I always thought maybe a few tiers should be added to the Killer rank like @ALEX07PR said to alleviate any mis-matches. I’ve vsed some killers that clearly just got there and only know the basics and unless I take it easy on them, the skill gap is way too big. It’s still good imo for it to be on the easier side to get into killer because it adds FT2 and imo is how ranked in any fighter should be. It’s the worst taking someone lightly and not being able to redeem yourself.
I’ve always been wary of ranking systems because there’s quite simply no way to make them perfect. Sure, you can come close, but there will always be someone who will abuse the system. I can’t even begin to tell you how many players I’ve run into that are at the bottom of the rung, but can still give me a decent thrashing - either by using a new/different account, being reset, or simply never playing ranked, etc. There are ways around the system which is why I never put much stock into it in the 1st place (and this is true for just about any game).
That being said, that doesn’t mean you can’t use it as a kind of pseudo-guideline for those who don’t abuse the system (which is most people) or particularly for yourself. It’s the latter that I take stock in. I know that I don’t abuse the system, so I know that I can applaud myself for reaching certain milestones, such as with the killer rank in KI. Oh, and believe me, I was ecstatic when I got there, especially after the nightmare that was the S1 ranking system, where I had to consistently fight players that were 10+ ranks higher than me every time I had an opportunity to rank up and even when I was about to rank down, making it a “set you up to fail” kind of system, which I didn’t like in the least bit.
So, while I know the system can certainly stand to be improved, I’m not the 1 to tell you how it should be done, as I wouldn’t know. I’ll leave that solution up to the experts.
As for how I feel about killer rank itself? It’s nice, sure, but once you realize just how varied killer rank really is, it definitely feels like you’ve only scratched the surface of the game. To me, reaching killer is simply the milestone that says you know enough about the basic game mechanics to succeed rather well overall, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re the bees knees. I save that mentality for the pros and top 32 players. Am I close though? I, for 1, certainly like to think so. Maybe someday…
…and soon too, I hope. I don’t know if I’ll ever actually reach top 32, because I hardly ever touch ranked leagues anymore. I find it a bit too serious and I like doing long sets and making new friends, both of which are things you can’t do in ranked leagues. I did participate in ranked for a whole month though, and managed to place in the #95 spot overall, and I’m happy enough with that, I think.
As far as tournaments go, I’ve only ever been in 1 - a local tournament in Orlando at MegaCon, where I placed 4th out of 30+ participants. I likely would’ve made top 3, but my final opponent, who was a no-show, decided to actually show up at the last possible second (sigh). Still, it was fun, and I’d like to participate in more tournaments if time, travel, and finances permit. It looks like I might actually get another stab at it, and soon too, since I was asked if I’d be attending a tournament (interestingly enough) in Orlando come June where some of the devs will actually be in attendance - I think I will be too. Whether I will get far or not is yet to be seen (I certainly hope so), but regardless of the outcome, I think it would be nice to meet some of the fine people this community has to offer in person, win or lose. And if I happen to win? Well then, that’ll just be icing on the cake (even if those are long odds). For those of you that are going, I’ll see you there. ![]()
May the Geek be with you.
Sounds like Jebailey’s CEO Tournament! Interesting!
This is actually what pushed me to hit Killer just a month or 2 ago. I kept running into people on the forums throughout S2 either hearing about how they all made Killer status or seeing their card in game for myself. Every time I heard people talking about how “easy” it is to get to Killer I couldn’t help but feel monstrously inadequate, and it really bummed me out. Sure, that was probably because I never played online apart from a few rare occasions, but I was only hampered further by doubt.
But then after I played with some folks, I got little confidence boosts. Some of them were random sets, a lot of them resulted from Forum Battles. @TheNinjaOstrich stands out in my head as being the first person to tell me something along the lines of “You don’t fight like a Silver. I’ll bet you could reach Killer if you really put your mind to it.” After playing and losing a few forum battles.
So I tried to make my way higher in little bursts. I sat in Bronze for months, I was in solve for the better part of a year. I only got Gold a few months back. I actually pushed to Killer just before KI World Cup, if I remember right, and a day after @MandrillManiac hit it as well.
When I finally hit Killer, not a day later I finally beat Boss Shago. I felt like was finally goodat the game, even if I’d had Lvl50 across the cast for a long time. It was like I was finally good enough to look like I’ve put the 800 hours (now nearly 900) I’d put into this game.
Before I waffle on too much further I should probably get to a point…
TL;DR- There’s plenty of worth to Killer, even to those who feel they don’t belong there. I still don’t feel like I’m all that great, but knowing that you made it this far, or that you’re trying to hit that mark, proves you’re worth in my book. The heart, the mindset, the fighting spirit…
…that killer instinct. ![]()
Wait… you hit 95th in Killer, and I beat you in a 2 of 3? ■■■■. That really makes me want to push past where I’m at now (about 800).
That whole post made me feel all warm & fuzzy inside…
Well I’m never going to get there so to me the only worth is
“ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED”
There desperately needs to be a ranking system inside of Killer. You get there… and well… that’s it. Most of us aren’t good enough for that top 32… but aren’t bad enough to not be killer. So we’re just kinda… at a standstill with no motivation.
There’s should be a Platinum and Diamond Rank before Killer.
I made this post about ranked a while back in another thread.
Ranked certainly needs some changes in my eyes, for a few reasons.
I haven’t played ranked in over 3 months now, I simply have no reason too. I made killer in about 3 days and then I was like…Well what do I do now??? I can never play enough or win enough to make top 32, so there is no motivation to play ranked.
I like the idea of top 32 but there are very few people that can play enough and even fewer that can win enough to reach that goal.
The main problem for me is that while the old system wasn’t perfect and was unforgiving it did do some things well, which made me want to learn more and keep coming back. which this system doesn’t at all.
In the old system I would go away and learn something new, implement it in to my game and climb a few ranks. This was an amazing feeling which made me want to learn more and keep coming back. In this current system that just isn’t the case once you reach killer. Which is a motivation problem for me, and i’m sure many others.
In this current system I just don’t know the standard of people, I fight a friend who’s only gold and have far better fights than many killers. In the old system if I came up against a lvl30 I knew I would prob lose, if I came up against a 15 I knew I would prob win. This again has gone in the current system.
Your rank used to show an estimate of your standard (well to me anyway) which was why you were always trying improve it, out of a sense of pride and achievement. Again once you reach killer in the current sytem that has gone.
I think there needs to be far more tiers added to the current system and relegations reintroduced even if it is very hard to relegated.
My ideal would be similar to Smite:
Bronze
1
2
3
4
5
Silver
1-5
Gold
1-5
Platinum
1-5
Killer
1-5
Then Ultimate
For the top of top and a goal for everyone to reach for even if unobtainable.
Simply put…The motivation to learn and improve needs to be put back into ranked.
Sorry for the length of this post.
These are just my opinions and other people may have different opinions which is all good.
P.S. the matchmaking doesn’t really bother me, you can match me up with anyone just give me matches and the motivation. ![]()
This looks eerily similar to LoL. Not that I’m complaining. In fact, that’s the only thing I really like about LoL anymore.
Yeah, well it was from Smite for me ![]()
Lol I play Smite a lot, so I know exactly what you guys are talking about! ![]()
