If you by chance curse Killgore your probably gonna keep him pinned down for quite some time, he’s just too slow to do anything once he’s cursed.
More OP updates. Added Kilgore and any info found/shared…
Thank you guys for showing your support of Kan-Ra, especially the many matchups he has/had problems with.
Those that aren’t Kan-Ra mains and still post/lurk this thread, thank you as well!!!
Keep 'em coming guys!!! ![]()

Just from testing in training mode:
You can sneak a cr.MP in-between his cr.shots.
Or just let him fire bullets until you get a bar. Than it’s your turn.
Haven’t tried it yet but Shadow swarm may just outright destroy Killgore’s projectiles. I’ll test
If you place shadow swarm on the ground it destroys Killgore’s d.HP. If you place the shadow swarm in the right position you can block the st.HP. I totally forget to check if Killgore’s b.HP fires at a different height than the others but when it comes down to it you should, if you are even going to use the shadow swarm, place the Shadow Swarm on the ground which forces Killgore to use st.HP if he wants to zone. This means you can just use c.MP to get a free punish off. So far, I think Killgore is a pretty easy MU for Kan-Ra. Of course only time will tell, until someone start doing some crazy ■■■■ with Killgore and playing him really well at high level play, we won’t be able to see exactly how this MU plays out.
Kilgore has better buttons than Kan-Ra does… Kilgore can mash out a light with no problem, whereas Kan has cr.LK, and that’s far from mashable. Even up close, Kilgore can cancel out a block string with his steam shadow move, and will be able to force bait Sacrifice, or any other super for that matter, or just decide to throw. Stack that canceling ability with popping Instinct, something that Kan-Ra can only do in certain situations, and you can easily see how Kilgore can out beat Kan.
I’m not even being pessimistic here. Kilgore is definitely a fun character with a lot of crazy tools. It’s clearly evident that he isn’t just pure zoning, but the emphasis is still there. Kan-Ra will have to change up his movement to gain the momentum he needs to win, and that is going to involve a bit more footsies and less Sand Dashing shenanigans.
I also forgot to mention that Kilgore has some frame traps, and the way his combos work, despite the minimal damage, he has great mixups with plus frames just from doing something like f.HP ~ LK missile. If it hits, he can KD with cr.HK into qcb+LK for easy damage. If f.HP ~ LK missile is blocked, mix up again with something like cr.MK to an overheated HK cannonball.
The point I’m getting at here is Kan is NOT going to win easily vs Kilgore. Even if Kan did win, despite the balance changes, it’s still going to be a challenge without movement options for Kan…
Haven’t lost against a Killgore with my Kan-Ra yet.
What are you normally doing against them to win, and what are they just trying to spam bullets/missiles?
I’m not negating the wins at all when I’m asking this, so please take no offense in my inquiry. I’m merely wondering how many good Kilgore players are there online right now, and how many people online have actual Kan-Ra matchup experience and what each player typically does (or doesn’t do) against the other. I’m still under the impression still that an agressive Kilgore that can switch from zoning to pitbulling will definitely cause problems for Kan-Ra.
I’m still getting online and finding multiple people who don’t know how to avoid simple setups, and I think it has to do with the fact that Kan was nerfed terribly at the start of S3 that lots of ppl just dropped him altogether.
I also want to get other people’s inputs on this Kan v Kilgore matchup. There’s still alot of untapped potential in Kilgore, and with that, there’s still a ton of things not found yet. I’ll admit he’s a really fun character to use, and he’s definitely an alt I use alongside Omen and TJ Combo (now that I have a fightstick that works).
Well, they way I play Kan-Ra, I play differently for every opponent; I see it like this:
Everybody has a weakness.
Everybody has a pattern/playstyle.
Every character has something unsafe.
What can I do to exploit one of the 3?
So yeah lol. I just do what I see fit for that situation.
Fair enough. Well what weaknesses and/or patterns do you typically see in the Kilgores you’ve fought thus far?
I just feel like the ability for Killgore to lock Kan-Ra down isn’t all that great as long as you know the solution to every problem he throws out. I obviously could be wrong, and I acknowledge that I am probably full of myself when I say this, but it could just be that I’m one of the better Kan-Ra’s out there. I don’t lose all too often and feel like I specialize in keeping things under my control. Even when a Killgore, or any character at that, does something I have yet to see/don’t know how to react to; I dedicate time to learning what to do, how to play the matchup to avoid those situations’s, what to do if I get into that situation etc.
It also helps that I play just about every character fairly well because having knowledge as to what your opponent needs to do in specific matchup’s is a great idea.
vs Sadira
Running away is viable strategy vs the spider queen. She has a problems getting across the screen very fast. So what I do in that match up is set a trap near a corner and run away while constantly putting swarms on the field. She will most likely try to destroy the swarms which gives you many chances to open her up.
If I do a mistake and she is getting in I just explode and teleport to the other side of the screen. It doesn’t even matter whether the sandsplosion hits, because she won’t make it across the screen in time.
I’ll have to try this out.
vs Gargos
Cr.MP after blocking a light portal punch beats the both most common things Gargos does after that move. These are:
- another portal punch
- jumping
BONUS: Cr.MP hits the minions between Ra and Gargos, too.
Keep that in mind when zoning Gargos.
Something I Have noticed in my time playing against Storm and many other powerhouse Hisako players is how invaluable the Shadow Rekka is for Hisako in this MU.
I recently played a set with Storm and noticed that I lost (mainly) to the reset game and breaker game. He had a TON of issues getting in, but when he did, he would easily land a 50% combo. He even said my neutral game was ■■■■ good but when he finally got through my defense and zoning I would take a hard hit; which felt great to hear considering that I pride myself upon my zoning and neutral game. Anyways..
The Sahdow Rekka seems to be the main tool of closing the gap for Hisako.
Any time I jumped from less than (basically full screen), tried to dash check, set up sand from mid screen, etc., the list goes on fow what he was able to punish with Shadow Rekka. My question is, what do you guys do to avoid being punsihed for Shadow Rekka. Placing bugs isn’t a very good Idea from my experience. Jumping can be devestating if he catches you pretty high in the air. I try to fake things out such as c.LP to make him think I was doing a move that was punishable but he never fell for it, EVER.
Another MU issue I want to discuss is Cinder.
When a Cinder lights my arms on Fire. What the ■■■■ am I supposed to do? ![]()
I’m at a bit of a loss for this one considering that when I fight a really good Cinder I find myself using my punches all the time to keep him from using his mobility and to punish him on wiffs with Whirl (which i seem to be getting really good at, I think I will be talking about how to punish with whirl and how to use it properly after I take some time to talk with other Kan-Ra’s this week)
Vs Hisako
I play a lot vs @TDBKi4Life in ranked and I got the same exact issue with his Hisako. You can have a great first round against the ghost girl, giving her a tough time to get in and keeping her in check. But once she gets a bar it gets really bad. At this point it doesn’t even matter whether she hits you with it, because she can instinct cancel it and than you are in BIG trouble.
IMO the best way to deal with it is a having a trap laying on the other side of the screen and just sandsplosion as soon as she does that move. This move takes forever so you should be fine even if your sandsplosion wiffs (I have to test this). When she has an instinct cancel ready, you do not wanna block this move.
vs Cinder
Easy solution, don’t get hit ![]()
Yes, this match up is one of those where swarms are completely useless. At least for me it seems that there is no pattern that works. Cinder just ignores them. There only use is to counter his projectile.
Getting your arms burned is also a situation where you should thing ahead and put a trap on the other side of the screen. As soon as you have them on fire and cinder approaches, explode in his face and teleport to the other side of the screen. Put another trap on the screen with spike ASAP and defend vs fireball with swarms until the burning is over.
PS: I always love to talk about everything Kan-Ra and KI related so go ahead!
Also, I’d like to see you play.
EDIT:
SHADOW SPIKE
SHADOW SPIKE
SHADOW SPIKE
You need to master that move to make Ra viable. It’s helpful in every match up. It’s a great assist
how do you deal with people who constantly jump? with characters like jago it’s hard to predict some players movements. Sometimes they’ll do jumping mediums and lights to get air bugs out of the way and when close they’ll wind kick to close distance to put on the pressure and change it up with full screen wind kicks if you try to Cr.MP them from a distance to tag them but whiffs under the wind kick. I’ve also tried cr.HP but they’ll just try to close the distance back up with more wind kicks into cr.MK or endokukens.
If they jump attack your swarms to get close you simply hit them with cr.MP for a full combo when they land.
If they empty jump just do St.HP xx hard spike to push them away. Than zone with stinger. Be careful when they have meter.
If they are getting close by jumping you can do St.MP xx whirl to AA.
If they jump into you, use down+back HP.
If they do wind kick just block and punish with LK xx whirl
well guys, to my utter disappointment they are introducing what seems to be another zone character; Eagle (Thunders brother). Any Ideas or comments on how we might have to handle his bullsh*t and his crappy self?
