Hi there!
As and avid Shadow of The Colossus player I finally got the chance to play this game and I would like to discuss the story with other players that finished it. There will be spoilers, so if you haven’t play it don’t check the blurry part XD
General overview (no spoilers): The game actually looks out of date considering what the PS4 has to offer. It’s not about the “graphic style” it’s everything else. Still offers a wonderful ambience but contrast are sometimes to high. I played the game during daylight and couldn’t see anything in dark places. The art style is similar to the previous games. You feel small in a huge mostly sepia world. As the other games this tries to have the emotional touch in it and I think that’s were the focus is. As most of you saw there’s a giant animal called Trico and human little boy.
In SoTC the magic was in the colossus (at elast for me) and here you will find it the creature: Trico.
About the gameplay, is not different to playing SoTC, controls are not that smooth and some animations from the boy are clunky. The camera may give some headackes. The creature however looks amazingly natural. I believe that’s the part they did very, very good and convincing.
Story:
Ok, this is what I call “lazy” writers. The story here is based on what you can play, nothing less nothing more, it would leave you will a lot of questions. They won’t take you really far to know the origin or reasons for many things that are happening. It’s just left to your own interpretation and for me that’s kind of lazy and again dissapointed. Not having the chance to know more and understand what’s really happening in that magical world won’t let me feel it either. Some people can cry with a videogame, and though I was expecting a bit more emotional stuff with Trico I didn’t get it.
The overall story we can think of is that there’s a magic orb trapped or living in a giant crater that controls these strange creatures to kidnapp boys and throw them intro some place to…prepare barrels and food?. So the tricos are trained like doghounds that go to find “food to make energy” for a couple of barrels that we are unsure what they have.
But what about this?:
* Boys marks: Either they have the formula to cook you or are a way to control the person (like when sentinels use symbols to stun you). They magically appear when the human is inside the beast.
-
Barrels: food made out of kids? maybe the souls? why are always surronded by butterflies? Is they are refined humans then we have been feeding our friend with…HUMANS oops. They are man eating beats afterall.
-
Stone sentinels: they are scary and kind of dumb. Also build up by energy. It must be the guardians or workers of the big strange lazy mighty valley orb.
-
Mind control: so were these creatures breeded or natural from that world? are they bad or good? It looks like the helmet and some devices used by the orb (we can only presume) can control them as it please. My guess is that the helmet has a lot to do, some other players also think the horns has a lot to do. Maybe both.
-
What happened when Trico kidnapped the boy? did they connected in some way or that’s the way they do that? When I first saw that I started doubting if I could trust that creature because it put the boy in such an awful stituation! the creature was the enemy and now they were going together everywhere. That’s the only one I’m giving this game.
-
The mirror on the mummy: So we have no idea of what this is…An old culture that had an energy mirror to make the creature throw energy blasts from it’s tail? wwooooooww. A mummy, strange symbols everywhere. A huge world and towers that made no sense at all for people actually living there, unless: humans actually lived there and used tricos to move around and then created this strange energy orb that killed everybody and then…blablabla. Nahh, don’t know, again, lazy game -___-
-
The eyes: Are these the eye of Sauron? Why would you put eyes so the creatures won’t go there? were they saving the food supllies in the middle of the abbys? Ok, lets say they “scared” the big feathered creatures with them. But why the eye? It looks more related to Sauron that a giant orb. There could at least put eye symbols close to the orb or something. Maybe again they are related to the previous civilization we have no idea about and why they have something with heights, since I don’t think any human will live in such a place so remote and diffcult to do anything.
I have more doubts about this:
Trico went wild twice when close to a cage that emits sound and swalowed the boy too. What then? It didn’t take it to the place to cook the little guy. It just vomited him anywhere else?. Was that mind control that didn’t work? We never get to do much against that device until we have the mirror.
Also the creature redeemed itself taking the boy home with her/his last breath or that it seems. That action showed how much trust and care they build. Despite almost killing you at first. So the creature had memories of what it was doing?
And another thing…Why is it called The Last Guardian? who was the guardian and why are they guardians of what??
The tittle is missleading. The guardians protect and guard for something/someone. Ok, lets say the boy was the guardian of the creature or the last person to escape alive from there when he was destined to be food. I feel the word guardian is not meaningful in this game with the current actions. The creature protects the boy, the boy feed the creature and care for it wounds. But there’s nothing to guard, really. It could have been called “The Last Friend”, “The Maximun escape”, “The human barrels”, “The Last giant cat bird dog”, The Last licing magical evil Orb". okok, I see…
I’ll say I’m dissapointed on how powerless this story was to me. I wish it was different. But funny I was expecting this.
The experience itself it’s ok and the creature is fantastic. I like to call it “The Little Collosus”. And that’s what the game gives: you are very small lost in a huge world and you can only rely in that one beside you, even he looked like an enemy at first.
Side note: I liked the creature AI, I honestly do.
