KI4 Getting Announced at E3 2019, Release in 2020 before EVO?

I wonder if we will get any kind of teaser this weekend at Combo Breaker. The name of the event is a term from Killer Instinct after all.

Yeah, Combo Breaker is run by Rick, who’s a huge KI fan (look for him in brackets - TheHadou). I don’t think there’ll be any announcement or anything, but out of tournaments CB would be the most likely to host a KI reveal. Evo is bigger, but Combo Breaker has a lot more love for the property and has a ton of eyes on it as well. That said, I see no reason to expect a reveal of any kind this weekend.

And yes, MS owns the rights to Killer Instinct. It does not hold the rights to Minecraft. If non-release on PS5 is a death knell to you for the franchise, then you may as well resign yourself to being a fan of the series’ corpse. There is little practical reason for MS to place the series on its rival’s system. Would Mario’s Fantastic Adventure XYZ sell more if it was multiplatform? Of course it would. It would also disincentivize people from buying into Nintendo’s console ecosystem if they could get every title they love on whatever system they really, really like. So you will continue to see Mario’s Fantastic Adventure XYZ only on Nintendo systems.

Unless the rumored MS/Sony partnership for Azure goes quite deep (in the sense that MS makes money even when Sony sells things), then I would be extremely surprised to see a new KI go multiplatform. Win10 and XB is quite likely; being on a Sony system is a leap.

EDIT: I believe Minecraft is a unique case, in that by the time Microsoft bought the IP it had already been released on PS4. It made sense they would keep supporting it even on that platform, especially because the company eventually intended all the different system ecosystems to be unified.

The PS4 has reached the end of its life. The PS5 will be out in a year or 2. If the next KI is ever going to be on a Sony system A: the PS4 isn’t going to be it. B: it will likely be available on everything from phones to tablets, all consoles including PS5 via Xbox’s upcoming streaming service.
So can we please leave the dead horse whipping in the first stage of Super Castlevaina 4 where it belongs?

I do not like the idea of game streaming. I want to own my game so that even if it goes down off the store, I can still play it. It’s why I refuse to buy digital unless absolutely necessary.

Sigh. KI was owned by RARE and purchased by Microsoft in the early 2000s. It is 100% a first party game. As @STORM179 points out Minecraft was purchased when it was already a million+ selling property available on a half dozen platforms. Part of the acquisition deal was the MS would not remove it from those platforms.

KI will never appear on PS4. I don’t think there’s any realistic expectation that any KI will appear in a future Sony platform either.

Sorry for the double post but this is a separate discussion.

I absolutely love digital games. I will never go back to buying physical products if I can help it. I appreciate the idea that people like to have control over the physical thing. But how often do I pull out the N64 and play those games? Never. Just getting rid of all that clutter and going digital is my favorite decision if current generation.

Streaming is different. I actually tried streaming games a few years ago. I played the Witcher and it was very functional for a game like that. The graphics were fine but there was a lot of video artifacts from the compression and it didn’t look as good or as sharp as a locally processed game. I think this could be conceivably fixed in the future.

But a bigger issue is that I don’t think there’s any way fighting games will perform well with the kind of delays streaming games have. Even assuming that they can get matchmaking sorted out even an ideal situation with a few ms of delay is going to be way worse than locally processed fighting games.

KI4. Xbox Two launch title. Revealed at E3. Launch roster the size of SFV that grows for two to three seasons of DLC. You can buy a $30 digital edition OR a $60 physical edition that also gives you the next two seasons when they come out.

Yeah. That’s totally true. There is no way a fighter would function with that much lag. Not to mention a lot of the high speed action games I like to ply such as Crash Bandicoot, Sonic the Hedgehog, Bayonetta, and Devil May Cry.

If the games are designed from the get go with latency in mind, I think most single player games including action games could be playable without taking too much away from them. But competitive fighters seems really hard.

I guess I just don’t trust it. I never liked streaming and I don’t like paid subscription services. I want to just pay once for just the thing I want.

Yeah, latency will definitely be an issue. I’m not saying it would be ideal, but from my understanding MS is intending on using the X-cloud to put their games on all everything, so I would assume a new KI would go along for the ride even it does have a latency issue.
I’m not a big fan of the idea of streaming myself either. The tech sounds neat, but other than that I don’t like the idea of companies being able to pull games whenever they feel like it. That’s already been an issue with digital games. I know I actually learned of Afterburner Climax after it was already taken down from the 360 and PS3 stores, so I never got to play it outside of the one time I played the arcade version…well, until I found a PS3 emulator that is. But I mean there have been so many games that you just can’t get (legally) anymore, and so many other online games that had a huge online presence that are just gone now because the servers were taken down. It just seems to be a bleak future if you enjoy playing something outside of the latest trends in gaming.

That’s an interesting prospect. But I’m still probably going to get the next Xbox over the PS5. The one x stomped the pro in terms of raw power, and Microsoft actually seems to want to do things with the ips I love, where as Sony seems to want all their old ips to die.

I’m glad to see a KI4 speculation thread, I mean let’s be honest there’s nothing else to talk about right now. LCD has good intentions, anyone saying otherwise probably needs more things to fill out their day..no one even comes to this forum anymore it’s the wrong place to get attention.

Anywho..

  • I 100% believe KI4 is happening, the question is when and how. If I had to guess the game will be a launch title for Scarlet in November 2020 with a substantial ‘version 2’ DLC update in 2021. Before EVO next year ain’t happening Scarlet won’t even be out that soon lol. I think there won’t be single character releases, just a big annual update. Oh and PLEASE let the games balance mature so the meta can actually develop, IG got way too patch happy.

  • Whos making it? I’d say it’s either Iron Galaxy again or MS has essentially made a brand new team from people with experience in the series. And even though Double Helix as a studio no longer exists that doesn’t mean MS couldn’t throw some money at Mike and some key members of DH to come back for a sequel..maybe collab with some in house talent, Rare for art direction, some IG people who knows but I have faith they can assemble a competent team.

  • Platforms? PS5 ain’t happening sorry LCD but it’s a stupid move, MS needs all the valuable exclusive IP they can hold on to to help move systems..Hell I wouldn’t own an Xbox One if it wasn’t for KI2013. It’ll be Scarlett with probably PC not soon after launch to expand the user base faster than last time.

  • When will it be announced? My guess is E3 2020 but I could MAYBE see a very short quick tease of the game at this years show..maybe just a quick confirmation that the game is in development and show a KI logo.

And IMO this time around they need KI4 to have a lot more characters and be much more fully featured AT LAUNCH. Start with a robust game and you can take a lot more time to make the first big DLC update. Anyway the next 2-3 weeks will be very interesting to see what transpires at E3.

Is this true? I find it hard to believe if that is happening. If so then good, maybe now people can stop with the console war BS!

Also sorry for being late on this.

To start things off I’ll say that @Iago407 @CausingThought6 and @BigBadAndy has some good points there. @BolajiNigeria @BiyemAssi237 I think I know what the concern is. You two don’t want a repeat of what happened in 2013 and I get that. But the problem came with people either spreading misinformation on the Xbox One, or MS not wanting remove some problematic features. It may have been both. KI only got flack because it was some how guilty by association. I don’t see people bashing SF-V for being a PS4 exclusive despite all of sony’s flaws.

Don’t get me wrong I want KI be as accessible as possible, but that is not likely going to happen. There’s also steam and Windows release to start. Not to mention if Nintendo and MS stay on good terms for long enough switch users can access this as well. But this is also assuming that the MS and Sony thing that @G1GlaciusPrime mentioned is true. Personally, I disagree on KI-3 dying form it’s exclusivity it survived long enough to get through season three and added plenty of characters over it’s 3 year run. By that time, it lived long enough to be put on steam. If everything goes well KI-4 could do good too if not better. Will it do better than the previous game? That’s unknown, but only way to find out is to wait and see. So I wouldn’t assume the worse.

There’s atleast a couple things I’m hoping for at MS’s E3.

1: Halo Infinite reveals playable Elites after so long.
2: KI-4 announced

Despite those hopes I’m going to refrain from pushing it too far. Because I still think KI-4 isn’t going to be coming just yet.

From what I can gather from that, yeah that’s not likely happening. Yeah, KI on PlayStation console isn’t going to happen. We have a better chance of Eternal Champions and Primal Rage coming back.

Well, I mean it’s a step in that direction. Microsoft hasn’t exactly been secretive about what they want to happen with cross-platform gaming, which is something PS has been vehemently against this generation. MS seemingly wants to put their games on anything and everything, so I wouldn’t put it past them to use this as a way to strongarm Sony’s PS division let them have their way. But who knows. Only time will tell where all this wheeling and dealing will lead.

Well, let’s put some context around this. MS was never in favor of cross platform play when the 360 was the number one console. After they muffed the Xbox One launch (I still maintain the extra $100 price was the biggest difference maker), they became in favor of it. It helps the 2nd place hardware immensely if their players get access to the 1st place consoles players to play games with. It hurts the 1st place console who wants people to buy it so they can be part of larger communities with more of their friends. This really has nothing to do with MS or Sony. Having said that, all the third party publishers are in favor of this because it helps them avoid a fractured market. So they may talk the companies into it eventually. And if there is console parity then it makes sense for the hardware guys. But if you have a substantial lead in the sales race? It makes no sense.

Keep in mind I can stream Sony’s games on my Samsung tv with PlayStation Now. So it’s not really true that MS wants it’s games streamed everywhere and Song doesn’t like the idea.

As far as the cloud agreement- this really has nothing to do with Xbox and PlayStation. The cloud people are a different group in MS. People are reading way too much into this. It’s a deal to cooperate on infrastructure.
