Low Sales of SFV worries me

Let’s not make the mistake people always do of confusing the FGC with popularity. The 3000 people entering EVO make zero difference to the game’s success commercially. There’s already 100x that many people who have bought the game and aren’t going to EVO and the game is still considered to be flagging. Even if they double the EVO participants it doesn’t make SFV a commercial success.

Most of these games only “compete” in the minds of fans, not in the real marketplace.

A lot of these new players are players coming from older SF games who were turned off by IV, players from other games (including KI) who like SFV and/or see SFV as a watershed game for the FGC, etc. It wouldn’t be surprising to see interest die down and numbers recede to sub-3000 in the next year or so, when the game has settled and people have figured out whether it’s for them or whether they have a shot at tournament success.

I didn’t buy the game because an unnecessary butt slap was taken off censorship sucks how could they ;-;

in all seriousness I have it, it’s interesting, and I’m having fun with it, but at the same time it is lacking in single player content where most casual fans would go to

Capcom released that game at the wrong time.

The FGC were still enjoying USF4. Hell, they updated it with Omega Mode last fall. They were shooting themselves in the foot by:

  1. releasing an early access game and charging a full $60 for it.

  2. Splitting the Street Fighter FGC up

  3. Not catering to casuals, when games like MKX and Smash are setting the standard now.

They have a great foundation of a game, just like KI did. but unlike KI, they totally didnt market it and manage it correctly.

Capcom will take it as a learning experience. It’s a solid game when you get down to the core-mechanics. But, the ascetics and approach to casual audience is incredibly awful.

But, I’m sure it will all be done well a year from now with the release of [adjective] Street Fighter 5: [adjective] Edition

The butt slap is part of her personality and was also just something to spice things up.

I don’t think I’ve seen a lot of indication post-launch that IV is going to keep the kind of momentum needed in the competitive scene to drive a wedge through the SF player base. Before SFV’s launch, sure, but not at the moment. It’ll be interesting to see if the split does happen.

So, basically, what you’re saying is that right now it’s in the exact same boat as KI was when it 1st released, right? Because we’ve already seen how KI has been doing so far, with it’s slow release thanks to the Xbox MS blunder and while it’s most certainly getting better and growing, I’m not sure I’d call it great. It’s a very slow-growing community, it would seem to me. The chief difference between KI and SF is that the SF franchise already has a much larger following.

Personally, while I do like the SF franchise as a whole, I’m still miffed at Capcom for making it an exclusive on a console that I don’t care to own, and even worse, making it so I can’t even ever get SFIV as a BC title on my XB1, which I would’ve been fine with, as part of their exclusivity deal with Sony. So, since I can’t play it on my console of choice, I personally think that they get everything that’s coming to them. Let KI rise from the ashes while SF becomes obsolete and no longer relevant! Unless they change their ways, they shall join the annals of Tony Hawk in the great hall of failure! Mwahahahaha!!!

I’m sorry, was that a bit much? Well, too bad!

MWAHAHAHAHA!!! :imp:

Isnt just SF V exclusive?

Because I believe i downloaded have the super street fighter 4 arcade edition on the 360, and wouldnt mind a BC option…

As part of Capcom’s SFV exclusivity deal with Sony there is also a clause that states that the previous game in the series, SFIV, will NEVER come to the XB1, which likely includes the possibility of the game going BC, which has to be approved by the developer anyways. So, nope, it’s not going to happen, no matter how much we may want it to…

If I’m not mistaken, the way I understand the Backwards Compatibility issue is that the only thing stopping MS from just dropping the whole 360 chimichanga in our laps is them being nice to developers who are trying to make bank off of re-releasing older games & not trying to p*ss them off…well that & making sure each games runs properly…

Whether that’s the case or not, you would think after Batman Arkham Knight’s PC release, & the Assassin’s Creed Unity fiasco, & Halo MCC, & I’m sure half a dozen other examples I’m forgetting about here these game developers would learn that releasing half a game or a buggy mess of a game is not a good idea no matter how badly they’re wanting to hit a deadline to ‘maximize profits’.

…‘maximize profits’…lol…

I’m actually not sure if MS is just being nice or if they really can’t put the game up on the new platform without the permission of the game’s publisher. I have a feeling it’s more of the latter since MS isn’t known for being super nice.

As far as maximizing profits, (which doesn’t seem all that funny to me) I think companies do learn about this very quickly. I think we are just often wrong about what is effective. Halo MCC sold a little more than 3 million units, bugs and all. Halo 5 - a much less bug filled launch sold about 3.7 million units a year later. Although there was some criticism of game modes in Halo 5 the difference in sales between a remaster and a brand new game could very well be explained by the difference in Xbox One install base between 2014 and 2015. Meaning the negative publicity and the buggy release probably didn’t hurt sales of MCC much at all. That’s not a lesson we like, but I’m sure they got the message. Likewise, Unity sold very well moving about 6 million units between PS4 and Xbox One (and frankly the bugs were blown completely out of proportion - and I’m not even a big AC fan). Arkham Knight sold great on console, and dismally on PC - but I think they expected that and that’s why they didn’t bother putting much effort into the PC port. So while we may all trash the games and grump all over the internet, the companies learn that they can largely ignore us.

The issue with SF V is more dire than most of those other games. It’s a console exclusive on a great selling but still relatively new console - so a much lower platform install base than SF IV was selling to. There is a lot less hype because SFIV was a bit of a revival for the franchise after many years without a new numbered title. And, unlike KI, they weren’t upfront and insistent about their development cycle. So the big casual market has been turned off. Those players are not the ones that normally come back for each iteration in the SF series, (they buy the game at launch and basically pay up front for all the continued development and tournament support etc.) so it remains to be seen if they will show up when the content they expected at launch finally arrives.

I was taking a stab at the irony of trying to push something unpolished out the door to meet a deadline only to have it cause such negative publicity that it hurts sales.

Casual fans don’t watch streams of betas or fightinggames. They just buy the game when it’s out. Either randomly, by Ads on tv or word of mouth

I wasn’t around for the first season on KI sadly, so I never knew about how well or bad it did. I did however come at the start of Season 2 and will admit it felt “weak” for a video game as a whole.

Also, I’m not saying it’s bad because of console exclusivity, although you are certainly right since we can see how poor it did. I’m mainly mentioning how bad it did in its visuals and approach to casuals.

When I picked up KI I never wanted to go online, I played Survival and Single-player mainly. It actually wasn’t too long ago that I went online. My point is that KI has its arms open for a casual like me, especially one who wasn’t fond of fighting games at the time. SF it’s opening its arms to competitive gamers so it deters it attention from casuals. At least that’s why I don’t want it, and others who aren’t into the tournament scheme let it go.

I do love KI, but SF is the reason I even knew about fighting games - in some odd way, I pity them and hope they learn. Still, KI is always going to be my home for fighting games now.

I feel largely the same way. I really started to get into fighting games way back when SF2:TNC released way back on my old Sega Genesis - that was the 1st ever showing of Cammy, Fei Long, Thunder, and Dee Jay on a console.

OMG; can’t believe I just did that. ><

I thought you were either trolling because of how similar they look, or a brainfart. :stuck_out_tongue:

Definitely the latter. :stuck_out_tongue:
