, and potentially a bigger budget, more seasons, better tournament prizes (meaning more interest from high level competitive FGC members) and potentially more merch - all stuff we’ve been asking for.

Someone check my math in case I forgot to carry the 7 or missed an algorithm.

True. Just a sarcastic joke after reading some of the criticism above. Combo assists are a great feature and no one needs to be worried by unfair advantages.

I’ve gotta respectfully disagree Mr. Keits.

It changes the combo system which is a (the) core part of the game. Pitch it however you want. And obviously most people here like the idea, but to say it changes nothing about the game is a stretch.

This is not opinion based. It factually does not change anything about the combo system. The player gets to perform a couple less quarter circle motions, but the system (all of the rules, timings, etc) are all identical. This isn’t debatable in any way.
