I personally love the idea of a Mortal Kombat/Killer Instinct crossover, and I keep developing ideas for it in my spare time. But the one thing I can’t figure out is the story. Why exactly are these two worlds colliding, and what do they have to work together to stop. My only idea involves a conflict between Gargos and Shinnok, but that is kind of boring and copy-paste from other fighters stories. So, if anyone has any ideas, post them below.
Side-Note: I DO NOT WANT this to get hundreds of comments saying that they hate the idea of this crossover and that it shouldn’t happen. I know that there are people who don’t like the idea. This thread is for people who DO like the concept to share ideas as to how to make it work.

Shinnok and Gargos don’t have to collide at all. MK is ALL about realms crossing over and starting stuff. An MK/KI crossover could happen with Gargos invading earth, and a portal opening a cross realities happens, which allows the MK guys to come through.
That is just off the top of my head, but you could go REALLY deep in to this as MK’s lore allows for any of these things to happen.
Edit: Some other scenarios (after giving it a bit of thought):
- Dark Raiden senses a disturbance in the Earth’s Jinsei, and after deep meditation he realizes that another Earth, in another reality, is under attack from hostile forces. Eager to keep his pledge to keep “Earth” safe, Raiden gathers his forces in the Jinsei chamber, and opens a portal to this Alternate Earth.
…
In MKX’s continuity, Raiden (now Dark Raiden) has Scorpion and his clan with him, and probably a few others. But this scenario would also allow other to join him, though some may turn against him by the end of the story.
- Liu Kang, venturing deeper and deeper into his new Netherrealm empire, finds a one of the Elder Gods ancient abandoned portal. In the ancient inscription, he realizes this monolith would give him the power to venture to ANY realm he desired. Gathering his forces, Liu Kang sets his sights on Earth, but once across the threshold he finds that this is not HIS Earth. With no Raiden to stop him, Liu decides to corrupt this place, and use it to strengthen his empire.
…
Kitana would be at his side, and this would also open the door to a bunch of other “dead” characters to be brought back. Smoke for one.
- ARIA, having defeated Gargos with the help of the KI fighters, returns to her plans of deciphering all the secrets of the Astral Plane. Developing the means of portal manipulation for herself, she gains access to ancient realm that she quickly learns was called “Outworld”. Finding no advanced technology here, she sends out scouts to explore this new terrain…only to find hostiles. Of the 3 Fulgore units sent out, on 1 returned…badly damaged, but with it’s memory core still in relative good condition.
ARIA has seemed to have awakened a sleeping dragon of sorts, as the Khanum of Outworld has taken this trespass of “Earth” into his territory as an act of war…
…
You could literally go anywhere with the story here, and keep is relatively in line with the existing canon of both worlds.

I like a mix of 2 and 3, I like the idea of people on both sides doing something like this which links these two worlds specifically. I think it could have a split story like MK vs DCU, where plot 3 leads the characters of KI and plot 2 leads the MK characters, and in the end they have to work together to fight some common enemey.

Honestly, I hated the premise of the ‘MK vs. DCU’ game. Keeping the worlds separate, having them NOT work together to reach an ultimate goal (except in the end) was kind of lame. The story ended up being WAY more comic-booky than like MK proper. MK’s stories are WAY more intricate than that, involving many characters with different goals and expectations, fighting for their own reasons and achieving those individual goals at least in part, or not at all, by story’s end. In MK vs. DCU, there was only one goal - defeat Dark Kahn - but honestly that could just be a product of the whole cinematic story feel of that story. Not to mention they had that HORRIBLE crutch in “RAGE!”
So dumb IMO.
If there ever was a crossover between KI and MK, and they were to take the story semi seriously, I just hope the different factions are represented accurately and in a fun way. Boiling the story down to just fighting for fighting’s sake, and there being some generic one time use character invented JUST for this game, is just kind of lame to me.
I’m sorry you feel this way.
Your sorrow is unnecessary.
Gargos and Onaga have brunch. They start an argument then everything goes sour.
Onaga punches Gargos then Gargos does the same.
Shinnok enters to assist Onaga, but is shocked by Eyedol who proceeds to pummel him.
Eyedol has been attacking a illusion this whole time. Shin now appears behind Eyedol to ram a bone up his.
Eyedol retaliates by summon a meteor shower but Shinnok teleports and slap several teeth out of Eyedols mouth with his X-ray.
Shinnok gets hit in the knee by a shadow slide by Shadow Jago. Flips Shadow Jago off before he gets an ultimate performed on him.
Shao Kahn enters calling everyone in the room scrubs including his own Kombatants.
Turns around to laugh only to be grabbed by Omen to decimated by his super.
More fighters enter ----
To be continued

I’ve seen some of SL, and the cut scenes seem fine. Also, from what I’ve heard, much of the “story” / dossiers are just the back stories that they put out on the forums.
So what are you really having an issue with?
Yeah, but that’s expected from a fighting game. The story isn’t my concern for a KI/MK crossover. It’s NRS’s ineptitude at game mechanic balance and creation that makes me worried should this ever happen.
ya, but the dialogue is extra bad on this one. dude it’s pretty bad lol
Wouldn’t it be hilarious, if the killer instinct staff trolled us, and “accidentally” released an early draft of their shadow Lord mode story mode where everything was bad simply because it was in the early stages. So that they could amazes on the actual release day when they release the real thing and have it be amazing.
That’s my prediction anyway.
is WB even willing to do a KI vs MKX?
Who knows…
Ed Boon said he thought the idea was cool, but the fact still stands that the game would be an Xbox/PC exclusive, so it should go without saying that MS would have to pay upfront for that game.
While that game is a fan dream of mine, I realistically don’t think it would be very lucrative for either community. That being said, a guest character in either game from either franchise would be enough for me personally.
After playing MKXL over the weekend and realizing how bad the gameplay actually is.
If they made a MK vs KI it will fail just like SFvsTekken failed
That game played like a Street Fighter Game instead of a tekken game and if it played like a tekken game people would have complained it didn’t play like a street fighter game.
Mortal Kombat is all about spamming 50/50 mix ups gameplay is nowhere near KI this looks like it would be another failure like MK vs DC universe or SFXTekken
Your rant makes it seem like you just don’t like MK. You do realize that MKX is one game, and that every MK plays differently don’t you?
Anyway, I don’t think there really is any point to correcting you, as (from you wording) you just don’t really care about accuracy.
^ To be honest after trying it over the weekend I don’t like it. and I can’t imagine a KI vs MK playing the sameway but you are right maybe there are other MK games that play differently but from what I hear people generally hate the 3D ones in PS2
Generally yes, people don’t like MK4, MK:DA, MK:D, and MK:A. However, I really enjoyed the stance switching involved with it. It allowed for a lot of really cool combos.

Kan-Ra does what he does best and accidentally revives Shao Khan who pals around with Eyedol destroying the world, sounds good.
