Why a September release? (Shadow Lords)

I don’t know if this is so it’ll launch at the same time as the definitive edition or if there are still some major things holding it back from at least showing up for August. Any input from the devs or the community would be greatly appreciated. (First post on these forums, hi everyone!)

Howdy!

I believe Shadow Lords is waiting to be released with the definitive edition of the game so that way everyone gets access to it all at the same time. Unless something else is further said on the subject, that’s the only logical conclusion that can be made.

¯_(ツ)_/¯

i really hope that isn’t the case, wouldn’t feel fair to keep everyone who already has the game waiting for a physical disc release to be able to play. That is unless the version we saw at e3 or in the glitch last patch still needed a ton of work, in which case I would understand completely. I just wonder what it could be or what needed to be polished since then :no_mouth:.

ha ! theres another thread with people making these exact same conclusions, allegations and assumptions haha

I wouldn’t say we are jumping to conclusions, it’s all just speculation really. I just hope to bring some attention so we can hopefully get some insight from the devs and have the community discuss as well. It seems like a pretty major feature so naturally a lot of us could be curious about it, I myself am really looking forward to what this can bring to the table .

isnt speculating the same as coming to conclusions?

I don’t think so, we don’t have enough information to come to anything really concrete so in the meantime all we can really offer are our thoughts on what MIGHT be the case. neither me or RFGC really know what’s happening behind the scenes in shadow lords and its release but hopefully by bringing it up and talking about it we can get some answers. For one, what are your thoughts on the mode?

looks fun, hoping that they will blow us away with secret unlockables they havent mentioned yet. shadow orchid ftw.

I’m curious how a shadow orchid could turn out, but I’m all in for unlockables. They’ve mentioned about getting some cool unlocks so hopefully mimic skins and whatever else we don’t know about can be earned in this mode.

Here’s my thoughts for why it’s being released then.

  1. QA is a long process. Especially for a big mode like this. There are likely to be bugs, even in the release quality version coming in September. Letting it line up with the release of the Definitive Edition allows them a bit more time to get things right.

  2. The items that you collect in this mode can be used in the multiplayer mode coming later. This means that more QA testing is needed to make sure they work consistently. It may be that release could have been in August, but they wanted to be sure.

Again, all of this is speculation on my part, but testing and debugging is heavily needed for a mode as big as this. Hopefully, when we get early access we’ll be able to completely understand why it needs more time. As far as I know, only those who signed up at the EVO panel will get early access, but they could open it up a bit more. I just hope people remember that it won’t necessarily be release quality.

I think a well deserved long summer holiday break also plays some part here and there.

I wish I were still in high school and got those!

In all seriousness, nothing sinister, and the date of release is more of a “gotta have it out for all DE folks.” You’ve often heard game developers, artists, or any content creators talk about the tireless and nearly endless revisions process. Doesn’t mean something is broken or going awfully wrong, but there is always room to improve. There are times where we wish we could constantly tweak and fix, but if we did that, we’d never release because nothing is ever 100% perfect. Not saying, again, that anything is broken or the like. We just like to make sure things are polished.

So with SL, with this date we now have a chance to let employees of all skills give it a shot & give feedback. Then we will let a handful of trusted outside individuals in. Follow that up with a larger batch of preview participants, and finally an actual release. During this whole time we can monitor habits and tune the experience to better fit what we would like to see, and what the numbers are saying folks would like to see and do.

Long story short: more time is awesome!

Glad to hear its getting the fine-toothed comb treatment, though I have to ask what happened to the July release for a new multiplayer mode as promised in the Season 3 trailer? Was it pushed back due to Shadow Lords being tuned or is this mode not ready?

They stated on the evo panel that the multiplayer part is coming until after SL

Yeah I know but they didn’t say why, at least i dont’ recall that it isn’t coming as promised this month.

It’s not coming this month. It’s coming after shadow lords. The reason for that is because the multiplayer mode uses the items from SL. It’s like a multiplayer version of shadow lords except you fight other players instead of gargos. And SL isn’t finished, so they obviously can’t release the multiplayer part. Delays suck but oh well lol

Yes I know it’s not coming this month. lol

I don’t really care about the delay but as far as I’ve heard they haven’t even addressed it, or told us what’s up.

They addressed it on the ki evo panel lol they said it’s not ready, because it ties in to shadow lords, and shadow lords isn’t finished lol

I really wish the panel was available to see in YouTube…
