The more people talk about the source material the happier I am to avoid it…
Lol, we are just nerds. Don’t mind us
Lol. That’s not what I mean. I love nerds. But the more I learn about DragonBall the less interested I am.
How come? Just picking at your brain a bit. Not everyone has to like the same things, but it’s cool to hear other opinions.
As far as a whole…
I like Dragonball, I like Dragonball Z, Dragonball GT was meh, Dragonball Super (not finished so it can improve later) is garbage.
Well it’s opinions so don’t think I’m trying to convince anyone or disparage anyone who likes it. I like bass fishing - I’m not throwing stones.
But the main character sounds like a dolt. The plot just seems to be about fighting. Because reasons. Battles go on for ages and destroy worlds. The “hero” possesses innate super strength and therefore wins (which is pretty common to comics and cartoons but the trend lately has been to add more of a real plot to this formula).
Add to my existing predisposition against the art style (I don’t like it) and my failed attempts to try to figure out Dragonball (z? The original? They were actually looking for dragon balls with a Purple haired girl in an orange jumper?) and I’m just not hearing anything that makes me say “ooh that sounds cool. Maybe I should give it another chance.”
Yeah, I may have went too deep about the “lore”. I loved the manga when I read it back then, but I disliked how the anime was a horrible adaptation, not only for the character changes(Goku as a hero, filler, slow paced episodes where nothing happens…)
Going back to the game, I’m really hyped for it, which is saying something: the last FG which hyped me was Killer Instinct, which was 4 years ago!
Speaking about the game, I’m eager to see what they have for the remaining characters. These are some of my guess:
-Beerus: I expect him to be a heavy hitter, with damaging single hit attacks, being cocky and arrogant, like flicking his enemies and not paying much attention to them(like Gargos, with his arms crossed). I could see him having a counter-like attack similar to Hisako, since he is so powerful that he could just deflect effortless any attack. He is also super lazy, and may have a horrible assist
-Gotenks: extremelly gimmicky character, with Galactic Donut as stun attack, slow, but unblockable and leaves his opponent open for a combo. His Ghost Kamikaze attack leaves a ghost stationary in the stage, similar to Kan-Ra’s swarms, allowing him to control the space. It’s also his assist, which helps his allies to control the screen
-Hit: He is able to stop his opponents for half a second, but they retain their hitboxes, so if Hit collides with them he will suffer damage, but allows him to stop and avoid attacks which otherwise other chars coulnd’t avoid, or allows him to attack more safely. He uses a special meter for this. His supers doesn’t deal much damage, except his lvl 3, which is easier to dodge than most lvl 3 supers. He is also somewhat slow, to compensate his great time stop skills
What do you believe the remaining characters could be in terms of gameplay?
How I would interpret some characters:
Hit: Since has little to no ranged attacks I’d like for him make up for that with him having counters. A lot of what we have seen with Hit involves him using his Time Skip to stop his opponent’s attacks and counter accordingly. Think of It like hisako. He shouldn’t fully rely on his counters but when used right, he can be a major threat.
Janemba: I see him being kind of a mixup-zoner (with a bit of rushdown) character. Obviously he’ll have his sword which like trunks would give him good range. He can use his legoport as a significant part of his move set being able to move through opponents even mid combo (however if the opponent can see it coming they’ll be able to dash/backstep out the mixup) and like Gargos he can punch through portals from anywhere on screen (though it would have significant startup frames so careful)
Gogeta: Obvious I see him as a balance type character. He would have a rather acrobatic combo set with a good combination of punches an kicks. They can also be easily linked into special moves. Of course he would have the beam attacks of both goku and vegeta (though mostly goku) He can use his Punisher Drive to close in distance into a quick grounded combo (though it has big recovery on block) and he would have his Soul Strike while yes it’s a short but quick melee combo it can used a great combo ender if you wanna go for that extra damage.
-shrug- I have a different opinion on this. Whatever Goku was in the source, be it anime or manga, he was something different in the Funimation dub. And that something exists, because it is what was seen by millions of people growing up. Heck, it’s what I bought before I came out to Singapore. Think of it as DB Gaiden/Alter if you must, but the show exists and is as “real” as any other version. Whatever Toriyama wanted, however he felt about the changes, heroic Goku is a thing. What he intended is irrelevant to a certain extent, because the work ignored his intentions and forged its own path.
And you know what, for all my declarations of letting a work stand on its own, I’m happy they changed his work. Those changes are what helped me enjoy DBZ and fall in love with the show. I don’t care what Goku was “really” like, because you know what? I like the Funimation version of him better anyway. He’ll always be my preferred version of the character, no matter what Toriyama wanted or intended him to be.
Speaking of Goku, that’s one of my favorite parts of the King Piccolo arc. Goku was ■■■■■■ OFF the entire arc and he was dedicated to save his friends. Instead of winning every fight eventually, Goku almost dies TWICE, and that makes the situation seem more dire.
We also saw different sides of Tien and Roshi in that arc, and I like that part of it too.
Yeah I liked that too. Nowadays it kinda hard to feel tension (at least in the latest arc) know you have 3 magical reset buttons on standby and have essentially GOD HIMSELF on speed dial
Just know that your Future Trunks will fall to my Senzu beans
Yeah, it’s hard to get into an anime if you don’t like the art style. I’ve always kind of liked how different DBZ looks though - the designs wind up conveying a lot of action without really looking like any other show.
Overall, I do think it’s worth watching at least a bit of it to see if it’s your cup of tea. The action really does still hold up well, and Funimation dub Goku is a pretty likable character IMO.
EDIT: I am going to body you @TheNinjaOstrich
Bring it then! Once February rolls around, it’s over!
I’m going to get bodied by everyone.
Heh, don’t get me wrong, I know that Funimation’s version exists and I’m not denying it by any degree. I know and accept that this version is widely accepted, and I have no problem with that.
But even then, being this version an (IMO) worse version of the character, even being more alike to a “standard hero”, he is not a hero. He still is the self centered punch drunk Goku. Some details can change, but still, the key factors which makes him what he is are there. The anime version is more childish and more ridiculous, which are another two things I dislike
It’s funny, since kid Goku is more mature than his adult counterpart, specially his Super version, which is the older, but also most immature version of the character.
-shrug- I simply dislike the character, in all his intetactions(with the exception of when he was a kid, which I liked), as you dislike Vegeta.
Me too. Here are my guesses:
Hit: He’s the character who I feel like I have the best idea how he’d play. His time skip would essentially be a counter, where once you activate it, if they touch you you’re getting cracked with a powerful counter attack. While I’d prefer a counter like Hisako’s (unstoppable hit into combo) I suspect it’ll work more in practice like Baiken’s, where once it triggers you have options on what attack to use, they are stuffable, and they’re harder to follow up on. Really hope the counter isn’t stuffable though, as I think it’d be cool to force people to respect you more than they do Baiken (whose counters generally lose to multihits and a host of other things). I think his invisible assassin strike will make an appearance as a command grab attack not too dissimilar from Cell’s. The dimensional shift stuff will probably show up in a super, perhaps as a defensive super (which I think would be pretty sick).
Broly: I still think he’s all but guaranteed to make it in, but I confess that 16 basically is what I’d imagined Broly would be. Perhaps they’ll make him more of a brawler than a grappler, but for whatever reason I still foresee him having some grab animations or supers (the facepalm into the wall is really iconic I feel like). Could be cool if they took the character as an opportunity to try out an armored fighter ala Aganos. Broly is kind of noted for just generally walking his way through attacks, so he’s a good character to try that archetype out on.
Beerus: I see him as kind of a bored powerhouse kind of character, where everything he’s doing is performed in just a nonchalant “meh” kind of way. When he’s knocked down he’s lounging, his idle is his hands behind his back, etc. He’s not a complicated character so I don’t see him being especially technical to play, but they’ll probably throttle him back by giving him some kind of obvious limitation borne by his obvious lack of ■■■■■ to give. Hope they go for the dangerous-looking cat-eyed portrayal though, as opposed to the more expressive gag-oriented version we see later in Super.
Yamcha: His VA confirmed that he’s doing lines for the game, so I expect Yamcha to be the Dan of the game. He’ll be a straightforward all-rounder like Goku, but just worse at it. I expect wolf fang fist to make an appearance as a super.
Zarbon: Almost certainly don’t happen, but I’d love to see him show up. His base form would be a weaker all-rounder, but once you pop his install super he’d get a speed and damage boost that’d make him a much tougher fight.
Janemba: I see him as a mixup character. Beyond him having legoports and a sword, no idea how he’d fight.
You best believe if my boy Yamcha is in the game, Vegeta is gone lol
Good. Vegeta took everything Yamcha loved and held dear
Its not unlikely to see a counter based character , and Hit could fulfill the role perfectly. Before you said nothing, every time a character was released, I was like: if this char has a Counter-Hisako-alike, then I have to learn the MU since Storm is going to main it xD.
Hit definitely has the skills to furfill this role.
About Broly: I can see Broly as a grappler/Brawler. I also expect him to have something to allow him to easily counter projectiles, even supers. Like, a Super which he can do as a projectile supers counter , if he is being hit by one, the camera is centered on him ignoring the super, then he laughs and attacks ferociously.
I always liked Broly, and if he makes it into the game, has a good chance to be in my team
Goku has no humorous animations, and Krilin has one but only during his intro. Considering this, I believe Beerus will not get any, they are taking a more battle-oriented serious approach, so it’s a safe bet to assume that Beerus is not going to be a humorous character
