The "Exercising" Thread!

Seems like you’ve already figured it out, but remember - workout consistency is more important than workout intensity. Get your routine down and simply stick to it, doing small incremental increases to intensity as you go on. Lifting 10 lb dumbbells every day for 3 months is much better than benching 185 lb twice a week for the same duration.

Best of luck as you get back into the swing of things

An update:

I made it into my “groove”!

I found a specifically "Muscle Building " style, 4 days a week, weekly workout that I wanted to do. I began by being VERY carefully not to overwork myself. I’m doing the first 2 weeks with double the reps, but MINIMAL weight. (I’m currently on week 2, day 4). I always make sure I finish the exercises with plenty of energy left, never getting close to “working to failure”. This lets me focus on my FORM, and the extra reps get my joints used to the movements. Unfortunately, this means most of my workouts involve 0lbs, 5lbs, 10lbs, ECT. Many times I just have a bar, or tiny dumbbells. But I put my ego aside, and told myself to accept that I have to start from the “bottom” to get to the “top”.

The workout goes:
Lower, Upper, rest, lower, upper, rest, rest.

My experience with this was very interesting. I completed the first two days, and I felt like I didn’t do any workout at all. It was too easy, and I felt I started out TOO slow… But then… for my rest day, I was S O R E! If I had done more, I definitely would have “over worked” and not been able to continue.

So, I “recovered” well during my rest day, and continued to days “3” and “4”. I continued to use minimal weight, but I ran into an issue. Even minimal weight was too much. I finished every exercise, but I felt like I worked WAY harder to do it. It was definitely more intense than days 1 and 2.

I went home feeling very scared that I had over worked by accident. I was remembering how sore I felt my first rest day, and it made me think I was going to feel WAY worse the next day…

…but the soreness never came! I successfully got over the “wall” of “begginer’s overworking” after just 2 days of taking it slow! Now I complete each workout, and I can feel the muscles during my rest days, but they aren’t “painful” at all, and they always recover in time for the next workout.

Just to stay safe, I’m sticking to my plan of taking it slow for 2 weeks, and after that i will transition to regular reps, with close- to- max weights.

It feels awesome to finally be in the groove, and the confidence boost is amazing! I’m walking around with my head held high (mainly to work on good posture as well :stuck_out_tongue: ), and with much more positive thoughts about myself. I fantasize about the day I can help others achieve this, too!

(If anyone wants to see my workout, I will PM it, or post it public, if yall think its more appropriate that way. I am moving from a 4 day workout to a 3 day workout, because I’m having a lot of trouble managing my time, but that seems to be only current issue overall.)

I gotta be honest I don’t exactly excercise myself…it’s never really been my thing. And you would probably think with me being 5’6" and 300lbs that might be a bad thing…but I’m actually pretty healthy, and a good deal of my weight is muscle. I don’t really exercise, but I have had some pretty labor intensive jobs and have some pretty good muscle definition from them. I also have the metabolism of a rock, and the one time in my adult life that I actually lost a significant amount of weight I was working a job that kept me in a hard run for 12+ hours a day (sometimes upwards of 18 hours) and wound up in the hospital for dehydration-related reasons (Coca-Cola sucks as an employer)…and other than that at best I’ve only ever broke even. My current job (security officer) I walk about 17 or so miles a week, plus I’m constantly lifting and toting around a 30+ pound 4-year-old, so while I’m not going out of my way to exercise, I’m getting a decent amount just living my life. Other than that I’ve come to terms with being built like a sumo wrestler. :sunglasses:

Kudos to those of you that do go out of your way to be fit though and are seeing good results.

I exercised whole winter. Nothing hard: push ups, pull ups, some core muscles exercises and some abs exercises. All without weights because I have light scoliosis so I am scared of injuring my spine.

Stopped around March when farm work season started because I have lots of physical work now so I dont have steam for exercises right now.

Just started running a few weeks ago. Moved half a year and the surroundings in this neighbourhood here are nice for taking a walk/going for a run.

Running 2 to 3 times a week now, still the same distance, but getting further everytime before I have to dial it back to a walk for a bit. Pretty happy with how I’m managing to keep it up, weather helps aswell, love the Spring.
