Did Street Fighter V deserve their Best Fighting Game of 2016 award?

My simple answer is nope. Sounds like the judges didn’t want to actually look into all the games.

@lago407 personally I liked the seasonal model of release with KI though I can understand it to had its flaws. Personally I think the judges simply picked SF5 out famous recognition.

Pokken is great and it was a fun fighting game, though it did have quite a fun cast, If it didn’t win, it’s only cause the people who made it didn’t seem confident enough to keep it going.

Also It’s kinda hard to get my bro to play it with me because he wants Blastoise in it. But I don’t see it happening.

I hope @IronGalaxy isn’t disheartened by what happend. I don’t think they’d be easily distraught though.

this on so many levels. @Infilament again speaks what is on my mind in an articulate fashion and puts it words. good post sir.

all this does is let them know they can keep ■■■■■■■ up and they’ll get praise for it and our $60. next SF iteration that releases, i am staying away from

Oh no! I want to be 110% clear on this… I LOVE the seasonal model. I didn’t like it at first because I wanted the full game all at once, but three years in, I’m more than convinced of its brilliance. I think that one of the main reasons why I’m still playing and enjoying this game three years in is the constant content delivery. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I just meant that if someone is looking at a full game versus a season of a game, they might be more inclined to pick the full game simply due to (perceived) content, which would be all the more ironic given the complete lack of content in SFV at launch and even up to this point.

I also hope the devs aren’t discouraged at all by this. I hope they realize that this was almost assuredly political and in no way, shape or form indicates anything negative about KI or any other candidates for that matter. Street Fighter won by being Street Fighter, not by being good. While SF5 looks more like SF 4.5, KI is bringing new and unique character designs out and new modes that Capcom couldn’t even conceive of and while recognition for their hard work would’ve been awesome, I’ll take an amazing game over what Capcom fans have any day of the week.

I don’t know if it’s the Capcom fanboy snobbery that’s plagued the FGC since the days of Street Fighter 2 vs Mortal Kombat, or if it’s the tourney exposure, or the slight tendency away from American made fighting games by the FGC or what, but it still feels wrong to me.

SFV is the franchise’s weak link game. Its Tekken 4, Virtua Fighter 3, Mortal Kombat 4, Soul Calibur 5, etc. That game that either tries a few things that don’t quite work, or perhaps coasts a little too hard on its previously established gameplay or reputation. Even if it sells well, it tends not to be on the strength of what it offers. Of course, SFV sold terribly, but I don’t think that overly matters.

The fact that a weak link Street Fighter still beat out the games in that category, as weak as that game is, and that still boggles my mind.

nope. They just dont wanted to give it to KI simply because of the AAA thing. Thats why i’ve said
#NO SEASON 4

That doesn’t make any sense.

Man, if the eventual release of MVC4 is a reality and comes out half-baked and barren like Launch SFV, I’m going to be furious at Capcom to say the least.

yeah KI can compete with AAA games as well as a budget project. What really doesnt make sense is a sh**ty game like SF5 win best game award.
Nobody will take KI seriously if this thing of seasons keep going.

Eh. I can argue this but… I’m kinda tired.

But SFV is doing the same seasonal thing KI is doing y’know.

Edit: It did get season 2 apparently… If I recall.

yeah me too. Anyway, who cares? I love KI franchise nothing will change my mind about it.

so its just unfair have SF5 winning these kind of awards but anyway. KI still a great fighting game.

Read somewhere that Capcom intends to support the game through 2020. So could be looking at more seasons that some shows on TV get…

Really? That… Doesn’t seem smart IMO.

Kinda seems like they’re in a no win situation.

If they pull out now, I can’t imagine anyone that paid $60 will feel like they got their money’s worth, which could mean some major acrimony between Capcom and the FGC, and that could have ramifications on both for years to come. What if Capcom decided to release a game this way again. Would anyone honestly trust them enough to buy in early? Or perhaps worse, what if they decide to shelve the whole genre since there doesn’t seem to be enough money in it for them anymore?

The alternative, however, is to keep funneling both their money and Sony’s money in to free content support for a game that sold horribly versus projected sales figures in the hopes that they’ll be able to what, nickel and dime the small number of people that did buy SFV? Maybe lure in some more people that were initially scared off by the bad press or those that decided to wait until it’s more stable or has more content? I tend to doubt that the sales were so low because Sagat wasn’t in the game yet.

Still, it sucks that they want to support a game that’s not doing well for three more years while a game like Darkstalkers didn’t even get a chance, but that’s just the way it is, I guess.

Street Fighter V is the most well-known Fighter released this year and it has the biggest focus in the FGC currently (and probably will remain so for years to come), and that’s why it won. Objective merit is incidental to the decisions behind The Game Awards.

I thought Dark Souls 3 should have won Best RPG, although I’m one of those weirdos who didn’t think The Witcher 3 was very good beyond its very impressive overall presentation and side-quests. That said, I didn’t play Blood and Wine.

Don’t agree with Overwatch getting GOTY. It’s really fun but I also think that game still has a ways to go.

I dunno, they could turn SFV around depending on how they handle their seasons.

Yeah… I’m just short sighted lol

I said it in the other thread but I’ll say it here too: any of the other nominees would have been a better winner than SFV. And it was a crime for GG Revelator to not even get nominated.

But that award show was a cringe fest. I bailed at as soon I saw freaking Hydroman.

How cringe? I didn’t watch award show.

About as cringe as your average award show. What made me a bit upset was that they didn’t have enough time to present all of the awards on the show yet they had plenty of time for very awkward musical performances from some nobodies and had plenty of time to just sit around and bull ■■■■ about nothing important.

The only tolerable thing was we got to see a bit more of Kojima’s new game Death Stranding.
