Do you guys think Season 3 will be more Mature and less limited by its kid friendly rating?

It’s hard to believe that came from Disney, but that was a good show.

I guess with Rash as the leading character of Season 3 I guess that kind of answers my post. I think it will probably stay on its course, but now that I rethink it there is probably a higher probability that the game will get even more kid friendly considering how Rash is turning out.

And just for teh record I’m not hating on Rash. Again, I’m not a big fan of this need to keep it so cartoony but I do think it is so cool that he just morphs into a wrecking ball. I’ve never played battletoads but that is kind of cool.

I think it’s probably a mistake to overestimate the importance of Rash to S3. He’s a guest character and they took advantage of Rare Replay and the PR opportunity. That doesn’t make him the poster boy for S3 and I wouldn’t use him as a yardstick to measure the tone of the season.

Aren’t fighting games somewhat cartoony simply by the tropes inherent in the genre? Everyone is throwing fireballs and can perform a 2+ meter standing jump.

Sure, ‘Mortal Kombat’ might have blood being splashed about and limbs flying all over the place, but it’s still a game where, according to canon, a movie star with his name tattooed across his chest defeats a four armed monster-man by punching him in the testicles. Colour coded ninjas teleport around or throw freezing blasts of ice at one another.

Even the gore is so ridiculously over the top it’s as laughable. The vast majority of the fatalities look like something out of a Troma film as opposed, and the X-Ray moves don’t make a lick of sense. Erron Black’s X-Ray move involves him shooting his opponent with a bullet that literally has their name scratched on to it. If he shoots the Predator guest character, instead of a name it says, “Ugly ■■■■.” The Predator’s X-Ray decapitates his opponent, and they bounce back just fine. That is some Wile E. Coyote walking off-screen and coming back unarmed logic.

And I’m not bagging on ‘Mortal Kombat’. I think it’s ridiculous fun. I just don’t understand where this idea that ‘Killer Instinct’ is too cartoony comes from when you compare it to other examples of the genre.

The last fighting game I can remember having played that didn’t have those cartoon elements was ‘Bushido Blade’ for the PS1. Which was also a lot of fun, but something of an outlier in that half the matches ended after the first hit, because it was a game where getting struck in the head with a warhammer tended to spoil the rest of your day.

So, what are the cartoon elements that you’d like to see ‘Killer Instinct’ move away from?

This.

Seriously OP you need to relax :U

Another thing to consider is that T rating doesn’t necessarily mean it’s marketed towards a “kid friendly” demographic.
I mean, look at Oddworld. A meat packing company is experiencing a drop in profit (because the animals they use for meat keep going extinct) so they decide the best option is to commit genocide and use the muddoken natives enslaved at the factory for their new source of meat ala Soilent Green.
No matter how humorous that game is, that’s really f*cking dark.
I think if the game were to get darker, it would be as a result of writing, not rating.
Just my thoughts on the matter, anyway. :stuck_out_tongue:

I think as long as its rated T, we are gonna continue to get a watered down version of what KI can be visually, content wise, and over game style…so yeah.

Considering what the Oddworld series has gotten away with in their T rated category (deep inuendos, crude language, genocide for money, and lots of gibbing), and the fact that the old KI wasn’t exactly a world class novel in terms of story telling (best summarized as “fight in our tournament, win a prize” for KI1 and “fight in ancient tournament and save the world from man bat” in KI2) I don’t think it’s much of a problem.
Semi-related note: @KillerSwift7, Didn’t you say in another thread that you don’t play story mode anyway and just focus on multiplayer? Why would the style of the writing affect you if you don’t play for the story?

eh, odworld vs KI…idk. Too different and kiddie.

I was unaware that rampant racism, forced cannibalism, and species wide slavery (all for the sake of a money, no less) were more kid friendly concept concepts than ninjas vs robots vs dinosaurs.
Oops.

but told in a pop up book…

Not sure what the argument here is.
I mean, they have p0rnographic pop up books, as well as pop up books exploring different phobias in graphic detail.
I’m pretty sure that the message/content being portrayed is a far greater indicator of something’s level of maturity than the medium used to portray it.

lol. I wasn’t irate over Rash’s inlusion. You relax!

Sorry, I didn’t mean for this to be a thread about Rash specifically. The cast lacks coherency so I don’t feel like he broke anything in that regard. I do feel like it is probablly an indication that the game will maintain its all-age appeal though (don’t worry, I’m still relaxed lol). But at the same time Gargos might be coming, so things might get crunk. idk

The lesson here is that some people are so obsessed with the outward appearance of “maturity” that they will overlook the actual content of something in favor of flashy, gratuitous and frankly ridiculous displays of sex/violence/gore. And then they will post about it a million times. Apparently the fear of having someone accuse you of playing “kiddie” games is overwhelming.

It’s a shame, because in addition to completely failing to understand your point about odd world, such a person would miss out on many things. Like the fact that Inside Out is a more mature movie than Fury Road, for example.

I haven’t seen ‘Inside Out’ yet, but as someone who measures the film’s contribution to society solely by the percentage of screen time devoted to dudes with flamethrower guitars, I’m having trouble believing that to be true.

Sure, a cartoon about coming to terms with your emotions and understanding that it’s alright if you’re not happy all the time sounds good in theory, but ‘Fury Road’ did have that one scene where Furiosa was really upset for some reason that I can’t completely recall because it didn’t have dudes throwing exploding spears and leaping onto a semi-truck rocketing through the desert.

Side note: I now really, really want the Doof Warrior or Furiosa as guest character for Season 3.

Style over substance, by the sound of it.
I like the point you made about Inside Out and Fury Road (though I’ve heard good things about Fury Road) Andy. I have a similar comparison:
Saw vs The Lion King.

Apart from making your skin crawl once in a while, how much did the deaths in Saw effect you? How about the story? I know my answer would be, “not a whole lot”. The deeper meaning of “life is important” didn’t exactly catch on when there’s hardly a breathing period between horrible on screen deaths, and none of the characters seem to care beyond “oh ■■■■ that guy’s dead! Who’s next?”, so it doesn’t seem to actually serve much more purpose than “we did it because we’re a ‘horror movie’” (had to put that in extra quotes since Saw isn’t scary, it’s just messy)

Now, how about Mufasa? That one death was all that was needed. It made audiences worldwide weep, young and old. Story wise, it carried some heavy weight. It was actually important. That one death sparked development in our main character. They felt loss, they felt guilt, they felt fear. It changed them as a person (well, lion) and put them in a situation that required personal growth, which fit in with the narrative being given. The Circle of Life, learning to put your past behind you, discovering the value of learning from your mistakes, and overcoming doubts and/or misleading thoughts planted in your mind by manipulative creepy uncles.

The Lion King was presented as a children’s movie, but I reckon most adults you’ll talk to would remember it a hell of a lot better than they remember Saw and its ilk. The story on display was impactful, the events in the story were meaningful. They told an incredible story with provocative narrative and outstandingly tragic events, and is remembered as not only one of the best Disney animated family flicks, but as one of the best stories ever told.
Not bad for a G rated flick, eh?

I want a pornographic pop up book…but…anyways I don’t like rash, I get the whole Rare collection marketing scheme that was pulled, sure, but rash is gonna be one of those players that I will never touch especially if I have to listen to his dialauge…

And why? WHY DID THEY HAVE TO MAKE CINDER SO CHILDISH!

"HAHA THAT WAS TOOO MUCH FUNNNN! "

The Lion King is Shakespeare.

Saw… is not.

Precisely~ If a Shakespearean tragedy can be retold with singing cartoon animals and still maintain the same effect, I think that KI’s story will be just fine where it is.
Thanks for noticing me, Adam.

I don’t think KI was ever limited by its “Kid-friendly” atmosphere. It’s gameplay and overall fun factor is what makes it great. The game doesn’t need to be darker to be good, that has absolutely nothing to do with how well it will sell or appeal.

Its easy to pick up…
Deep enough to require mastery…

and most important of all… FUN.
